In an announcement today, U.S. Cellular has revealed that it will providing 4G LTE coverage to 3,600 cities and towns in urban and rural areas  across the United States. That massive expansion will be taking place sometime during the middle of 2012 and figures into the carrier’s plans to have over half of its customer base covered in 4G LTE by the end of 2012.

In addition to its roll out plans, U.S. Cellular has announced that it now carries the Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot, a device aimed that those that don’t want or need a 4G LTE smartphone or tablet, but still want to pull down those speeds on another device while on-the-go.

The device will join the two 4G LTE devices that the carrier currently has available in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Samsung Galaxy S Aviator smartphone.

The additional markets that will be arriving later this year include select cities in Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

And while the carrier hasn’t offered up every specific city, it has listed off a few which include Rockford and Peoria, Ill.; Columbia and Jefferson City, Mo.; Manchester, N.H.; Wilmington and Jacksonville, N.C.; Tulsa, Okla.; Medford, Ore.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Roanoke and Lynchburg, Va.; Yakima and the Tri-Cities, Wash.; Morgantown, W. Va. and LaCrosse and Beloit, Wis.

Keep in mind, U.S. Cellular is a regional carrier and it’s 4G LTE network won’t cover the entire country. However, if you are covered, you’ll not only be presented with an alternative to the networks of AT&T, Sprint and Verizon but you’ll also be able to pull down data speeds that can reach up to 10 times faster than those found on your normal 3G network.

Look for more specifics as far as cities are concerned as we get closer to the carrier’s roll out dates.
