Sony Ericsson Plans 9 Android Smartphones for North America This Year

According to a report from Android Community, Sony Ericsson is being aggressive with the North American market, a market that it and rival Scandinavian phone rival Nokia has had a hard time breaking into in the past, with up to 9 phone launches this year in addition to the flagship Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play, whose name comes from the PlayStation heritage.

It’s unclear if the 9 new models will be variants of existing models slated for various American carriers, or if those models will be entirely new models. Sony Ericsson had unveiled the XPERIA Arc at the Consumer Electronics Show at the beginning of this year, and at Mobile World Congress the XPERIA-maker had revealed the XPERIA Play, Pro, and Neo smartphones.

For its part, the XPERIA Play has already been confirmed to be launching on Verizon Wireless. Though the Sony Ericsson representative at the Game Developers Conference just recently in San Francisco, California could not comment on record about specific pricing information, the rep did say it will be aggressively priced against higher-end smartphones in the market, suggesting that the Play will be in the $150-$200 range.

The XPERIA Play brings a whole new level of game playing to smartphones. While many modern games designed for smartphones rely heavily on the touchscreen and accelerometer for interaction and control, the XPERIA Play will come with game controls and shoulder triggers, which should appeal to a more game-centric demographic. The Play, according to Sony Ericsson, was considered by Google as a potential flagship device for Android 2.3, a title which was won out by the rival Samsung Nexus S.

Blast from the past: Sony Ericsson P900 UIQ Symbian Phone

Most likely, we’ll probably see re-hashed variants of the XPERIA Arc, Play, Pro, and Neo counting as variants towards the 9 North American smartphones number as 9 entirely new Android smartphones would be very aggressive for a phone-maker who had little prior traction in the North American market in the recent past.

Sony Ericsson was known in the past for its iconic Sony Ericsson P900 smartphone, which features a flipout number pad on a touchscreen phone powered by the UIQ operating system, which is based on Symbian.
