What’s Apple Doing Today?

applelogo While Rob, Truc, and Sierra are on planes to CES 2009 and I prepare to leave tomorrow, focus in the geek world today is on MacWorld and what Apple will or will not offer.

Some of the big news seems to be centered around the fact that Apple will be easing or losing its Digital Rights Management (DRM) on its music, in exchange for letting the studios use variable pricing for new releases and hot songs. We’ll have to see how that occurs and in what form.

Is Apple Blocking Google’s Chrome Browser on Me.com?

mechrome Last month I made the change from an Exchange hosted service to Apple’s MobileMe / Me.com . So far, I’ve been pretty impressed with the services, the cost, and the reliability of the sync process. Apple has clearly made some headway since the disastrous launch last year.

However, all is not good in Google Chrome and Me.com land.

Why are Movie Apps Moving to the Cloud?

movieslate First Microsoft decided to move Windows Movie Maker to its Live suite of apps. If you haven’t tried out the cloud version, save yourself the trouble. It is a painful experience, and one I’m not looking forward to when the desktop client is dropped in Windows 7. (To be fair, I think it is still in beta.)

Now comes word that Apple wants to transition iMovie to an on-line app as well. Why?

Large Format iPod Touch - The Apple Tablet?

image Techcrunch is reporting from ‘reliable sources’ that there is going to be a new large format iPod Touch coming in the fall of next year.  Could this be the ‘Apple Tablet’ we’ve been waiting to get our hands on?  I agree with most of the statements in the article and they make sense, but for me it’s going to have to be more than just a iPod that’s bigger…  It’s going to have to do more because I don’t see a lot of sales if everyone (millions at least) already have a Touch or iPhone.  Being a bigger ‘gaming’ device with iPod functionality doesn’t do it either, the point of most music players are to be small.  I don’t doubt the sources about a larger device, it seems a long time coming, but it’s going to have to be a lot more than just a big iPod for the masses to run for it like they did for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

2009 Predictions: Warner’s Take

me Here we go with my predictions for what we’ll see, what we’ll talk about, what’ we’ll laud, and what we’ll moan about in the coming year. If I do say so myself, I did pretty well with my 2008 predictions, but that is no guarantee that I have any great leg up on what I’m sensing in 2009. After all, with the world still struggling to understand what the ramifications from economic news may or may not be, who really knows what we’ll be dealing with throughout the next year. The one prediction I’m sure about though is that by the end of 2009, there will be predictions for 2010.

That said, here we go (after the jump) with my predictions for 2009. Take ‘em or leave ‘em.

2009 Predictions: Matthew’s Take

mattdBehold my predictions for the great, forthcoming year of 2009.  The following thoughts are what I’d like to see happen with a dash of what I believe will happen.  Gaze with me into the crystal ball:

Mobile Computing

  • The term “netbook” becomes a household name because many homes have adopted one or two as a second computer, child’s computer, or mobile companion.  Features, build quality, and battery life improve while price points still hover around $350.  More options for Continue reading

App Store Updates Are Dizzying and Sometimes Silly

app_store-jpeg-image-640x480-pixelsChristmas sales may be down in the traditional and on-line outlets, but from watching the Apple App Store, it looks like developers are going crazy trying to fill up the store with applications for the pre-Christmas and post-Christmas rush. I monitor a couple of feeds of new and updated apps and my feedreader is constantly crammed with new updates. And I mean crammed, it is the most volume of any tech news sector that I’m seeing.

Scrooged: Apple Cancels Christmas

The Apple orchard is reeling. News today that Steve Jobs won’t be doing the keynote at MacWorld in a few weeks is upsetting a lot of the faithful, but that’s not all. In addition, Apple has announced that this will be their last appearance at Macworld as well. And as if that wasn’t enough, Apple announced one more thing: Apple has decided this is the last year for Christmas.

CUPERTINO, California—December 16, 2008—Apple® today announced that this is the last year for Christmas. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, spoke at a joint press conference held with Santa Claus at the North Pole this morning. He announced: "Apple has been honored to work with the North Pole the last several years to make Christmas possible, however, we have decided together that this is the last year for Christmas."

Check it out here.

Netbooks, The Bottom, and Apple Speculation

me2MacWorld is around the corner, there are more rumors than in baseball’s Hot Stove League, and many of them are centering on whether Apple will enter the Netbook market or not. Intriguingly some of the speculation focuses on the device profit margins (or lack thereof.)

Scoring My 2008 Predictions

me1The end of the year brings scores of predictions and posts, columns, and reports on what we’ll see in the next year. We each do predictions here at GBM. I’m gearing up for my 2009 predictions, but first here’s a look back at my 2008 predictions to see how much of a predictor I really am.

Latest Firefox Beta 3.1 Has Multi-touch Support

Interesting news. Very interesting news, but with all the GPU and memory issues swirling around I don’t think I’ll go buy a Macbook to test it out just yet.

The latest Firefox Beta has multi-touch support for the OSX using the multi-touch capabilities of the trackpad.

As quoted from MacRumors:
