The Division Beta Release Gets New End Date

Video game developer Ubisoft is having a hard time fitting everyone into the The Division Beta release that it’d planned to end early this morning. In response to high demand, the company is extending the testing period for the upcoming online role-playing game by another day.

Ubisoft revealed it was extending The Division Beta late yesterday on social networking website Twitter and its own forum. Set in New York City, The Division lets players create their own member of SHD, a government organization trying to protect what’s left of the city after a virus ravages the area. Besides hording resources, players are able to team up with their friends and head into the Dark Zone, a multiplayer area with all the best gear and power-ups. It’s the online mechanics that Ubisoft is hoping to test out thoroughly with The Division Beta release.

According to that aforementioned forum post, The Division Beta release will now run until tomorrow, January 2nd. “Servers will remain open until Tuesday, February 2nd, 12pm CET | 6 am EST | 3 am PST,” the company says. Extending the amount of time users have to try the game was a byproduct of registration issues early on, it seems. “Over the last few days, we’ve seen an incredible amount of excitement for the game, leading to many of you registering on the waitlist for a chance to join our Closed Beta.” Ubisoft alerted users who’d signed up on that registration list early in the weekend that they weren’t able to guarantee spots for everyone – even if they’d pre-ordered the game.

“Early today, we announced that we were now inviting as many players as possible from the waitlist, in addition to those who had guaranteed pre-order access,” the company says.

Ubisoft opened a waitlist for those trying to get into The Division Beta release in mid-January. The list was necessary because the developer made it clear that the only way to absolutely make it into the game’s test was to pre-order outright through the Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, Steam or a local games retailer. Because the company is sending out codes on a first come, first serve basis, registering on that list now for guaranteed access isn’t necessarily a good idea.

There’s a special Twitch stream running for the entire length of The Division Beta release. It’s perfect for those who want a detailed look at the game before the pre-order, but don’t have time to download the beta themselves or are away from their console. The studio has someone talking about the game and its mechanics until the beta release ends on Tuesday morning.

The official release date for The Division is March 8th. None of the character progression from the beta release is transferring over to the final version of the game. That being said, users will get access to a special thank you item of some sort, according to Ubisoft.

All told, The Division Beta release seems to have been a success. The game was one of the most watched titles this weekend on Twitch. It was all that most gamers could talk about in dedicated Xbox, PC and PS4 gaming forums too. Ubisoft being forced to extend the beta release past its original end date certainly isn’t a bad sign either.

There are three versions of The Division available for pre-order ahead of release. A standard copy of the game costs $59.99. It includes special hazmat gear for player’s character. The Division Gold Edition costs $99.99 and includes the Hazmat Gear as well. Also included is access to all three large updates that Ubisoft has planned for the game’s first year. Finally, there’s The Division Collector’s Edition. This version includes a poster, artbook, armband, watch and the game’s season pass content for $159.99. All three of these versions are available for Xbox One, PS4 and PC gamers at GameStop.

The Division won’t get a release for the Xbox 360 or PS3.

Update: The Division is available now on Xbox One, Windows PCs and PS4. Gotta Be Mobile has a breakdown of which version of the game you should purchase here.
