Three Samsung Galaxy S Gingerbread update expected in ‘next couple of weeks’

United Kingdom based service provider Three has revealed that it expects to push out Gingerbread to its Samsung Galaxy S devices sometime in the ‘next couple of weeks.’

Samsung Galaxy S

The tweet, first reported by Android Central, states that although the carrier expects it to be coming sometime in the near future, it cannot confirm an exact release date for the roll out to start. In fact, other than that confirmation, there is little else to go on.If true, this would make Three’s Galaxy S device among the first smartphones not called Nexus to receive Gingerbread.

U.S. owners of Verizon’s Galaxy S device, the Samsung Fascinate, will likely greet this news with pitchforks raised as Big Red has still yet to roll out Froyo and has not given owners any sort of update on when to expect it.

As for other U.S. devices, Gingerbread has already leaked out for the Motorola Droid 2 and the Motorola Droid X with an official update for the Droid X said to be arriving in the near future. The HTC ThunderBolt and the original Droid Incredible are also expected to get Gingerbread sometime in Q2.

Negative. Froyo is not yet out, in official capacity, for the Fascinate. Look for a post from me on that later today or tomorrow.

    Robbaddoo,

It’s increasingly unlikely that Verizon will ever officially release Froyo for the Fascinate, and given the length of the delay (nearly 9 months now with zero new information whatsoever from Verizon), it’s likely that the issue is contractual, not technical. Other than an entire development team simultaneously up and quitting, it is categorically absurd to believe that a firmware port would take 9 months.

It seems likely that the issue revolved around Verizon’s contract with Microsoft for the exclusive inclusion of Bing. If they were to release Froyo with Bing included, they’d be enraging Fascinate owners, particularly after announcing that Froyo would -not- exclusively use Bing as a search engine. However, if they were to release a de-Binged Froyo before their contractual agreement with Microsoft were up, they’d be liable for violating that agreement.

The result is 9 months of “we’re working on it” and nothing more.

Further, it’s likely that the leaked versions of Froyo were a means to assuage the loudest, most technically savvy Fascinate owners until the whole thing blows over. If Fascinate owners want Froyo, they’re going to have to use a leaked version — there’s no indication whatsoever that there will ever be an ota release.

Most troublesome is the fact that many thousands of people purchased the Fascinate and entered into contractual agreements with Verizon with the implicit understanding that Froyo would be “coming soon” and the explicit understanding that “Froyo will be released no later than the end of the year.” (2010)

That would be nothing more than bad business if it weren’t for the fact that this was advertised as a means to entice people to purchase the product as well as to entice consumers to enter into a contract. That’s not just bad business — that’s fraud. It’s class action lawsuit material, and people are exploring that option.

I would take Froyo on my Fascinate with Bing gladly if it meant getting an OTA update with it. At this point I think most users that haven’t already switched to third party ROMs would. I know for me I don’t like the idea of switching to a third party ROM even though I’m knowledgeable about it technically, I just don’t like further fragmenting my device from the mainstream.

It really is a shame that Verizon out of all the Carriers still has not released Froyo officially for the Samsung Fascinate. As a Fascinate owner, I’m pretty upset but what can I say? It is the only Galaxy S phone without Froyo. That said, Verizon should be ashamed of themselves for being the largest carrier and the sole carrier without froyo on their Galaxy S phone #froyogate #neveragain

y’all are completely crazy, or wherever you live just don’t get updates or something…i only bought my Fascinate in February 2011.  installed battery, turned it on, activated it, it spent the next hour updating elair to froyo completely on it’s own OTA.  i was expecting to have to do it manually, my coworker had to do it manually on his AT&T (captivate), and was telling me he’d help if i needed it, but i swear to god, just turned the thing on and it updated itself.

i live in missouri by the way.
