The Viewsonic G 10 Inch Tablet Reviewed Found Lacking

Published

on

Laptop Mag got their hands on the Viewsonic G 10 inch Tablet and has posted up one of their usual thorough reviews. Suffice it to say they weren’t too enthusiastic about the Viewsonic G. Running on the Nvidia Tegra v2 platform the G is running Android 2.2 and offers the usual array of Tablet/Slate functionality that we see in the current generation of Android Tablets that aren’t running an OS tailored for Tablets and Slates.

From the sound of things Viewsonic added a UI layer on top of Android 2.2, called Tap N Tap and from the looks of the review that led to poor performance issues on this model. The reviewer got great battery life (11 hours) but it doesn’t offer the usual array of Google Apps or access to the Marketplace, so if you’re looking for that functionality, this isn’t the Tablet/Slate for you. They do offer a shortcut to Handango. Call me crazy, but isn’t one of the points of these Android devices to have access to the Android Marketplace?

Oh, well. Check out the full review here.

The Viewsonic G Tablet can be hacked in about 10 minutes. The support from the modding community is outstanding on this device. After it is hacked, it runs insanely fast, has full Flash and full Android market. The hardware is amazing for the price. If you can unzip files and know how to hold down two buttons at the same time, you should be good to go.

I purchased the G Tablet but have not opened it in search of a better tablet. What do you mean by “hacked in” nd unsip what files?

This has everything you will need. He has already written a pretty good guide on how to do it. The forums are very helpful.

Basically you want to install ClockWork Mod .8. (Your first zip file) Create a backup of your current system in the recovery mode if you want to restore it later for some reason. Install TnT Lite 2.2. (Your second zip file). Then do the Android Market hack (https://droidpirate.com/2010/12/02/how-to-viewsonic-g-tablet-full-market-access/). Finally, install Flash 10.1. (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9476506&postcount=26) And now you have a bad ass tablet. You should also download and install LauncherPro and HomeSwitcher from the Market. This allows you to do 10×10 icon grids so you don’t up with a ton of wasted space and widgets actually look right. If you donate, you can get a serial code so you can resize widgets. That’s really handy if you want to make your widgets look just right. PowerAmp works really well with the tablet form factor. And Rock Player will let you play a bunch of different movie file formats. I would also find a live wallpaper that you like since they look a lot better than a static wallpaper. Currently the wallpaper isn’t 1:1 pixel mapping so it looks blurry. The only thing that sucks is the viewing angles. But if you can get over that (it bothered me for the first couple days only) then it is just awesome. It is FAST and the battery life is excellent.

It has no phone functionality at all. It is a Wi-Fi only tablet.

If you have an Android phone you can get all of the apps. Download to your phone, backup your apps, copy to computer, then download to tablet. Very easy only takes a couple of minutes.

This machine kick into overdrive other the help of xda developers! And I didn’t know what I was doing trying to root the system but it’s as simple as reading directions and holding down 2 buttons. Like the last comment said, the whole thing takes about 10 minutes.
