Word out of UMPCPortal is that Viliv, one of the few (possibly only) computer makers dedicated to the small Windows-based UMPC and MID form factors may be shutting down.
Viliv was at CES and in addition to showing off two Android slates, the company also demoed the X70 Windows 7 tablet, which is similar in spec to the Android models in offering a thin, attractive design and long battery life in between recharges. Viliv is boasting the X70 as the thinnest and lightest Windows-based tablet system in the world.
Unlike some other slates, such as the ASUS MeMO and the HP Slate 500, this Windows slate doesn’t offer a digitizer and will rely purely on its capacitive touchscreen and buttons to interact with Windows 7.
Viliv was showing off its wares at the Consumer Electronics Show and we had some time with the Android-based tablets, which the company is boasting as having the longest battery life on an Android slate device. There will be two models, the X7 and X10, both of which offer similar specs and experiences except the X10 will come with a larger display. Viliv says that it is in talks with U.S. carrier Sprint to potentially deliver a carrier-subsidized version of the Viliv X7 to the U.S. market, which is a big win for the company if that pans out; despite making great hardware, Viliv still has a relatively small presence in the States outside of the tech community for its MID, UMPC, and [...]

Pocketables has a thorough review of the impressively small Viliv N5 running Windows 7. It’s a clamshell device sporting a touchscreen, appropriately sized keyboard, and Intel Atom processor, and Jenn Lee gives it very high marks on usability.
