Swype sets touchscreen typing record, already set to be beaten

Published

Samsung Mobile and Swype have made it official: using Swype, Franklin Page has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the fastest touchscreen typist around. And yet, I’m not convinced.

Page blazed through 160 characters 35.54 seconds, crushing the previous record of 40.91 seconds. That’s roughly 270 characters per minute or 54 words per minute. I would be extremely impressed, except I had already seen someone else shred that with 81 wpm on his iPhone.

Granted, this iPhone user named Drewbo isn’t certified by Guinness, but seeing is believing. Some have questioned whether he sped up the video, but the keyboard ticks aren’t sped up and there’s no noticeable speed shift when he finishes the test and talks for the second half. Guess we’ll see if he can really deliver if and when Guinness accepts the application he claims to have submitted. For the record, my one-thumb style in portrait can get me into the 30 wpm range.

But then again, with the second video, he’s not typing all the “complex” words that the world record holder is. Muscle memory usually lets us type common words a lot faster.

Then again, the record holder could have been practicing his swipes for quite some time before trying for the record… ;) Do they tell you in advance what text they’ll make you type? I’m assuming there’s atleast some kind of consistancy among each record try. There would atleast be a flesch kincaid (Is that how you spell it?) reading level that it would have to be at I’m assuming, and I’d also assume iphone video’s reading level is far below what guinness makes you type ;)

Right on both counts. iPhone test used common words chosen at random. Swype test uses a preset passage that includes uncommon words, though all are included in its dictionary.

I hope he kicks the crap out of all those idiots that say a capacitive touch-screen is crap compared to a physical keyboard. If a normal user can type 40 wpm on a capacitive keyboard that should be good enough not to need a physical keyboard. I can’t wait to see how fast one can type on the iPad in horizontal mode.
