Students: Buy A Mac Get $100 iTunes Gift Card, Buy an iPad Get $50

Apple has a new program to entice students, teachers, and professors to buy new MacBooks this summer with its annual back to school program.

This year Apple will give $100 gift cards to any user buying a new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or iMac. The gift card is good for apps, music, movies, or games trough the iTunes Store, App Store, or Mac App Store. The gift card is on top of discount Apple offers for new Mac purchases.

Apple offers $100 discounts on the MacBook Pros and iMacs for education consumers, and $50 off MacBook Airs.

The company also offers a $50 gift card for user buying a new iPad. The gift card will buy the same items as the $100 gift card, though it obviously buys less.

Unfortunately, Apple does not offer an educational discount on the iPad or any other iOS device. It makes sense to not offer a discount on the iPhone or iPod touch, but Apple keeps talking about how useful the iPad is for productivity (though some would argue). The $500 price isn’t extremely expensive for what the iPad does, but it’d be nice to see some sort of educational discount nonetheless.

In the past Apple offered free iPod touches as part of the back to school promotion, but has since switched to the gift card model. The new model helps get users accustomed to buying digital goods, or just gives them an incentive to buy more if they already buy a number of apps, music, movies, and games.

The promotion includes computers and iPads purchased online and in store, but make sure you bring proof of student status if you head in to your local store.
