Dennis and I are enjoying getting to know the folks from Apex Software. Dennis had a great conversation with them earlier this week, and we are planning to get together at CES in a couple of weeks. Apex Software develops business applications for customers in the real estate and mobile professional market, and have announced [...]
So, here’s a Christmas Wish List for Tablet PC, UMPC, and mobile enthusiasts. No, it isn’t about what gadgets I’d like under the tree. It is more about things I’d like to see occur. Many of which are already on the way. Call me an impatient old elf. I’d like to see manufacturers of small [...]
Josh Bancroft has been providing some really good coverage of the Asus R2H UMPC on Tiny Screenfuls, inlcuding more pictures than you can count, an unboxing video, and a look at Vista on the R2H. He’s recently posted a list of questions from readers and his answers. Good info if you’re looking at this popular [...]
Now here’s an intriguing use for a Ultra-Mobile PC if you live in geekdom. Chris Pirillo and Ponzi’s wedding has been perhaps the most blogged about wedding in history. Turns out they not only blogged about the wedding and preparations but read their wedding vows from two TabletKiosk eo’s (the white version of course.) What’s [...]
The prolific UMPC blogger, CTitanic, has developed and released a Beta of Inkoogle, described as a Universal Web Searching Tool with Ink Support. Desgined for ink searching in Google and Wikipedia, CTitanic used the new Inkanalyze API from Microsoft. Guess what? It’s freeware. Here’s the link to download and here’s more info.
Seeing the value of mobile devices like the Ultra-Mobile PC, GiveMePower has just announced two new ultra-mobile solutions for its surveying and inspection software. It is a good sign to see the corporate up-take on the Ultra-Mobile PC platform, and TabletKiosk’s making headway in that area. From ccnMatthews.com: GiveMePower Corporation (OTCBB:GMPW), today launched two new ultra-mobile [...]
TabletPCReviewSpot.com has put together a Tablet PC Holiday Gift Guide that includes a number of accessories for your Tablet PC. You might want to email a link to this around. Check it out here.
Craig Pringle, a Tablet PC MVP, takes a detailed look at the Motion Computing LS800 Tablet PC docking solution (see Warner’s post below). Having used an LS800 and the mobile dock, I agree with Craig. It is a very flexible solution, and one that other UMPC and Tablet PC OEMs should look to model. When [...]
Very clever. Mark at Ultranauts has penned a nice tongue-in-cheek Tablet PC Hardware Dictionary for those looking to understand some of the lingo. A couple of my favorites: Tabletscape – A parallel universe where ink is King, OneNote is Queen and guys like Kevin Tofel can be rock stars. Apple Tablet – See Fairytales, Myths and [...]
Just when I thought I’d broken the addiction, James Kendrick and Marc Orchant, Those Tablet PC Podcasting Guys come back with a new show. OTRWTPCs #33 looks to be another fun time with two of my favorite podcasters as they talk about the Fujitsu P1610, Marc’s upcoming trip to Finland (that’s going mobile!) and of [...]
This third installment of the Asus R2H Ultra Mobile PC InkShows is focused on the GPS functionality. In this InkShow, I go out with the R2H in my car to see how the built in GPS unit keeps track of my position. I give an overview while using Microsoft MapPoint 2006. I take a quick drive to demonstrate the [...]
I’ve been waiting for this review to be published. The prolific CTitanic has put together a review of the Fujitsu P1610 Tablet PC and he gives it a thorough going over. GBM Readers wll recollect all of Rob’s Inkshows and notes about the 1610 (here, here, here, and here), but it is great to get [...]
MetaFacts has just finished a report on Mobile PC usage entitled “Mobile PC Profile Report”. In this report, they take a look at how mobile users shop for and use their PCs. It looks like a fascinating report that ISVs, OEMs, VARs, and those interested in Tablet PCs and Mobile PCs should read. This report [...]
The M*Free is one of those converged devices that looks it wants to be everything to every body. Created by MIU the device has a number of different cartridges that slide in and out of the base depending on what you’re usage is. The HDPC (stands for Hybrid Dual Portable Computer) is supposedly capable of [...]
Funny stuff. The gang at Ultranauts ponders the question in the headline of this post with some visual evidence. We all know that Dennis Rice looks a lot like some former politician or the other. And I’ve been told that I bear an uncanny resemblance to Martin Mull before. But, I’m not so sure about [...]
Loren Heiny links to this intriguing looking pen and ink game, Euclidean Crisis, that was written using the Tablet PC SDK and speech API. According to the game’s site it is designed to be used with a touchscreen stylus and voice commands and can also be played with a mouse. Check out a video of [...]
Not happy with the on-screen keyboad options on your Ultra-Mobile PC, or the other choices on the market? Why not do what Ticondergoa did and create your own. Well, actually you can take advantage of Ticonderoga’s programming prowess and use his. On-Screen Keyboards really are a matter of personal preference when you think about it, [...]
Sung to know tune whatsoever. Help me! Help me! Which Tablet is right for me? Lenovo? Fujitsu? Or perhaps a UMPC? Bluetooth? WWAN? Edge or Verizon? More new choices just over the horizon. High res? Touch? Wide or small? Which screen to choose? I’m so afraid I’ll pick wrong , I’m sure to loose. Core Duo or Core 2? Vista [...]
Yeah, yeah, we’re all used to the mainstream media ignorning or missing the point about Tablet PCs and UMPCs. Wired Mag should know better though. They’ve published one of those roundup review articles where they look at different categories of PCs and mobile gear, putting them through various tests. Interesting omission in their Laptop roundup, [...]
Looks like there is some news regarding the OQO Tablet PC. Engadget is posting some news from the FCC that has this information: Passed on the 5ghz band 802.11a 2 bands on teh 2.4 ghz band 802.11b and g (NO cellular though) 3.5 x 5.5 inches That’s about all they have right now, it will be [...]
One of the vendors we are planning on visiting while at CES is Black Diamond Advanced Technology, the makers of the SwitchBack Ultra-Mobile PC. The SwitchBack is a rugged UMPC, with a built-in thumb keyboard, that also features something very unique: plug-in modules for the back of the UMPC. Here is a list of current modules available for [...]
Loren Heiny is at it again. This time he’s working on an inkable SideBar Gadget for the Sidebar in Windows Vista. He’s in the early stages, and teasing us a bit with some neat pictures. Love to see this come to be. Being able to jot a quick note in the Sidebar just makes so [...]
Are you going to CES in January? Lots of folks around the Tablet PC and UMPC space are planning on going, including, hopefully, the entire GBM team. It is always a good time to put faces with names, compare tablets, meet with OEMs and ISVs, etc. You can expect a lot of news and video reporting from [...]

Mark Polino is discovering something I’ve known for awhile. Not only is OneNote a great tool for compiling lists and tasks, it is a great Christmas Shopping aid. He writes about in this blog entry, My First OneNote Christmas, telling about using a password protected tab for his shopping list, and also how he uses [...]
It is still in the works or concept stage, but this tiny Ultra-Mobile from Fujitsu certainly looks Origami-like. It folds up small enough to fit in your pocket. According to T3, designers are working to bring it from concept to reality. Check out the very brief video and pictures here. Very intriguing. Via jkOnTheRun. [...]

Throughout the year, I’ve made it no secret that the Lenovo Thinkpad X41 has been my favorite convertible Tablet PC. I thorougly enjoyed it – the size, the keyboard, the weight, the extended battery, etc. The only negative I had was the speed – it handled my day to day to tasks well, but after [...]
A lot of excitement the other day when Woot put refurbished Samsung Q1 ultra-mobile pcs on sale for $750. They sold out the 193 units very quickly. According to this report on UMPC Buzz they sold one unit every 4 minutes. I happen to agree with CTitanic that this is a very strong indicator of [...]
Twisted Logic. Actually that’s the name of the blog where Mike started a discussion about the differences between inking on an active digitizer and a passive touch screen. Yes, there are differences and he covers them in a comparison between the Lenovo Thinkpad X41 and the Samsung Q1. Kevin Tofel of jkOnTheRun picked up the conversation [...]
A tip from Pro-crastinator in the GottaBeMobile.com Forums lets us know that mobile phone maker HTC might be getting into the Ultra-Mobile PC market. This would certainly be an interesting development. HTC is quietly huge in mobile cellphones (producing phones branded by others) and if they could leverage some of that strength into the market [...]
