Twitter Home Screen for Android Could Take on Facebook Home

A home screen powered by Twitter could be in Android’s future, that’s the gist of what Twitter executives told AllThingsD during yesterday’s sessions at the publication’s Dive Into Mobile conference.

When asked if Twitter would also be creating its own Android homescreen replacement to allow users to see Tweets at a glance, Michael Sippey, Twitter’s Vice President of product responded, “There are a lot of things we’re looking at on Android, and across all of our applications, to make it easier to discover tweets.”

According to Sippey, he would like to see some sort of “Tweets [on the home/lock screen], so we’ll see how it goes”

Earlier in that conversation, Sippey explained that the development teams he lead at Twitter aim for fast and frequent updates to its native applications just as Facebook does, and that the company is focused on trying to deliver evolved versions of the clients quickly –meaning that company is constantly examining and trying out new ways to bring Twitter to users.

Facebook Home made its debut this past week and allows users to download the app on compatible Android devices and have it replace the homescreen and lockscreen of their Android device with versions tailored for addicts of Facebook. Whenever any of the user’s friend’s post status updates the user is almost immediately able to see them without ever having opened the Facebook’s traditional application nor navigate to Facebook in a web browser.

Facebook also introduces Chat Heads, a way for users to quickly and easily send and receive messages from Facebook or traditional SMS messages. Once a message is sent, Facebook Home users are immediately greeted by a floating bubble-shaped profile picture of the sender, and their message. Facebook Home also becomes the way users will launch applications, though it does so with the understanding that users will be more focused on using its Facebook’s service and only makes other applications available in a screen two or so layers into the new launcher.

Currently, Facebook Home is only available on the HTC One X, the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S4, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Facebook does have plans to bring Facebook Home to more users as time passes. Facebook Home also comes preinstalled on the HTC First, a phone Facebook designed in partnership with HTC, to act as Facebook Home’s showcase device.
