The Samsung Galaxy S3 may be closing in on its second birthday but the device remains on shelves as an extremely cheap, but solid smartphone option for those that don’t want to break the bank. And while the Galaxy S3 is a good budget option, we believe that there are some devices that consumers should take a look at before settling on the Galaxy S3.

In May of 2012, Samsung took the stage at an Unpacked event in London, England and announced the Samsung Galaxy S3, a device that replaced the Galaxy S2 as the company’s flagship. The Samsung Galaxy S3 was a massive overhaul and included a redesign, a brand new 720 HD display, improved camera, larger battery, the company’s TouchWiz UX, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and a whole lot more.

Backed by an impressive ad campaign, the Samsung Galaxy S3 went on to sell tens of millions of times around the globe. And while it may not be the flagship that it used to be, it remains an option thanks to a budget price tag, hardware that is still suitable for many users, and software that has been regularly updated throughout its life span.

The Samsung Galaxy S3, due to its age, is being given away for free on-contract. It should also be pretty cheap off-contract as well. So, it hasn’t be surprising to see friends, family and readers looking into the relic.

Before buying the Samsung Galaxy S3, there are some smartphones that we think buyers must consider for various reasons. In particular, we think there are five devices that consumers must take a look at before buying into Samsung’s former flagship.

Keep in mind, our list may differ from yours but these are the devices that Gotta Be Mobile editors have selected for recognition this month. We feel like they deliver the best, all-around package at the moment. This list will change from month to month as rumored devices get closer to announcement and announced devices get released.

One of the first smartphones that consumers should consider before buying the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the Samsung Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S4, like the Galaxy S3, is an extremely affordable smartphone option that has gotten even more affordable after the Galaxy S5's arrival.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 replaced the Galaxy S3 as the company's top option in April of last year and it did so with a number of upgrades over the Galaxy S3. The Galaxy S4 comes equipped with an improved camera, processor, design, display, and software. Basically, it's better in just about every single way.

The Galaxy S4 also sets consumers up well for the future. While the Galaxy S3 will likely stop at Android 4.4 KitKat, the Galaxy S4 should get updates into 2015.

“and software that has been regularly updated throughout its life span” … but it hasn’t been. The last update (4.3) was full of bugs and, 6 months later, we peasants who bought our S3s in 2012 still aren’t getting update 4.4. Samsung/Google seem to have a contemptuous attitude toward their customers.
