Sony Xperia S Smartphone Now Shipping Worldwide

Published

on

The Sony Xperia S smartphone, which was announced last month at the Consumer Electronics Show, is now shipping globally and users can begin to save up for the handset if they choose. The smartphone will be the first device to abandon the Sony Ericsson branding as Sony takes over the mobile operations from the former joint venture and brings the Xperia device in-house. The device, which is seen as a spiritual successor to the Xperia Arc S, released a year ago, will launch with Android Gingerbread with a promised upgrade path to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Xperia S will be coming as a variant known as the Xperia Ion to U.S. carrier AT&T. The Ion, unlike the Xperia S, will have a larger display as well as 4G LTE support, though both screens will have a 720p resolution.

The Xperia S will launch with Sony’s UI and sport a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor. The device has a 4.3-inch 720p HD display. The handset also comes with near field communications (NFC) support as well along with support for Sony NFC tags to quickly tag the phones at different locations to enable quick toggles to settings and actions.

Though Sony has announced that the smartphone is now shipping globally, the Japanese electronics giant has yet to reveal what the pricing would be for the device.

Anyone know if the Xperia S will be released in the US?  I actually prefer that phone with the illuminated strip over the ion and am looking forward to that being my next phone.

Cool man just realized that we won’t get 4G LTE with this phone.  Do you have any experience with it?

Love the design but am not sure now as it does not have the 4G LTE.
