Sling TV: 7 Things to Know Before You Subscribe

Published

on

“Is Sling TV good enough to cut the cord and cancel cable?” That’s a pretty common question from users who are interested in paying less for Live TV and still getting live sports and many of their favorite channels.

Sling TV is a live TV streaming service that even includes ESPN, and it is affordable compared to cable — even if you need to add more channels to get the plan you want. Before you subscribe, make sure you check out DirecTV Now.

Before you subscribe to Sling TV there are a few things you should know about the service. These are the most common questions we get from potential Sling TV subscribers and from new users.

How Much Does Sling TV Cost

What you need to know before you subscribe to Sling TV.

What you need to know before you subscribe to Sling TV.

Sling TV starts at $30 a month. You don’t need to have a specific carrier or cable company for this price and you can choose to add other premium channels and sports packages based on what you want.

You can choose the Sling Blue plan for $30 or the Sling Orange + Blue for $40 a month.

HBO live and on-demand is another $15 a month, which includes a large catalog of previously viewed shows. Subscribers can also choose to add these packages

  • Sling TV Sports Extra – $5 / Month
  • Best of Spanish TV Extra – $5 / Month
  • Kids Extra- $5 / Month
  • Hollywood Extra – $5 / Month
  • Broadcast Extra – $5 / Month
  • Comedy Extra $5 / Month
  • News Extra – $5 / Month
  • Lifestyle Plus Extra – $5 / Month

Depending on the plan you choose, you may need to pay $10 a month instead of $5 a month. This changes often, so compare the pricing on Sling before switching.

You need a base $20 plan to add any of these services, but you can add in a lot of channels with the plans without paying for a significant number of channels you don’t want. Sling TV offers many other plans and options that you can add to a base plan including other languages as well as Cinemax and Starz. There is no contract and you can cancel Sling TV online.

Sling TV Channels and Shows

Sling TV includes Live TV and some channels include a three-day replay that lets you watch a show that recently aired, but you cannot fast forward during those.

Sling TV offers a Cloud DVR that allows you to record 50 hours of Cloud DVR content for $5 a month if you watch on Amazon Fire TVs, TV sticks and Fire tablets.

The base $20 a month Sling TV plan includes ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN 3, AMC, BBC America, Food Network, A&E, History, TNT, Comedy Central, Freeform, Epix Drive In, Tribecca Shortlist, Viceland, AXS TV, Newsy, Cheddar,  HGTV, IFC, The Disney Channel, Polaris+, Maker, TBS, Travel Channel, Adult Swim, CNN, Bloomberg Television, Local Now, Flama Cartoon Network, ABC Family, Lifetime, ACC Network Extra and Galavision.

We continue to see new Sling TV channels come to the service, so the best place to look for what you currently get is on the Sling TV packages page.

You can watch some live local channels on Sling, but it varies from location to location. You need to enter your zip code and see what you get.

Free Sling TV Trial

Anyone can try Sling TV free for three days. This is long enough to check out the service and see how well it performs on your devices and network. This will also allow you to see if you have enough channels and shows to justify the cost and to cut the cord with cable.

Only One Device at a Time Unless You Upgrade

The biggest catch to using Sling TV to replace a regular cable subscription is that you can only watch on one device at a time on Sling Orange.

If you upgrade to Sling Blue, you can watch up to three streams of these channels at the same time. This makes Sling TV a much better deal for families.

Sling TV Deals

Sling TV is $30 a month to start, but you can score deals on the device you use to play Sling TV on your HDTV when you pre-pay for Sling TV.

If you are just getting started with streaming to your TV, these deals are helpful as you will save on a device that works with Sling TV and with other services like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and more.

Read Sling TV Reviews

Before you invest in a new device to watch Sling TV, you should read about the service to see if it fits your needs.

“Sling TV has a great foundation, room to grow and improve, and is the first step to taking control back of TV and loosening the grip cable providers have over everyone. If they can continue to improve the little things, add more content, and allow multiple devices to stream at once, there’s no stopping Sling TV. It is a must try, especially for only $20 a month.”

Read our full Sling TV review to find out if this service is worth $20 a month.

If Sling TV were not plagued with problems it would be a great deal. The service does not work properly most of the time. A couple of months ago it was common for programming drop out completely. They seem to have fixed that, but now they have audio issues where most of the channels are broadcasting the wrong audio track. I have opened at least 4 tickets on the problem and they have even acknowledged the issue on Facebook. After almost a week, the problem remains. I have canceled this service and will wait for a more reliable product from another company.

I have enjoyed the service of Sling Tv now since the service became available to the public & I’ve yet to encounter any problems streaming the service on my Roku 3. I realize that live streaming is a brave new world as opposed to the streaming of archived content only via services like Netflix, etc….but I believe the live streaming will only get better for those using it via other streaming/ gaming boxes. I know I’m still amazed at how fast the stream comes on in forcus whenever I use it( if I had a cable box, I would have liked to turn it on with Sling Tv- as I think this internet stream comes on faster). I am enjoying getting the channels that I want- Espn, the HBO channel along with the basic package- and saving $$ to booth.

I have had Sling TV for about two months now and I love it…We have not had any of the problems talked about above. I love that on the HGTV channel you can go back and watch shows from the previous 3 days. We just recently cut the cord thanks to SLING TV.

I wasn’t all too sure about sling TV at first. Will I get good reception? Will I get all the channels I want at an affordable price? Do I really want to cut ties with my cable company?I answered yes to all of these questions after starting my free, no strings ateaches 7 day trial, which can be canceled at any time via their website or the 1800 number. And to top they have friendly customer service agents waiting to set you up now. So what are you waiting for?

but how do I get abc, nbc etc? the hi tech bunny ears thing I bought for $60 at Best Buy pretty much only pulls in ION-tv and a bunch of Spanish-language stations.

Move your rabbit ears to another location in the room, preferably in a window. I have one I paid 15 dollars for at big lots, live way out from town in a rural area and get about 22 channels including PBS NBC,CBS, RDC, 3 independent channels , Fox, and many others. Unfortunately I can’t get ABC but I can live with that.I’m very happy with it. Good Luck!

Pj: US TV Now deal and that would fix your problem. (US TV Now utilizes a central PA local cable company to pull in local channel.) This is actually a great deal for NFL games where you can watch all that are on… usually only one per scheduled set of games with normal csble/satellite.

Sounds OK. IF SLING Tv adds some more sports channels (NBCSports, Fox Sports 1 & 2, etc.) to the base package, then I would subscribe IMMEDIATELY.

I have looked at roof top TV antennas and will likely go that direction with a booster for al local channels. If a rooter is added, I think I will get other market channels out of my area. My city does not require a permit for a roof top and then new ones are much smaller than the old one from 40 years ago. Worst is, I can get the lowest cost satellite service they offer for just local stations. I am about to cut the cord and get a second Roku

    • orator1

      03/01/2017 at 5:01 pm

I have an outdoor antenna with a booster on it. I get 36 channels off the air, all for free, and many of them are out of market. By the way, a few years ago, the Federal Communications Commission ruled that you do not need a permit or permission to place an antenna on your home — just thought you’d like to know that.

Can you add additional Roku’s to separate TV’s in order to watch TV on different televisions? I have 3 TV’s and my kids will use the other 2 to watch cartoons etc while I watch what I want in another room. Can this be done?

    • Thatguy

      09/17/2015 at 12:49 pm

No you can not. Sling TV only allows viewing on one device at a time.

      03/10/2016 at 11:35 pm

Im a new customer and I have set up one tv. I was told by cuter service that the only way to have on multiple tvs and devices is to have separate accts. For instance I have an acct for my mother in MD and an acct for my residence both in my name but two diff WiFi connections. So that works. Now in my home I have the main tv n two other rooms. All roku devices. So far I only have sling on one tv but since I have my WiFi connection and a hotpot connection. I’m going to attempt to run the second service through that 2nd WiFi. I don’t know if you have 2 connections but it is possible. I’m putting effort into it because either way I’m saving money on TV that really shouldn’t consume or lives at $200.00 a month!! $60 a month vs. $$200.00?? I’ll take $60. Oh n with my $12.00 Netflix for 4 tvs or devices it’s still cheaper than cable! I’ll take it. Especially if you watch the same certain channels. Good luck!

      • Sarah is a liar

        04/06/2016 at 4:44 pm

You can have multiple TV’s by buying an additional TV. Now if you would like the service on all of them then you are correct. You need to be more specific with what you say or else you become a liar. Like 3/6/2016 when you stated you cant have multiple TV’s or devices, when you really can. They just need their own accounts to stream at the same time. Regards and good luck you liar

I have been using Sling TV for about 4 months now, mostly on a couple of Roku streaming sticks, and one older model Roku. I cut the cable cord about 6 years ago, so this has been a nice addition. Mostly, my wife watches programs on Food and HGTV, and Sling seems just about perfect for that. Those 2 channels have the ability to search backward to find shows that have already aired, maybe up to a week or so. It would be nice if all of the channels included were capable of that, especially one like AMC. It seems like everything I want to watch on AMC airs on Sunday nights, and that night is virtually impossible for me to sit and watch TV. I’m not sure what other channels are capable of this style of “On Demand” service, I just know that AMC and Disney are not capable of it.
The few times I have watched ESPN, the quality has been a mixed bag. Sometimes it is crystal clear, other times it gets real pixelated and lo-res. I suppose it could be my internet provider, but none of the other channels seem to have lessened quality at the same time as ESPN is going through it’s difficulties. It doesn’t matter to me that much as I tend to use the Watch ESPN app anyways. The only other thing I find a little on the disappointing side is the choppy-ness/laggy-ness or the unresponsiveness of the app when pushing buttons on the remote control. It feels like it should run much smoother than it does, but maybe that is the price of streaming live TV.

I recently cut the cable cord (pause for applause)…I have 3 televisions in my home. I went with an HD Antenna for my local channels and I have two Roku 3’s and one Fire TV box. I have tested USTVnow and Sling TV for live streaming channels. Here are a few key points that stuck out for me.

    USTVnow:
    . Good reliable streaming service.
. Support for… Android, PC, Roku, (Fire TV w/Plex Server)
. $29 per month for Base Package…see website for channel line up.
. Support for 3 simultaneous device users or 1 PC user.

    Sling TV:
    . Good reliable streaming service.
. Support for just about any device.
. $20 per month for Base Package…see website for channel line up.
    . Add-on packages available…most are $5
. Supports 1 user at a time…this may ultimately be the deal breaker for me.

I suggest you that you invest the time to try each streaming service so that you can find the best fit for you and your family’s needs.

    Stream on!

    10/25/2015 at 8:43 am

I keep getting a 8-270 error and the stream fails after 1 min of streaming. I can stream on my PC but not my TV. my speed is 75/75 and direct connect so I know it’s not the speed. I see many people have this 8-270 error and so far Sling can’t fix my problem.

ESPN is a 50/50 whether it will load and continue to run. Other channels much better, though noticed CNN becomes a problem during presidential debates. I wonder if the problem is when too many users are wanting to watch same channel, then they can’t keep up – like a bandwidth issue from the sender side??

  17. MMadden

    11/09/2015 at 11:15 am

I use Sling TV to watch football since we can’t afford cable. The service is a good idea, but when I use it on my MBP, the fans start running within about 30 seconds and continue to run until I close the app. I’ve had the computer almost two years and no amount of Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, etc. has ever triggered the fan. My battery also drains completely within an hour or so, though it typically lasts all day otherwise. The app is pretty buggy and, given the amount of video lag or drop in quality much of the time, I don’t plan to continue my subscription after football season.

I acquired Sling TV in October to watch the baseball playoffs. For the most part it seems to work properly and I have taken into consideration that this is streaming TV and will look different. I did experience several drops and pixelated pictures during the games which at first I thought was my internet provider but later found out that others were having the same issues. I’m going to give this a little more time with college basketball now starting up and hope (hoop) for the best. I was a faithful cable subscriber for over 31 years before I cut the cord and went to this. Please continue to add more sports and improve on drops and pixelated picture problems and I’ll keep the service.

I have not even had sling TV for a month and I will be canceling asap! Don’t waste your money people, I wouldn’t even watch it if it was free! Every Sunday when I try to watch TWD and it freezes, skips, or lags terribly. Can’t believe how much they charge for this garbage! Netflix and Hulu are soooooo much better and the2 of them combined are cheaper than this junk! Trust me, don’t bother!

  21. Murphy

    12/01/2015 at 6:41 pm

Brand new to this, and already wish I could cancel before a month is up. Is my older Roku an issue? I have a 2014 UHD Samsung Smart TV, and I’m watching this crap app?

  22. Al in SoCal

    12/03/2015 at 9:34 am

It would be $15 or less a month without ESPN – I don’t like sports, I don’t need sports and ESPN adds 5 or more dollars to each subscription. Shame for a service trying to break this the mold actually keep it going.

Why should I have to watch TV when the networks decide to air it. Without DVR and with only limited on demand it’s not worth the money.

    • Sarah is a liar

      04/06/2016 at 4:55 pm

Bitch you are you not paying for a DVR service, DVR is separate from cable. That is why cable providers charge extra for it. Knowledge is power. Better learn you some

  24. Pray Daily

    12/25/2015 at 3:55 pm

We have ROKU2 … the signal drops often.
During the free trial the shows would ask ‘to watch’ instead ‘resume’ to where the signal was lost.
SOOO frustrating! Then the fast forward barely works — took 30 mins to get to the halfway of the movie’s previous location. Or I guess I could’ve watched everything all over again.
We will not be keeping this subscription.

  25. Ed Midwest

    12/25/2015 at 5:49 pm

i have to agree with Al’s comment on ESPN. I am considering whether to keep my Sling subscription, and a lower cost without ESPN (which I do not watch) or additional channels in place of ESPN would go a long way to keeping me as a customer.

  26. Gail Gary

    12/26/2015 at 11:03 am

Not a reliable product, even at this date. Cableless by choice for the last eight months, I wanted a major news channel again. Sling looked very promising. However, I just canceled it after keeping it for five weeks. The reasons: 1) The audio gets out of sync constantly, and you have to exit and restart the software to fix this. Often, if it’s a busy time of day, you can’t pick up CNN again, you have to wait an hour or two. 2) Seriously, CNN is not available much of the time—which has to do with my cable provider and maxed-out nodes in my building, which cannot be fixed (no competitors in the area, and I have no choice but to put up with inadequate cable). Even though I have a supposedly very fast connection, it doesn’t matter; streaming is a nightmare much of the time. I can only reach CNN, the reason I wanted Sling in the first place, about half the time, and if everyone is home from work, forget about getting the news for at least a couple of hours. 3) I can usually pick up the other channels offered, but I really don’t care about them, I just want CNN. A lot of people like ESPN, ESPN2, AMC, TNT, H, H2, TBS, IFC, Travel Channel, HGTV, ABC Family, Disney Channel, Bloomberg, Cartoon Network, etc., but I never watched that stuff when I had regular cable. It was literally worthless content to me. I just want a major news channel, and Sling can’t even deliver CNN consistently for me. So it was a waste of time and $$.

  27. Gail Gary

    12/26/2015 at 11:10 am

Just to clarify above, I don’t have cable TV right now, just Internet and digital phone. When I said the nodes were maxed out, I am specifically referring to the Internet service. However, when I had cable, it was crappy then too, and often unreilable. The underlying equipment support for the technology in my neighborhood is old, overloaded, and neglected.

We really, REALLY wanted Sling to work for us, but sadly—NOPE! We’ve been cable-less for about 25 yrs. now, we got mad & cancelled it once the cable co. started forcibly charging $5 per month for remote rental when we had a universal remote that worked fine. Have a Roku that we use quite often (Netflix/Pandora/PBS channel, etc), but there’s really no sports programming & now that most sports have gone to cable this is causing my husband major distress. When we found out that the all of the college bowl games were going to be on ESPN, I remembered seeing an ad for Sling online that stated ESPN was one of the channels it offered. We called the 800# & spoke with a very nice girl that quickly got us signed up for a 14-day free trial. We received our welcome email & got our password and then added/activated the channel though the Roku channel store. All of this went very well, then the problems began. Never could get Sling to play. It just sat there with the little spinning disk on every channel & never even managed to load. For some reason, on Slings settings page, it insists that we have 0 mpbs as our speed. We tried some troubleshooting steps suggested by the technician (cycle computer modem/do a manual update for Roku/ delete channel & re-ad/ make sure screensaver is disabled in Roku/change quality on Sling to low quality & slower speed, etc.)but still nothing. Were told that a ticket would be put in & they would be investigating this for us. Also told us that we could watch ESPN through WatchESPN channel with Sling password. Thought this would work, but nope–ESPN just constantly buffers and reloads about every 20-30 seconds so watching a game this way would be futile. After 3 more calls to tech support & trying various suggestions and also going online to try to troubleshoot this issue ourselves, we have given up. My husband ended up going over to my sister & brother-in-laws to watch the game on New Years Eve & will have to find somewhere to watch the other games this weekend. Seems to me that since other formats (Netflix, etc) work correctly without problems on our Roku it is the type of signal being sent from Sling (& from ESPN as well) that is the issue here, not anything we’re doing. Seems like many others are experiencing these same issues also, & hope that at some point in the future Sling will get this fixed. For now, we’ve spent 3 full days troubleshooting & we’re fed up at this point. Will be calling to cancel our free trial today.

Is anyone able to watch ESPN on SlingTV over a 6Mbps (or slower) DSL line?

  32. Tim

    01/17/2016 at 11:06 am

I have 6 Mbps or slower dsl and up until a couple days ago I’ve been able to watch ESPN as well as all the other channels Sling offers. Last couple of days though, lots of interruptions and then the app logo just hangs, nothing happens. Really frustrating and I’m going to cancel the service. It’s not worth it if it’s not reliable .. too much time troubleshooting, to no avail.

Ive had sling for about 3 months now and I am totally sick of it….always freezes up….drops signal or completely resets..and I have a steady 10 to 40 mbs…..contacted customer service….twice…located in India or somewhere….they lie and say they weren’t aware of ANY problems with the service anywhere then they say someone will contact me….haven’t heard from anyone yet….overall…I would give it 1 out of 10 just because I can watch it sometime.

I have Mixed Views on Sling TV.. we signed up for a 7 day free trial prior to the College Football playoffs. We have been ‘cord cutters’ for a couple for a couple of years and use Roku Streaming Sticks. When we realized ESPN was airing the GAMES, we decided to give this ‘APP’ a try. I have had issues with it asking ‘Are you still Watching’ after 3 hours of no remote activity. We may be watching a Marathon of American Pickers, or in the case of Football, has been on the same channel for 3+ hours. I did an online chat with Sling support, and did what they said, but we still have the issue. It also wants to ‘cut out’ at the very end of a show on History, or HGTV,especially at night ( btw removing the screen saver has no effect on these issues). This is Live Streaming, and we miss the end of the show… On the positve side, our 8 Bay Antenna gives us the 3 of 5 Main networks, and Hulu fills in the gap for the ones we can’t pick up. We have used Hulu & Acorn with little to no problems. SlingTV is a good affordable app as a ‘Cable’ alternative, but they do need to get the bugs out. It’s not my high speed internet (60mbps), or my two Roku Sticks… it’s the SLING TV App and they need to own up to these issues if they want to keep customers.

My first time watching ESPN on sling is it promising. Picture very wavy especially on sports which is why I’m trying it. Netflix works wonderfully. Can’t understand why
Sling is so bad. Will probably cancel after free trial. Hope they do better as I love their channels

I have canceled my Sling TV. Since purchasing a Roku 4 back in October I have has nothing but issues. The known issues with the Sling TV App and the R4 still remain today despite numerous promises that it was fixed. Trying to get some credit or discount for all the service issues won’t happen at all. Profits over people. I would suggest anyone looking to subscribe go the the Roku and Sling TV forums and read the posts. Also, you may want to check with the BBB before you click the subscribe button. I really do want my Sling TV but cannot pay for a broken product.

I will just chime in with the rest: it doesn’t work. I have it on a Roku 2 and it just shows a black screen when trying to watch live sports like ESPN. I even downloaded the WatchEspn app and put in my friend’s account to see if it would work and it does. That suggests one thing: this service isn’t fully baked. i wish I was… :)

Can Slow big tv be used on Apple TV? I tried to use it on my iPhone but that wouldn’t work. It kept telling me to go to my Wifi settings and select Slingbox. Only proble is it never shows Sling in the available wifi selections.
When we search for Slingbox on our new Apple TV it isn’t to be found nor is there an icon preloaded!
We cut the cord great, now we have no sports. I just read all the reviews and about what 70% are bad?
This sling looked like a great idea. But now what? This sucks.

You’re saying Slingbox .. Sling TV is a different thing altogether. This is from help.sling.com:
When will Sling TV be on Apple TV?

We are always looking to add to Sling TV’s supported devices. Unfortunately, our service is not currently available on Apple TV. However, Sling TV customers can use their credentials to enjoy the ESPN networks they receive as part of their subscription through the WatchESPN app on Apple TV.

Check that you have enough bandwidth on wireless provider. They sometimes throttle it and that will slow down sling and cause interruptions. Don’t run it 24/7… or get more mbs wireless service.

On Monday of this week (February 15, 2016) Sling stopped showing past episodes of my favorite shows on the History Channel, HGTV, Food Channel and the Travel Channel. In the past I’ve been able to watch several past episodes of my favorites but now – nothing.

We have had problems with the connection from time to time, but for $20 a month I was willing to put up with it.

This seals the deal for me though and we will cancel. Too bad for Sling because we cut the cable and were recommending it to everyone.

can anyone answer this question?? you need internet to play sling tv so how do buy internet cheaply? comcast charges 90$ just for internet so 90 plus sling’s 20$ gets me right back to the normal charge of buying the channels from comcast in the first place. Sling advertises thats is so cheap but how to you get the internet cheap too? unless im missing something

      06/10/2016 at 7:28 am

I don’t know where you live, but I was able to bypass the Comcast monopoly with Sonic Internet, available in the Bay Area. Comcast tried the same gouging tactic with me, which made it all the more gratifying to drop Comcast service.

Later in the year, Comcast came out with skinny bundles, but it was too late for me. I was gone.

Ask around. There may be an alternative you’re unaware of. I found out about Sonic from a coworker.

I have AT&T, 24Mbps at $67 a month. I work online and what I make pays for the internet. I shop online, pay my bills online, do my banking online, have a magicJack for a backup phone and stream all my TV. Make the internet pay for itself as much as you can and spread the remaining cost to save money in more areas than just your cable bill.

Joe Doe, way up there, in 2015 comments about Sling. Well, frankly, it appears you hadn’t even word one, to in the saying and speaking as in particulars, relating to the subject matter at hand, I.e., Sling TV? Strangely enough, however (and truly, it really is. Just spend, to wasting a few neurons, in thoughtful contemplation, to your thinking that one over just but a bit, here!), it simply seems to appear you didn’t make a comment, nary even word one, regarding your own experiences with live streaming, Sling TV. I simply suppose, it just may or might be that you just sorta like to but instead, do a little ‘trolling’ so as in the criticizing of others. Correct? Or, no? A bit immaturely juvenile, ya’ think, hmm? But Sling is, indeed, a well worth the price for the content I receive. Recommend by Mr. Couldn’t help himself, but rather the delving off a bit, there, into my in the doings of some, but rather extra circular otherwise things for a minute.

      Hi, LLOYD,
DO YOU HAVE WIFI? If you don’t, Roku would be UTTERLY USELESS for you. It CANNOT WORK TO FUNCTIONING MINUS AND WITHOUT WIFI STREAMING VIDEO SERVICES. Sling is an absolute impossibly, yours to having and have, either. It is all broadband WIFI and Streaming Video/Streaming Apps. This, is precisely as is required, being as to their’s which is necessarily predicated upon, concomitantly. And simply, but as rather based upon, it’s to BEING of which Roku technology is based upon. These are the ‘Smart TV’s (Roku TV) which are as presently on the market: Apple TV is one, Insignia Roku TV, another. (This particular TV model, is the one of which I’d but rather just recently having had purchased, in April, 2016 @ Best Buy -A 33 inch, Insigna Roku TV for $129.00. And I added, to this cost for the TV, another $199.00 more, and purchasing the LG HDMI BLUETOOTH SOUND BAR w/WIRELESS SUBWOOFER-This entire system, including the great sound production quality from the LG Sound Bar System, came to a grand total cost, just under $350.00!) Other Roku TV’s, include: Hisense, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TCL, Toshiba and Vizo. You can use streaming players (NO Smart Roku TV Necessary. However, your present TV must be HD TV with HDMI Port). AND ANY OF ALL ROKU PLAYERS, Roku Streaming Stick, Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, Xbox One, Chromecast, Channel Master, ZTE, Android TV and Apple TV. AGAIN, SLING TV IS A ‘STREAMING VIDEO’ (APPS), VIDEO SERVICE. This, LIKENED WHICH ALSO YOU COULD USE, INCLUDING THESE DEVICES AS ARE EXACTLY AND PRECISELY BUT AS SAME VARIATIONS TO THE VERY SAME STREAMING MEDIA SYSTEMS, ALSO: STREAMING VIDEO (APP) SERVICE, SUCH AS ARE: NETFLIX, HULU, AMAZON INSTANT VIDEO, etc., etc… I hope this clears things up for you as to the requirements for inasmuch for having AND utilizing of ‘SLING TV (APP.) STREAMING VIDEO ARE NECESSARILY TO THE REQUIRED AND HAVING… Oh, obviously, and but rather as ALSO TO needed as well, is that you’ll need a Router, compatible to the WIFI System you are utilizing.

I just signed up and am plagued with problems. First the system will not allow me to look for any of the channels, and most of the “now playing” are junk shows. It isn’t allowing me to see any of the news channels, or amc for that matter. If it doesn’t sort itself out within the next day or so, I’m done.

  74. Brad

    11/30/2016 at 8:33 am

I found a flaw in the Sling TV software. Not only do they want your zip code for local channels, but it also requires a static IP address, which requires me to get a business account. So, for what I was paying for 200+ cable channels, I can pay the same for only 40 channels. Not a sound business decision and it appears Sling TV is not ready to go public with their product.

    12/30/2016 at 7:57 am

When I first tried Sling Tv, it was on my Windows PC. I would play a show for about 5 mins. maybe not even that long then the picture would freeze for a split second then the picture would go from HD, down to sd the audio would be way out of wack with the person speaking. so after putting up with that for a few days I gave up on the PC idea! So I switched to my Roku box, guess what, after a few mins. no split second freezing, but voice and lips matching, You Guessed It, Not so good! If Sling would fix their glitches, It would be almost great, Their packages leave something to be desired? Like their 25 dollar package is great, 20 is OK! but their 40 dollar one? come on, charging 15 dollars for just ESPN & Disney, You Need to throw some extra channels in on that deal! For 20 dollars You get ESPN, Disney and a ton of other channels! If you thrown in lets say the Comedy Plus Extra ,& Lifestyle Plus Extra then Maybe it would be worth $40, but from what I’ve seen in the last Year from Sling, It would be cheaper to just go another route!

I am not sure how I will receive service because right now we have Dish, but I have started to phase it out slowly and now have the cheapest basic service, and that’s $62.50 a month. It’s still expensive for the channels we have that we don’t care to watch. I will subscribe for the free seven days and decide if I want to keep it or not. I have a good antenna that brings in 30 channels in good days at least, so in reality I can get free service with that simple antenna. My sons want to watch AMC and that’s included in Sling TV.

    03/31/2017 at 7:05 am

Having used Sling for a little over a month I have to say that you get what you pay for. On the positive side I watch most of what I want for less than cable. Right now that outweighs the negatives:
-on demand content is so quirky and unreliable.
-most of my time in Sling is spent trying to find what I want to watch.
-Sling often doesn’t pickup where I left off when I stop watching on demand content mid way.
    -Menu/interface is awful.

Better than nothing. I would probably appreciate it more had I spent more time with nothing.

My experience with Sling has been absolute garbage. We had a issue with all of our streaming. After a cable company meeting and shimmy up the pole all is well. I am getting 160 meg download to the modem. This is more than enough. We use Netflix, Amazon and many other independent apps to watch programs. Then there is Sling. IF the show loads you will get buffering. Lately with 5 minutes left the whole show gets stuck and won’t continue. I have my Roku updated and hardwired to my modem. EVERY service I use works better than I could dream. I updated to a new modem (Surfboard 32X when I thought I was the internet issue) So I have done EVERYTHING I can do including rebooting the Roku before bed each night. Simply put Sling is a great idea that just does not deliver. $20 isn’t much I know. But it is a HUGE amount when you are getting nothing! I think people THINK they are getting a SLING BOX type product. What you are getting is a crappy DISH network product that for what ever reason refuses to admit they screwed the pootch!

Horrible choice if you’re even considering Sling tv. Terrible slow streaming that will tell you that you get the Stanley cup finals when it doesn’t which in my eyes that’s false advertisement. People that got it for basketball also got screwed over and quickly learned it is a WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!! Look at what the people say not articles from people that work for the company.
