SMS Donations for Haiti Earthquake Relief

Published

photo_haiti.jpgThe people of Haiti are going through some unimaginable pain and suffering. While many of us are stressing out over missing drivers and poor 3G service, Haitians are doing their best to just survive. If you don’t yet have a sense of the devastation, I suggest watching the AP report in the embedded YouTube player or viewing Boston.com’s ‘Big Picture gallery.

Aid organizations are mobilizing, but they need all the financial support they can get. The American Red Cross is one organization that is making it incredibly easy to pitch in. To donate $10 to the disaster relief, all you need to do is send a text message with the word “HAITI” to 90999. You may send multiple text messages if you’d like to donate more, or visit RedCross.org. There are other organizations that will make a comparable impact on Haiti, but I haven’t run across any others that make donating money so easy.
The American Red Cross has raised well over a million dollars through its SMS fundraising campaign today. If you’re able, I encourage you to pick up your phone and pitch it.

There is another organisation – Yele Haiti where you can send donations via text (text “YELE” to 501501, gives $5). This organisation is founded by the musician Wyclef Jean and can be found here: http://www.yele.org

Tamas, thank you for sharing. Long time Wyclef fan, but not familiar with his organization. Just SMS’d Yele to donate.
