Mindjet is a popular name in mindmapping software. Many Tablet PC users considered MindManager a key App not just because of its excellent mind mapping ability but also because you could do your work in Digital Ink. Mindjet has previously released MindJet for iOS that give you much of the mind mapping functionality, without the digital ink of course as a part of its mobile strategy.

Now, it looks like Mindjet wants to head into the Android Market and instead of releasing a version of its own software, it has acquired Thinking Space, a company that already has a mind mapping App on the Android platform that has already sold over million copies of that App.

I’ve used the Mindjet App for iOS as well as another product iThoughtsHD for some mind mapping but have not used Thinking Space. I’m curious to hear from any users who may have used this App.

As this TechCrunch article points out, Mindjet isn’t making a big deal about the purchase but is making a big deal about having an App on the Android platform.

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and more recently Square, lays out three keys to success at The 99 Percent. Top of his list? “1) Draw: get your idea out of your head and share it”. Great advice, and it ties into something we’ve said again and again and can’t say enough: tablets are ideal tools for getting ideas out of your head.

Ideas are wonderful, but you can’t do anything with them while they’re trapped in your noggin. They need to be set free.

Pen input lets you easily write out your thoughts, either freeform or tied together in a mindmap using software like one of our favorites, Mindjet MindManager. And of course, I must mention OneNote and Evernote as store-alls for your expressed thoughts. More importantly, pen input doesn’t limit you to words. Dorsey advocates drawing your ideas, not writing them. Throw in some words as needed, but don’t be constrained by the rigidity of text.

Even if you are tied to text, such as on touch-only tablets like the iPad or on a phone, there are plenty of mindmapping apps to help you throw out your ideas with words and icons. We’ve seen iPhone apps for Mindjet and MindMaker. James Kendrick wrote up a solid review of iThoughts for the iPad. Mindmaps let you rearrange your thoughts, visualize the connections, and organize the mess.

I personally prefer to let my ideas stew in the back of my mind for a while to let my subconscious work on them, but when it’s time for action, that’s when my pen goes to work. Not saying pen input is the only or best way to follow Dorsey’s advice, but it sure makes it easy.

A new version of Mindjet MindManager, one of the most pen-friendly pieces of software for the Tablet PC, has just been announced for Mac.

No mention of similar pen support for Mac, but among the new features is gesture support for multitouch trackpad and Magic Mouse, which would also be useful on a touchscreen Mac. No reason to read any further into that, so I’ll assume the timing is just a hedge in case a tablet running Mac OS X is announced tomorrow. Full list of new features after the jump.

Yep, there’s an app for that. The app will cost you $7.99 and you certainly don’t have all the features you have on the desktop/notebook/Tablet PC version, but if you want to create a quick mindmap while you’re toodling around this might be a great tool.

You can transfer maps back to your PC to do more work and expand your ideas via Bonjour and Safari or IE. Obviously there’s no Inking available for Tablet PC fans. I have not had the opportunity to download and try this out yet, but I’m looking forward to giving it a go.

MindManager is one of the most flexible applications I’ve ever used, with countless ways to apply it to a particular need or workstyle. I use their tablet pc features to ink a lot of mind maps, especially while in portrait mode. There is something about working in portrait mode with a tablet pc and MindManager that gets those creative juices flowing.

Although MindManager is well rounded and they continue to improve it with each release, I have found one area that has needed to be addressed ever since the first tablet pc version was released: the ability to search in ink in notes. Text in notes are searchable, but ink isn’t. I’ve notified MindJet about this issue with each release, but it never rises up the priority list of fixes.

How would you improve MindManager to make it a better product? If you don’t use MindManager, what new features or fixes would cause you to give it a second look? Is there actually too much in MindManager that you find it overwhelming to use? How would you suggest they make it easier for new users to get mind mapping right away?

These days most of the projects and stuff I’ve got swirling around my brain is being organized and stored in MindManager 8. I love the program because of the way I can creatively organize buckets of information around how I think and work, and how it lets others organize around how they think and work. Since they sell both PC and Mac version, I can keep working on the same map across both platforms.

Here is a sample of my current “Stuff” map. I normally operate in the “Now” bucket. The “Now” bucket are things of the highest priority or things I plan on accomplishing within the next day or two. When I’m finished, I’ll mark them as done (normally by using the Strike Through font treatment), then move them to Finished. I’ll then drag things up from the “Next Up” bucket to the “Now” bucket in order of priority. Stuff in the “Later” bucket are several weeks to several months out. I’ll do general brainstorming in the other categories and then move them around as I need to focus on them.

How do you keep on top of all the stuff floating around your head so you don’t lose track of all that you have / want to do?

From Michael Deutch:

I created a map to quickly test MindManager 8′s integration with the following Google applications:

Gmail

Google Docs

Google Presentations

Google Spreadsheets

Google Reader

What I like most about these Google Doc examples is that they are all collaborative. In other words, you not only link files to your maps but other members of your team can access and update the files too. Think about the possibilities! Updated progress reports, project status, finanical summaries, etc

Tom McKee:

I have been using Mindmanager since 2003 to manage addiction treatment programs, personal projects and most successfully to help addicts get and stay clean. The visual mapping of high risk situations, relapse processes, irrational thought processes and brainstorming pro-recovery behaviors, problem solving and more rational thought processes is well suited to the addict in early recovery that is affected by the brain dysfunction of active addiction. Unfortunately I unexpectedly lost my job in 2005 and along with it my tablet pc, I visit your site almost daily dreaming of the time I will have once again a slate. My version of MindManager is X5 Pro and though I have downloaded each new version as a trial I have not yet been able to afford to upgrade. Currently I am managing a Drug Court for a Judicial District in Oregon, I have two teams of about 14 each, including 2 Judges, 6 District Attorneys, 12 public defenders, 4 treatment providers, 4 Probation officers and two child welfare workers. We are in the process of revamping the program to meet the requirements of our funding source. This is proving to be quite a project getting two separate teams in two separate Counties to reach consensus in order to move forward in a timely manner is quite frustrating. So I would put to use the Mindjet Player function of Version 8 as soon as it was loaded to move forward building consensus among this large diverse group of players. Automated task management would give me a leg up as I manage the weekly reports to the court, case-management of participants, grant writing, budget management, public relations work and team coordination that make up my daily tasks. Integrated MS office file editing would streamline my consent switching between word, excel, and PowerPoint. The Database linker would be great as all data is contained in MS Access. As for the Integrated web content and the embedded web browser these functions would be quickly put to use as I move forward with a web based recovery enhancement tool, that has been a project I have been working on for some time now waiting for just these functions to appear in MindManager. So as you can see I could really use this new version of MindManager. The only thing that would make me happier would be if someone would offer me a tablet to replace my well used Satellite Pro 6100. Thanks for the chance GBN and for keeping me lusting for a tablet once again.

Michael Wilson

I am a boy scout professional, I manage 2500 youth and the dozen plus events that happens each year. We need to plan in the office with mulitple people to make sure the event is well planned. I am exited to see how the editing within mindmanger of word and excel document will be. It will be great to be able to use my x60t and this program together to keep things flowing with inking. The key feature I look foward to trying in the next 30days and beyond is the seeing the critical tasks. We are called the professional jugglers from the volunteer boy scouts because the we are managing 15,000 youth as council with a paid staff of 15. We can use all the help we can to make our time the most effiective to make the program the best we can for the scouts.

Jeff Pollard:

As a pastor, the overseer of six worldwide ministries, and the editor of a quarterly magazine, I use MM7 for numerous projects and planning, and MM8 looks like a great improvement. For the magazine I edit, MM let’s me plan authors, articles, sequence, themes in monthly and yearly formats. I can see at a glance the way a year’s worth of magazines came together. Being able to integrate file editing with Word and Excel would be especially helpful. Keeping track of schedules for projects is important as well. I also keep the membership of the church mapped out with personal information, prayer requests, members, ages and genders of family members. I can add and delete information with ease. Sermon preparation takes on a new perspective as I map out main and sub-points. I can easily arrange and rearrange sermon material as I exegete a passage. Dropping in notes and Biblical text has been something of a challenge, but the new integration file editing would probably take care of that! Being a pastor constantly presents me with the personal problems and challenges that the congregation faces. MM let’s me visualize the elements of an individual’s problems and then work toward resolution. It is truly amazing how helpful it is to think through problems in various aspects of the ministry visually. It’s also great for brainstorming with my fellow-elder. I have also used MM for planning conferences. Since we plan to rebuild our website, being able to browse while working in MM8 looks extremely helpful. Connection with our website would take on a new dimension. This is truly helpful program, and I look forward to the new version.

MindManager 8 continues to break new ground for the mind mapper.

Video review and much more after the break.

With version 8 released earlier this week, Mindjet has made it easier to stay in that critical ““brainstorming mode” by keeping you in MindManager while editing documents and doing web research. New features like the embedded browser, web services, integrated document editing, database management, and task management make version 8 a very worthwhile upgrade. In addition, the new Mindjet Player, which adds an interactive map to a shareable PDF, makes sharing your maps even easier for your colleagues that don’t have MindManager.

As good as these improvements are, it feels like the Tablet PC support has been frozen in time since version 6, though. In my video review, I show areas where Mindjet did not think of the Tablet PC user at all, and in fact, still have the same bugs that have been reported for several years. Where’s the Tablet PC love Mindjet? If you feel the same way I do, let Mindjet know here.

As I show in this video review, though, version 8 is still a very worthwhile upgrade, and I can’t recommend it enough.

There are a ton of new features under the covers that help keep you inside MindManager while brainstorming, researching, planning, and managing projects — keeping all the information you need just a topic away.

I’ve been beta testing MindManager 8 for about a month now, and although there are no new tablet pc features, I think mind mapping folks will be quite impressed. A free 30 day trial is available. Upgrades are $129, while a new license costs $349.

Contest Time: We think MindManager is such an indispensible tool for the Tablet PC user, we are giving away one license to a lucky GBM reader. All you have to do to enter is post a comment to this article about how mind mapping and the new features in MindManager 8 will help you in your day to day work. We’ll pick a winner sometime on Wednesday, so hurry up and get your entries in!

Meanwhile, stay tuned for an InkShow as I demo all of these new features, as well as go over the tablet pc features.

Mindjet Player

Communicate your vision and ideas with the world by transforming your map into a fully interactive Adobe PDF file. Or publish it as an interactive Adobe Flash file to a Web page or blog. Recipients do not need to download and install any software — most desktops are already equipped for consuming these standard file formats.

Automated Task Management

Get a quick overview plus ongoing progress on all project tasks—automatically. Visual cues and status indicators allow you to quickly determine the status of critical activities. View the ripple effect of any changes to a map and even run ““what if” scenarios to see the resulting outcomes.

Integrated Microsoft Office File Editing

View and edit attached Microsoft Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint files within MindManager. No need to disrupt your focus by constantly switching between applications — it can all happen from your map.

Integrated Web Content

Fully leverage the incredible information resources of the Internet by initiating Web searches right from a map. Real-time search results will appear whenever you view your map. Build your own Web service to add information from your company’s information systems.

Embedded Web Browser

View Web pages and Adobe PDF documents without leaving your map. You’ll retain your train of thought by staying focused on work at hand.

Database Linker

Setup and display real-time information in your map from databases, Excel spreadsheets, CRM systems and other company resources. Just imagine how much more productive and focused you’ll be with your most critical business data right at your fingertips.

Powerful Search

MindManager now lets you search through your maps and all attached documents with ease. Or use one of today’s popular desktop search applications. Rest easy, knowing any bit of information you may need is just a quick search away.

Mindjet Connect Ribbon Tab

Enjoy fast access to all Mindjet Connect features and management utilities.

If you haven’t yet given mind mapping a go, it makes for some good reasons why you might want to consider it.

I have to say though that I didn’t take to mind mapping easily at first, but now that I have wrapped my brain around it, it is not only an essential tool in and of itself, but the simple act of sitting down with my Tablet PC and doing some thinking and planning via mind mapping also has a very zen-like effect for me. I use MindJet’s MindManager sofware for those needs and I have to say I really enjoy the benefits.

My only problem is finding the time to do so.

This will be good news for those who use MindManager and need to do some project managment. MindJet, the makers of the excellent mindmapping tool, MindManager, has acquired JCVGantt, a project managing tool. I’ve used and continue to use MindManager as one of my core apps, but have never used JCVGantt, but it looks like this will be an interesting addition to the MindJet family and for users.

On Sunday afternoons, I normally sit back in a quiet area in our house to do some reading, as well as planning for the next week. I’m normally in tablet mode, sitting back in a recliner, working in MindManager for the planning part. The really nice part of a Sunday afternoon is turning the Tablet off and getting in to some good reading ( which typically leads to a great nap! )

In our weekend discussion of why a person should look at a Tablet PC, the value of the below MindManager map is hard to explain to someone. Notice the personal handwriting, links to Outlook emails, links to sections in OneNote, and more. This is typically a map I’ll work out of the entire week, make changes / additions, etc. Sure, a person can MindMap and hyperlink with a regular notebook, but nothing compares to working in tablet mode and doing it with a pen. I’m able to stay much more creative when working with a pen than with a keyboard.

Ok, time to run. There is a big, fluffy pillow calling my name.

The extreme cold, that is. Mindjet just announced the completion of a 5 year planning process for an Ice Warrior team trekking the Northwest Passage and making a try for the Arctic Pole.

This latest expedition with a team of novices, marshalled by world famous Arctic-explorer, Jim McNeill, will attempt an extreme polar journey that will thoroughly explore the North West Passage. Jim will then return to his base camp in Resolute Bay, the second most northerly community in Canada before attempting to reach the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility in a crucial scientific exploration of the Arctic Ocean, by aircraft. The pole otherwise known as the Arctic Pole, has never before been reached and stands as the very last World First in Polar history. The planning for this epic journey started in 2003 under the leadership of Jim and with the use of MindManager, a visual information mapping tool. The software was used by the Ice Warrior team to plan all their logistics and critical contingency measures down to the extreme detail during the preparation of this human endurance test.

This has to be the most incredibly complex mind-mapping that I’ve ever heard of. You can read about the story in the press release, but I hope to hear more about how they team actually does with the trek.

I can see how capturing the screen, adding ink notes/arrows and sending it to MindManager would be very useful during a technical session. I was in one last week and would have like to use it then… Maybe I need to take a look at that link for the MM plugin for SnagIt.

We’ve linked to Tony Buzan’s iMindMap software and videos on mind mapping before. Mr. Buzan has published some new videos and articles that might be worth a look if you are just starting to explore mind mapping. The articles lay out the principals of mind mapping and the videos do the same but from obviously a more visual approach.

After we first linked to iMindMap several users here gave it a try, as did I. For what it is worth on a Tablet PC, I prefer using MindJet’s MindManager. MindManager works much more intuitively with a Tablet PC and Inking in my opinion. But remember there are different strokes for different folks, so you might want to give iMindMap a try. There is a 30 day free trial for you to give it a go.
