TAG Heuer Brings Luxury to Android with New Link Smartphone

Published

on

If you’re sick of the cheap, plastic build of your current Android smartphone, perhaps you’ll be intrigued in Tag Heuer’s $5,000 Link phone creation, which melds luxurious metal, alligator leather, Gorilla Glass screen, and more. Puzzling, though, is why Tag didn’t go with a sapphire crystal screen considering the company’s legacy in making watches.

Dubbed as the world’s first luxury Swiss phone, the device is made to withstand the elements and hopefully daily wear and tear. Pre-loaded with Android 2.2, Tag is hoping to roll out an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the device. Water-proof, air sealed, and shock resistant, the device comes in either stainless steel, 18k rose gold, or titanium, and can be outfitted with leather, alligator skin, or pedestrian rubber.

Par for the course for high-end devices are all the sensors and radios, including 3G connectivity, SIM card slot for a tri-band WCDMA experience on a GSM network. The downside is a paltry 256 MB RAM and an 8 GB memory card, though you can bring your own 32 GB card if you’d like.

There is also a 5-megapixel camera and the 3.5-inch WVGA screen will show off your pictures and the pre-loaded wallpapers beautifully. Price starts at around $5,000.

Perhaps with a new partnership between Nokia and Microsoft, we’ll eventually see a luxury Windows Phone 7 from Nokia under its Vertu brand in the future to compete with Tag Heuer.

I don’t know if the sapphire glass screen would’ve worked as well for a touchscreen.
