Talk about Going Mobile: Travel the Country for 1 Year with Only $180

Published

This is a fascinating post on many levels. On one level, this is an entry into the HP Magic Giveaway. It was submitted to Chris Pirillo’s site. (Don’t forget you can enter here at GBM as well.) From a mobile tech and social media perspective it is just awesome and full of adventure.

Amy Bugbee and her husband Shane set out to travel the USA for one year with only $180 in their pocket, a dog and a turtle in the back seat of their car, one laptop computer, an HD video camera, and a donated digital recorder. The idea was they would use their wits and the technology to find work as they traveled the country. They also carried gear for baking. The idea was they were going to chronicle their trip and some thoughts of individuals they met across the country. Their adventure was trying at times but also adventurous and as they say, that kind of trip isn’t for everyone.

Certainly worth a read and look to see how they managed to make their plan work. Here’s one of their videos.

It sounds like something to go on the travel or discovery channel. I don’t want to imagine some of the stressed these two, three if you count the turtle, went through.

I have a cousin who took off in the late 70’s with about $500 and a goal of working his way around the world. He hitchhiked across the country and got jobs on a ship to take him to Europe, and used the youth hostels and trains to travel there. Got from Spain to Morocco on a ferry, and traveled Africa for several months, and worked his passage to Australia on a ship again. After six months working in Australia. He planned to work there and get a plane ticket home, but after six months, he could see that he wasn’t accumulating any money, so his parents finally wired him the money to get back to Colorado. It would have been nice to have internet on that trip. We could have communicated with him, instead of wondering if he was alive between sparse letters to his mom. Craigslist might have helped him get more odd jobs to earn his way home.

Whenever you are going on a long trip, never, ever, forget to take a turtle!

Hey thank you for posting about this! We really appreciate it.
Yes, the dog and the turtle had a great time, Cheyenne waded in two oceans, stood atop mountains, and ran in the desert, and Myrtle the turtle swam in dozens of bathtubs, a horse trough, and even a stream in Texas!
It was not easy, and it would take a week just to give the cliff notes from the journey, but it was the best experience of my life.
    Thanks again,
    Amy
