Sprint Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Update Appears Close

Published

on

Sprint hasn’t confirmed anything just yet but it appears that its Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update might be close, possibly as close as tomorrow, as a new build, thought to be the final build for the Sprint Galaxy S3 has appeared on Samsung’s Open Source Release Center. Samsung’s website is also listing the Sprint Galaxy S3 as running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, another sign that the update is close.

Earlier today, Sprint announced the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update. From the looks of things, that Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 update is about to be joined by another Android 4.3 update, this one for Sprint’s Galaxy S3, a device that was originally slated to get the update earlier this month but still hasn’t seen its roll out.

Sprint hasn’t announced anything just yet but there are a couple of signs pointing to an imminent Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean roll out. The first sign that we’ve been tipped off to is the emergence of a new MK3 build for the Galaxy S3 at Samsung’s Open Source Release Center. We’re told that this version, MK3, should be the final version of the Sprint Galaxy S3 update. So, barring any difficulties, this means that the Sprint Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 update could roll out as soon as tomorrow morning.

The carrier typically posts these announcements between 9:00-10:00 am CT and it makes those announcements on its support pages. Should a Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 update appear tomorrow, it will land on Sprint’s Galaxy S3 support page.

Galaxy S3 users who remain skeptical need only look at Samsung’s Sprint Galaxy S3 listing on its website. Instead of listing the device with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the device is listed as having Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, same as the Galaxy Note 2. While this doesn’t confirm anything, it is a sign that the roll out is closer than ever.

The update was originally slated to roll out on November 6th though that date came and went without a roll out. AT&T also “delayed” its Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 update though that update rolled out earlier today. Samsung was already forced to pull Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 updates in the U.S. and a Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 update in the United Kingdom so it’s possible that the companies needed to perform some extra testing.

So while nothing is set in stone, it’s looking like Galaxy S3 users on Sprint are extremely close to their Android 4.3 update though not everyone will get the software on day one. Sprint will likely roll the software out over the course of a week or more to ensure that there aren’t any issues.

Thanks again, G!

Got the OTA update for AT&T, not available over KIES. Its about 620 MB and did take a while (~3 hrs) to download. Got to explore new options at 4.3, can see a lot more AT&T, Samsung apps. Settings has changed a lot and looks like S4. Hopefully battery life stays the same as before..

AT&T Galaxy S3 got OTA last night (super slow download). I had the following issues

    – Google Play store was giving me the RPC:S-5:AEC-0 when updated. Had to remove google account and re add it
    – Contacts sync broke when I did this, correct by simply clearing the Google Contact storage(?)
    – Download Manager was constantly popping up notifications (unable to clear), again just clear the cache on the Download Manager and all set.

The phone is clearly working harder a little less available RAM, and longer boot times. The UX is actually a little quicker for some things (transitions) and a touch laggy for others load times. I am also NOT seeing any battery life issues so far.
