FlipStart Price Rollback
WOW - Talk about a "Blue Light Special" The FlipStart is now the owner of half the price tag. The unit was just at $1499.00 the other day and is now selling for $699.00. Is this a sign of the FlipStart going under? It looks to me like it is about the price we all thought it should have been from the start.

UMPC Shootout: FlipStart, OQO 02, Sony UX280P
The Boy Genius Report just posted a great comparison of the Vulcan FlipStart, the OQO Model 02, and the Sony UX280P. He compares nearly all facets of each system, from design and portability to feature set and configurability. If you are trying to decide on a 4" screen device, this is a must-read.
I’ve used all three myself, although I’ve never had the opportunity to compare them directly. My favorite is the OQO, hands-down. Small Tablet PCs like the OQO are hard to find, and the active digitizer is even more rare. The biggest point in the OQO’s favor for me - it just feels good in my hands. The tactile feel of the unit is just a pleasure for me. The Sony would come in second, but it felt oddly thick to me. Personal preference. The FlipStart was a non-starter for me. No touch screen, no digitizer. It’s just a tiny laptop.

My final thoughts; While I was a bit skeptical at first on how I would take to the “clamshell” factor of such a small unit and the touch pad, but I found it a pleasant experience to use. The FlipStart is a very solid machine and performs quite well with Windows-XP Professional and the included MS Office applications. I would however have liked to have time to do a comparison with the OQO Model-02 that I own running Windows Vista but time was limited. Perhaps I can talk the powers that be at Dynamism into a couple more weeks to do some side-by-side comparisons of these two units. Anyway, we would like to thank the folks at Dynamism.com for providing us this evaluation unit.

FlipStart Price Drops by $500
It seems $2k was a bit too steep for those looking at the FlipStart. The price just dropped by $500 in hopes of becoming more competitive in the ultra-portable market.

September 25, 2007 — Seattle, WA — FlipStart Labs today introduced the FlipStart Snap Camera, the first snap-in accessory for the FlipStart® super compact PC. The Snap Camera easily snaps onto the lid of the FlipStart PC. The FlipStart Snap Camera is available today at www.flipstart.com and from selected resellers for $149.99 USD.
The Snap Camera delivers up to five mega pixel resolution photographs (with included software) and VGA-quality video recording with digital zoom and a software package that enables features such as editing and remote monitoring.
“From taking snapshots and video to conducting remote monitoring, the FlipStart Snap Camera provides a range of new functionality for the FlipStart,” said Robin Budd, general manager for FlipStart Labs. “The FlipStart Snap Camera is fun and practical, and shows just one of the many uses for the custom accessory port built into the FlipStart. We look forward to working with third party developers to develop additional uses for the custom accessory port.”
In the U.S., every FlipStart compact PC is equipped to run on the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network supporting the faster data speeds of EV-DO Rev. A technology where available. Sprint reaches more than 211 million people nationwide in more than 10,582 cities and 1,002 airports with faster EV-DO Rev. A technology; Sprint has upgraded the vast majority of its mobile broadband network to EV-DO Rev. A and the rollout continues to further enhance coverage for customers.
