TreeGloo Nexus 7 Case Review

Published

on

The Nexus 7 lends itself well to moleskin style cases like the TreeGloo Nexus 7 case.

This handmade case combines a soft faux-leather, wood and book cloth to offer a premium case experience not found at Amazon or on Best Buy shelves.

TreeGloo boasts a low waste hand-made design process which uses solid hardwoods, traditional woodworking techniques and a hand staining process.

This style of case is not unique to TreeGloo or the Nexus 7, but the TreeGloo Nexus 7 case does a lot of things right.

The TreeGloo case starts at $34.95 with a variety of options and color choices. The TreeGloo Nexus 7 case reviewed features an ebony frame, orange book cloth liner and the kinetic latch which turns the case into a stand. These options increase the cost to $64.95.

TreeGloo Nexus 7 Case Review - open

Moleskin or book-style cases like the TreeGloo Nexus 7 case are great for small tablets.

The TreeGloo Nexus 7 case features great build quality, and feels great. The faux-leather finish is soft, and doesn’t have the cheap feel which some fake leather finishes do. The leather wraps around the corners in a neat manner, where it is met with the cloth or paper liner.

There is a distinct spine to the case, which stays stiff when folding the front cover behind. When placed on a table with the cover folded behind, the Nexus 7 is in a suitable position for typing.

TreeGloo Nexus 7 Case Review - folded back

WHen folded back the latch keeps the cover in place or sits to teh front for typing.

The front cover feels solid and only flexes with significant force. So long as you don’t try to bend the cover it should hold up well over time. The front cover includes a magnet to wake and sleep the Nexus 7 automatically. This is a nice touch, especially due to the recessed power button.

TreeGloo Nexus 7 Case Review - buttons

Access to the power and volume buttons.

The case includes a cutout on the right side for access to the power and volume buttons. Thanks to the angle of the opening it is easy to slide a finger in and hit the buttons.

The interior of the case comes with a number of options, including the orange book cloth on our review unit. This cloth is a nice touch and feels nicer than the paper used in some cases. It’s up to you whether this $10 upgrade is worth the price since it ads no functionality.

TreeGloo Nexus 7 Case Review - landscape dock

The Kinetic Latch holds the case in landscape mode.

I highly recommend upgrading to the Kinetic Latch. This $15 option adds a magnet latch that flips back to hold the case open and pulls out to keep the case propped up in landscape mode. Users who plan to watch movies, participate in Google Hangouts or use a bluetooth keyboard with the Nexus 7 will love this option. The landscape mode is sturdy enough to tap and interact with the Nexus 7, but it will move slightly on smooth surfaces.

Four small pieces of rubber in the corners of the frame keep the Nexus 7 in place. When seated properly the Nexus 7 is flush with the hardwood case. I can turn the case over and shake it upside down without the Nexus 7 falling out.

TreeGlooNexus 7 Case rubber

Rubber pieces in each corner hold the Nexus 7 firmly in place.

The TreeGloo Nexus 7 case is one of my favorite cases, and the notebook style fits the small size of the Nexus 7 better than larger tablets. While in the case the Nexus 7’s size is roughly twice as thick, but it’s an adequate trade off for the protection, looks and usefulness of the TreeGloo case with a Kinetic Latch.

Read: Best Nexus 7 Cases & Covers

The TreeGloo Nexus 7 case is a much better deal than the official Nexus 7 case. The case retails for $34.95 and ships in 5-10 days. There are mulitple wood options, 10 outer color choices and 19 liner color options. The classic liner option includes a choice of 8 different maps instead of a solid cover.

I think it’s worth mentioning that if people want different options, like soft cloth interior, the kinetic latch, different color wood, etc…that $34.95 price doubles. The kinetic latch is $15. Any thing you change about the $34.95 starter case adds to the price. I’ve also read treegloo customer service is awful. I’ve also read the quality of these cases are not all that great.

I ordered one of these cases after seeing posts about them on XDA, and received it on Friday. It’s wonderful! Quality is outstanding and customer service has made me feel like a rock star. They answered emails as late as 2AM their time, and have answered every email I’ve sent in an hour or less. Jen has been absolutely incredible!

There are lots of threads trying to discredit this product, and I’m wondering if they are spawned by other companies who simply can’t produce this type of quality and service.

That would make sense Doug….it probably is another company. I’m glad your experience was a good one and thank you for sharing it. The reviews I was reading definitely didn’t make me want to give this case a shot.

I’m inclined to believe it is a competitor leaving poor remarks about the customer service. I haven’t received my case yet, but I’ve had interactions with Treegloo on their Facebook page which have been nothing short of stellar. Looking forward to seeing the product in person.

I disagree with regards to the customer service. I order my case August 8th and have heard nothing from them, I have sent multiple emails and called the customer service number. No one answered, I have left a voicemail and they have failed to return my call. I can’t speak to the quality of my product because I have not received it. I’m on the verge of cancelling and contacting the Better Business Bureau.

I m having the same experience. Did you ever get your case? I ordered on September 20 and still have not received it. I have had two ship dates emailed to me only to have them both com and go. I have never seen such horrible customer service.

I’ve only seen a few negative reviews on different forums, and they’re all by the same person. It is worth noting, however, that they do have a rating of F by the Better Business Bureau. Everything I’ve seen about these cases and heard from personal opinion has been very positive, though, and I would have no concerns about picking one up.

I would be interested in seeing the author review cases by Portenzo and Dodocase, who offer a very similar style also customizable and built with premium materials and workmanship.

I noticed the reviewer didn’t mention whether the case muffled the speakers or if there’s a cut out on the back. Does anyone have any experience with this?

    • Marko

      08/09/2012 at 3:03 pm

      From their site:

Is there a cutout for the speaker on the back of the Nexus 7?

Yes. We put a lot of R&D into our case designs, and making sure the speaker worked well was a high priority. The speaker aligns with the bottom ledge of the frame, which helps direct the sound toward the user through the bottom port. It actually sounds better in the frame than when it’s sitting on its own.

    WHAT DOES THE CASE WEIGH?

  6. robert

    08/18/2012 at 10:22 am

The site says the case weighs about 4-6 oz. and that seems accurate. I got mine yesterday after some waiting and have to say it’s like a work of art. Totally worth the wait as many people have said. The pictures in this review and spot on

Is it me or does this thing eliminate that nice “stream lined” look that the Nexus 7 set out to achieve?

    • lolo

      08/18/2012 at 2:28 pm

I agree. I don’t like the look. I bought a tpu case and it looks great. Very simple and doesn’t cover up the beauty of the N7. I also bought a blurex leather case that has no leather around the screen, just 6 leather “clips” on the corners. It also is a stand. I for one don’t want to cover up this beautiful gadget. To each their own.

  8. robert

    08/18/2012 at 10:59 pm

To each his own indeed. However, as a partner in an architecture firm I prefer not to carry around a generic case but rather one that looks like a professional portfolio. I think the treegloo is great looking and exudes a hand-tailored quality that mass produced cases simply can’t touch.

I have to agree with those experiencing very bad service. I ordered my case on 20 July. It is now 1 September and still no sign of shipment. I have contacted them by email twice, and while they have responded it has always been “it will be sent next week”. They make no effort to keep customers updated on late delivery of orders – you have to chase them. One more try and I will be cancelling my order. That’s a pity because the case and the website look professional. Sadly service is not.

    09/02/2012 at 10:30 am

Got my treegloo a few days ago and can say that I can see why there is a wait for these cases. The attention to detail and build quality are second to none.

I found the responses to any email to be very professional and fast. I don’t expect a small company to keep me up to date on every step but being handmade and affordable I was fine with waiting and it was completely worth it.

    • mrcelery

      09/02/2012 at 2:37 pm

I agree that for a hand made quality product it is worth a longer wait. A bit like a quality restaurant v McDonalds fast food. What I do object to is false advertising. I would be perfectly happy for them to advertise that it may take 1-2 months to build a quality case, or simply put on their website blog that with the launch of the Nexus 7 they are running late due to extra orders. But promising an unachievable 1-2 weeks delivery is outright lying. And then to string customers along by saying it will be “next week” when they must know that also is a lie just adds to the bad service. Is it so hard to be honest these days?

      • Wilson

        09/12/2012 at 8:18 am

Perfectly true,.. i still waiting mine since i ordered it at 1 month ago.
their support do reply email but always can’t meet what they promise, keep delaying.
why don’t they let China factory man make the case, lol

  12. mrcelery

    09/18/2012 at 9:21 pm

As previously commented, it’s a long wait to get the case. In my situation the case finally arrived today, so a day short of two months since ordering. It arrived a few days before I take my Nexus 7 on an overseas holiday, so I’ve very relieved it got to me in time. It was well packed, and the case is certainly great quality. If you are prepared for a long wait, it is certainly a good product. Just wish that they hadn’t raised my stress levels with unrealistic delivery promises.

The day after your review I ordered and paid by Visa . After a month I was informed it “was too hot in Texas” and the curing process was affected. I was promised the following week. It is now coming up to 8 weeks and my order has still yet to leave the factory! Really was use are all the fine words and claims of fine craftsmanship if company can’t meet delivery dates?

    09/23/2012 at 10:49 am

Worth the wait, got mine 2 days ago and like anyone I know who has gotten theirs (some office mates) it’s awesome. The wait can be long for some (a few friends got theirs in 2 weeks mine was almost 5) but the quality is far beyond what any of us expected.

I got the black wood finish which looks more expensive than what I paid for. The case gets as much attention as my new iPhone and then even more when people realize it holds a tablet.

    ^^ Not the full story…

I’m on their Google plus page and saw someone with the same name spamming insults and other people. If you were a customer in a store I’m sure they would ask you leave as well.

Others, including myself, waited and got our cases and agree it’s a good product.

      Good for you Charlie.
If U think I’ve indulged in libel or slander please let me know (As Treegloo certainty would if they “knew” (not felt) my comments were unfair) but please don’t you insinuate un-substantiated spamming and then leave it hanging. With more than 20 years as a journalist and winner of multiple awards (George Foster Peabody (s), Columbia DuPont etc.)The commendations are only suggest to you I am not a “proper Charlie” & I know of what I speak. I report what happened and commented on behaviour. If Treegloo can’t stand the heat they should get out of the wood curing business.

P.S. to the above post ^^^ I have from Treegloo numerous (s) emails (s) with promises (s)
to deliver next week. What else can one say but : they TREEGOO is (&was) “economical with the truth”!

  18. Charles

    09/24/2012 at 11:45 am

Regardless of the situation, your conduct is yours and yours alone. You were badgering a group of people on Google + and then the company decided not to deal with you.

Based on the interactions I have seen I can only assume your emails to treegloo were far less “cordial.”

In the end, it is just a case, not a kidney.

We both have our opinions, however, holding the product I can say it’s a nice piece of work (much like everyone who has one). I believe they should continue making quality items but brush up on their ship times.

  19. Fred Kennedy

    Charle’s view is so : “I’m alright Jack” — I’ve got mine…
Charlie, when you AssUMe You make an ASS out of U — not ME.
You have not seen my emails to them which unlike your “assumption” I assure you were extremely polite as I was under the mistaken belief I was dealing with someone honest and all I wanted that they complete their part of the bargain.
Pathetic History 100 effort Charles to build a straw man — You’re right its not a kidney its a just a case that was “reviewed here” (this is obviously not the Health and Human Rights Journal) — which the customer paid for under promise (s) broken continually by the seller. That’s it!
Like others before me ^^^ (see above review ) I complained here on this review and elsewhere about non-delivery after nearly 8 weeks. A small minded reaction by a small time company in a small time town unable to meet production delivery dates was the result. I find it condescending & dismissive with your conclusion that they should “brush up on their ship times”.
As dictated by Treegloo I’m history. Posted period. I’m outta here.
    Caveat emptor!

8/08 was ~just about 6 weeks ago not 8 as you initially claimed.

      09/24/2012 at 4:14 pm

“…(and everyone else’s) is that the case is nice and worth the wait.”
Not true — unhappy customer complaints about their Treegloo cases. (available on-line with Google)

“Again, we both have our opinions”… what does that mean Charlie?
You started the “defense of Treegloo late delivery ”

“8/08 was ~just about 6 weeks ago not 8 as you initially claimed”– the last resort of the
      beaten — the bean counter.
Treegloo started with two weeks delivery …. then three, then four, then five, then six —
o.k. your right that sounds like a responsible way for a company to treat it’s customers.

I just stated my opinion that you didn’t play well with others and that is why your order got cancelled.

I order a case on July 26 and still have not received it. I emailed back in mid August and they said were having production issues but will be shipping in about 2 weeks. Well that never happen and again sent several emails asking for update on status with them say were checking into it. Finally when I sent one saying I just want a refund so I can buy from another company I get one saying it supposedly going to be here this week, I guess I’ll see. Even if I do receive the case this week I will never by a product from them again. Their staff was polite but I can’t stand getting the run around

  24. Fred Kennedy

    09/26/2012 at 11:00 am

Precisely my experiences xero ! Just don’t complain too loudly or they will cancel your order and tell you they are returning your money.

I wonder how long before my “refund” makes it to my credit card?
They had my”deposit” just short of two months….

Yesterday I found & purchased a cover (there are a LOTof alternatives) and am really pleased as I realize now Treegloo was indeed a tad pretentious and certainly overpriced considering the amount of grief generated.
Perhaps in light of Treegloo being so “economical with the truth” with so many customers reviewers could take the time “re-evaluate” the product or “pull” the original reviews. I know this review by Josh Smith ^^^^ was instrumental in my decision to buy — but never to receive my purchase.

It took about 5 weeks but I finally got my TreeGloo cases! I am very pleased with my beautiful case, and so is my husband.

I ordered my case three months ago and still have not received it. Every time I emailed them their response was quick and polite but the case always seemed to be a couple of days away from shipping. They sent me a tracking number and said the case was shipped but it didn’t reach the sorting facility until three weeks later. I understand that a lot of work goes into the cases and they are bogged down, but the dishonestly is just too much. Unless your willing to wait several months it’s just not worth it.

At this point I think I’d be happier if they did decide not to do business with me and give me my money back. I ordered mine on Oct. 19 and have been getting exactly the same run-around. I am still waiting for the tracking information I was supposed to get today and surprise! No tracking information. This isn’t a custom furniture company, for heaven’s sake! My Oberon Designs cover cost more than what I paid for this and it didn’t take this long to get here.

I placed an order for a Nexus 7 case on October the 8th. On October 24th I inquired about the status of the order and was told that I could expect my order to be shipped around the first week of November. I inquired again on November 14th and was told that due to Hurricane Sandy there were some delays and the order would most likely ship before the end of November, which is completely understandable.
On December 6th I sent another email to check on the status of the order, and received no response. I sent another email on the 20th of December and have not yet received a response to that either. I did notice that the auto-response states ‘all orders will be delivered by Christmas’, but I still haven’t heard anything, I’m assumed this was no longer the case. I was finally responded to on January 1st apologizing for the delay and saying it would be shipped on the 11th of January. As of yet I have received no shipping confirmation.

      01/14/2013 at 6:39 am

Delays due to Hurricane Sandy? That’s interesting since this company is located in Texas. I suppose it’s possible some of their supply outlets are on the East coast. I can tell you that after several e-mails, and after finally threatening to go to the Better Business Bureau, I did receive my cover this past Saturday. It is a very nice cover, although by no means is it worth that kind of time. I would suggest you keep e-mailing them because they do respond. If you finally decide to ask for a refund and get it, check out the Portenza covers. They have gotten fantastic reviews and I haven’t seen the customer service complaints that Treegloo has gotten. I suspect that Treegloo is a very small company overwhelmed by orders and the reason I say this is because most companies that don’t give a rat’s rear end don’t go out of their way to respond to inquiries the way this one has. I’m not saying this excuses them, but it may explain the delays.

Well, I just had a long email exchange with Treegloo customer support and my experience is that their support is extremely responsive and helpful. I received same-day responses to every question.

The website currently states that there is up to a 21 *business day* delay on production of orders. (About a month and I ordered mine after the holiday rush) This is obviously a small company that has been overwhelmed by an unexpected volume of orders for a quality product. If you’re going to buy a handmade custom item, you have to wait in line and let them make cases for everyone who ordered before you.

If you want a case sent next day air, order a pre-fab case from Amazon. Be patient and let them make a quality product. I for one am glad that they’re not rushing the manufacture of my case.

And before any of the usual objections: I’m only a customer and not affiliated with Treegloo in any way other than being a customer.

    • Steve

      01/24/2013 at 3:38 pm

To further my story above. On the 18th of January I inquired about the shipping date I was given and missed (11th of January). 7 days later I received a response.

“My apologies for leaving you without a specific ship date at this time. If the order has not been shipped between January 30th and February 15th, we will automatically issue a refund for your order, unless otherwise specified.” – Jonathan R. Production Manager.

Firstly this doesn’t address my concern at all. The problem is not that I haven’t received a shipping date. I’ve been given 4.

I’m quite happy to wait for a quality product. This is shown by the fact that I have been waiting 3 and a half months for one that was promised to be shipped in 21 days. Unless Treegloo suddenly delivers, I will have sent them my money, only for them to hold on to it for over 4 months and send it back to me.

In no way is this a defensible way of conducting business.

Production delays are completely understandable. Especially for a smaller company. But stringing people along with several missed shipping dates, never initiating contact, only ever replying and all the while ,presumably, still taking fresh orders is definitely not acceptable.

    • Anne OBrien

      01/24/2013 at 3:45 pm

Kris, I agree that making a quality product does take time and effort and I have thought from the start that this is a small company that is overwhelmed with orders, especially after receiving very positive online reviews. However, if you are going to state a specific number of days on your website for order production, it doesn’t help your business when that delay stretches into months. I ordered my cover on October 19 and only received it two weeks ago. A company cannot stay in business with that kind of service. No product is worth it, especially when there are other companies that can provide the same kind of quality and stick to their time tables. I like my cover very much, but I would not be able to recommend Treegloo to any of my friends simply their service doesn’t match the quality of their product. It’s a shame because every time I e -mailed them I always got a response, but by the time I received my order I felt like I was only getting excuses.

    TREEGLOO Company:

Although there are many negative reviews and thoughts on Treegloo all over the internet I decided to give them a chance because of how they seem to be a great environmentally friendly company. I ordered a Nexus 7 case. I understood that these are handmade and will take a little extra time to be completed.

Upon ordering the case I never received a tracking or order number and only received a receipt for the $89.00 that I was spending. Some time went by without hearing anything from the company. I emailed to check on the status and only received a generic it will take time sometimes up to 21 business days. Never a word about my order specifically or even a question to make it seem as if they looked up my order.

Upon the eve of the 21st business day I sent an email to the company again trying to check the status of my order. And again I received a generic standard response saying it’s being worked on. At the end of that day I sent another email saying that I thought it fair to give them that day to get back to me before I discussed these issues online with the public. Magically a couple hours after that email i received a response saying it takes 24-48 hours to respond to emails, which was odd because this response was only hours after voicing my displeasure with the company. The response said because of my complaints they were cancelling my order and refunding my money. At this moment there money has not shown up in my bank account, so I am anxiously awaiting confirmation that this terrible company did in fact refund my money.

Handmade products take time to create, but customer service should be immediate. The way this company ignores its customers and the terrible way they respond to a complaint is reprehensible. I would never give this company a second chance nor would I ever allow any one I know or even a stranger to even consider doing business with this company. Again, I think their idea of helping the environment is fantastic but I wish that goal could be done by other companies. This must be why there are 29 active complaints on the BBB regarding Treegloo.

I ordered mine on 18 Dec 2012. It’s going on 9 weeks now without delivery. My correspondence with them has been a hoot.

I ordered mine in early December and it stated on their site that it will ship by the Christmas. I emailed for a status and was told that it would be shipped in a couple days. Waited 2 weeks near the end of January and still no notification. I emailed again and the person said it was a miscommunication and will be shipping it out by end of Friday. I waited a week after and still no notification. They gave me the runaround 3 times so I asked for a refund. I was willing to wait, but to be lied to 3 times shows no integrity and respect. Shame on them (Treegloo). I have the email string to prove it, if in case they think that I’m just ranting.

I recommend Portenzo (https://shop.portenzo.com/nexus…. Also hand crafted and you get it within 2 weeks.

I ended up cancelling my order. I put an order in with Portenzo and got the case two weeks later.

I’d like to echo the others here who’ve paid money in good faith and have not received their product. Communication from Treegloo varies between sporadic and nonexistent. My order was placed in early January 2013 and now, in late March, I am seeking a refund. In an interesting side note, while they cannot be bothered replying to customer emails, when critical comments are left on their Facebook page they are deleted and the user blocked within hours. Avoid this company at all costs.

It would be nice (and responsible) to see editor amend his review to reflect the overwhelming response from ripped off customers.

    Another in a long line of disgruntled customers, I have waited thee months for some sign of a case and all I have received are emails giving the illusion that they are even trying to help me out, the latest was four days ago;

Echoing all the other negative posts above. I ordered my Nexus 7 case in January, and have only received emails shining me on about it coming. Here is a link to Houston’s BBB report regarding Treegloo..big surprise they got an “F” https://www.bbb.org/houston/business-reviews/computers-supplies-and-parts/treegloo-in-sugar-land-tx-90021240
