Asus EEE PC Tablet - More pics of the T101 H
As Rob posted from the floor, Asus aims to impress again with a tablet version of the ever popular EEE PC. Even though this can be seen as just another EEE device, the significance of that swiveling hinge cannot be understated. The device will have a resistive touch screen and will make a compelling case for people looking for an ultra-small Fujitsu P1630 alternative. Check out more pics after the jump.
Netbooks Dominate Amazon’s Cyber Monday Sale
And you wonder why Intel’s VP of Sales and Marketing Stu Pann is poo-pooing Netbooks. PCWorld is reporting that Netbooks dominated Amazon.com’s Cyber Monday sales in computers. The Asus 900HA took the top slot followed by the Acer Aspire One and it looks like folks opted for the 6-cell battery option across the board. No real surprise there.
The Asus Eee PC in Leather
I’m not quite sure how I feel about this one and it makes me wonder if somebody doesn’t have too much time on their hands. According to Eee PC News, (link is translated) there is now an Asus Eee 901 PC mod with a leather case. I’m not talking a case to slip the Netbook in, I’m talking about the case of the device itself. Like I said, I’m not quite sure how I feel about this.

Fight! Acer Says Aspire One Will Outship Asus Eee PC
Call it a war of words, or a war of claims, or just good old fashioned competition. Whatever you call it the Netbook wars are heating up. Acer says shipments of its Aspire One Netbook will outpace Asus and the vaunted Eee PC by about 1 million units. Asus is predicted 5 million units shipped and Acer is aiming for 6 million. I’m thinking this means Asus will release 10 more models in the next two weeks.

Windows 7 on the Asus Eee PC
Like we said, it wouldn’t take long before we saw more. Laptop Mag installed the pre-beta of Windows 7 on the Asus Eee PC 1000H. Aside from some video playback issues they seemed pleased at the result. Check out what Joanna has to say here. And remember folks, this is pre-beta land.
The Best Mobile PCs for Writers
I love to write about technology, life, and other topics that just come to mind. Productive writing, though, requires a decent keyboard, and in my opinion, tablet pc technology. The two go hand-in-hand: a great keyboard for pounding out those articles, and tablet pc technology for brainstorming, reading, marking up, and researching.
Although Crave missed out on the tablet pc aspect, they generally hit the nail on the head for what writers should look for, and avoid, in mobile pcs. I’d agree with them on the netbook: the keyboards and screen sizes are going to generally be too small for comfort. I’ve found the sweet spot with 12″ - 13″ notebooks / tablet pcs, and those that have full size keyboards like the Lenovo X200 / X301, MacBook, and Dell Latitude XT. My daughter, Maggie, has recently taken to writing, and she found the keyboard on the Asus 901 to be too cramped. I moved her to the X200 and she felt much more comfortable.
What mobile pc would you recommend to the budding writer?
Eee PCs and iPods Going on Sale at Toys R Us
Somehow I knew this would happen with the Eee PC. The iPod caught me by suprise though. According to an article on CrunchGear in just a few weeks here in the US we’ll start seeing the Asus Eee PC and iPods on sale at Toys R Us. Apparently there will be four models of the Eee starting at $269 and running up to $299. This will be interesting to watch as parents try to sort out that Linux vs XP thing. Or should I say sales floor folk?
Using the Eee PC as a DJ
Nothing like a little wine, a little music, a little dancing in the square, and a little mobile device. Xavier at Notebooks.com took a little trip to Venice and found himself in one of those wonderful town squares with restaurants, music, and dancing. Being the intrepid mobile geek reporter that he is, Xavier noticed that the device running the music was an Asus Eee PC 900, tethered to a 3G phone to pull down the music that folks requested.
One question though, Xavier. Why no pictures of you dancing the night away?
Laptop Mag Interviews Asus CEO on Sales Figures, Touch, and More
Interesting interview from Laptop Magazine that is worth a read. Joanna Stern chatted with Asus CEO Jerry Shen and got some interesting answers from the man who runs the company that shook everything up this year.
You should read the entire review but Joanna listed these highlights:
- Four million Eee PCs have been sold to date. He plans to reach the goal of 5 million Eee PC sales by the end of 2008.
- Touch-enabled Eee PCs are on the way and will be here by early 2009. Shen didn’t share the details of the form factor, though he said they are exploring a convertible mode and a regular laptop form for touch-enabled Eee PCs. They will also run Windows 7 as early as mid-2009.
- Several skus of the Eee PC give customers numerous choices and allow them to find the Eee PC that best fits their needs.
- The Eee Family continues to grow with the EeeTop this month (that has an Easy Mode for Windows XP) and more products that will be announced at CES in January 2009.
Touch Screen Announcements Targeting Windows 7
With details about Windows 7 about to be unveiled at PDC2008, it looks like some OEMs are beginning to let slip some info about their devices that are going to incorporate the touch capabilities included in the new OS. DigiTimes is reporting that Asus is readying touch screen Eee PCs for the first or second quarter in 2009. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that HP is readying a touch screen laptop that may debut before the end of this year. Both tidbits of information place possible release dates ahead of the “known” schedule for Windows 7, but I’m guessing these would be moves to be out front of the rest. That said, don’t look for others to be sitting on the sideline. I anticipate seeing a number of touch screen devices at CES2009 this January.
Keep in mind that HP already has a line of touch screen Tablet PCs (the tx2500 series) as well as its TouchSmart series for the desktop, so this is no departure for them there.
GBM InkShow: My Wife and the EeePC
The Asus Eee PC has certainly captured a lot of attention for its small size and low price of $399. Is it the mobile solution for its target market of young people and non-power users, who just need to send out an email, or create a quick document? Time will certainly tell, but in this GBM InkShow, I put the Asus Eee PC in the hands of my wife, Thomasin Savaiano, who is admittedly not a power user or a geek, and sits squarely in the audience that Asus is trying to reach.
In this first, in what I hope will be a series of reports as she gets to know the Eee PC, I basically place the device in front of her and watch as she discovers some of its capabilities and how they might mesh with how she normally works. Her honest responses are quite telling so far, and I’m anxious to see how they may or may not change over the next period of time. So, if you’re interested in this device, or know someone in your family who might be, sit back, relax, and enjoy the tour.
