Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Update: Silence Reigns

Published

on

Today, the Sprint Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update officially beat the Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update to public release leaving unsurprised Verizon owners wondering when they might see their update. Unsurprisingly, there are no answers as the companies involved remain silent on the software’s release.

Read: Sprint Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Update Rolling Out Now.

Earlier this month, Google rolled out the Sprint Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update for owners who wished to manually install the update early, before the carrier’s official OTA update. Today, Sprint held up its end of the bargain and started rolling out the Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update over the air to owners.

We imagine that the update will take some time to roll out but most owners should see the update arrive within the next week or so if it hasn’t popped up already.

And while that is fine and dandy for Sprint Galaxy Nexus owners, it’s a miserable situation for Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners who probably assumed they would be the last Nexus in the United States to get Android 4.2 but had hoped that reality might have been different. Turns out, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is indeed the last Nexus to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in the U.S. and unfortunately, the parties behind the update are staying mum on timing for the release of the software to Verizon’s model.

Samsung and Verizon, thus far have refused comment as far as timing is concerned though we did find someone who was willing to give us an honest and candid answer about the update’s timing.

Screen Shot 2013-01-30 at 10.56.30 AMAs device owners know, customer service representatives at companies like Samsung and Verizon are often out of the loop, misinformed, and confused. Occasionally, they offer quality responses and today, we received one from a Samsung customer service rep.

Read: Verizon Stops Selling Galaxy Nexus, Still No Android 4.2.

After inquiring about the Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 update, the service representative noted that she was unable to speculate as to when the update might arrive because that would lead to inaccuracy and confusion. In the world of smartphone updates, that’s a breath of fresh air. Too often, we’ve seen companies make promises they can’t keep.

Though the response was cordial and welcomed, she was still silent about the release date and we suspect that will likely be the case up until Google decides to make the software available through its servers and Verizon decides to complete the task with an official OTA roll out.

These days, a false promise can lead to heavy backlash from a user base so it’s no surprise that silence is reigning here. But that doesn’t mean that Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners are going to be any less frustrated about the situation.

Verizon did roll out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shortly after Sprint did so it could be that we see something arrive soon. Exactly when though remains in the shadows.

This is only for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus CDMA/LTE Version

        1. You Wugfresh’s Nexus Root Toolkit for the whole thing….it is an amazing program to unlock and root your GNEX but you must follow the instructions completely. https://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/

        2. After unlocking and rooting you need to download Mmuzzy’s 4.2.1 rom and GAPPS to your computer located here. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762846

        3. After downloading french Vanilla get to ClockworkMod menu by holding down the Power and both volume buttons and at the same time to get into recovery mode and follow these directions from the above website.

        Directions (Clean Flash)
        1. Wipe factory data/reset
        2. Wipe cache
        3. Go into mounts and storage
        4. Format /system
        5. Format /data
        6. Format /cache
        7. Wipe dalvik

Finally, use the Wugfresh Nexus toolkit and click launch under Advanced Utilities. While you phone is plugged in click flash zip and flash the Mmuzzy French Vanilla Rom and and GAPPS to your phone. The toolkit will do the work for you. Reboot and you are good to go with 4.2.1….took me about an hour to do but I am not a droid expert. I just followed instructions and I had no suprises. Just be slow and methodical at one point I got excited and missed a step and it set me back.

I just tried to share the whole process but it was apparently blocked. All I can say is google Wugfresh’s Nexus root toolkit and Mmuzzy’s french vanilla 4.2.1 rom. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help but you know censorship and all.

Sorry to burst your bubble Chad… I did the same to my gnex.. But muzzys rom is very buggy. GPS sucks, Google wallet doesn’t work, and android tether doesn’t work neither does to foxfi… So what God is that ROM if some of the jet features don’t work.

My GPS and Google navigation work fine. I dont use wallet and I just fired up the android Wi-Fi tethering then used my tablet on it without an issue. No idea what you did to encounter those problems.

Yeah, I just re-reverified my android Wi-Fi tether and it works fine. I did pick up the French vanilla modded version of mmuzzys ROM. GPS fired right up too and actually fatter than before.

So Dave I just fired up Google wallet and it works too… Linked my card then removed it… No issues. Google just suggests only using their software for security reasons. Soooo my bubble is good.

Well Chad. Just because your Google maps launch ” fires up” doesn’t mean your GPS locks in. And come on .. You expect me to believe that you have a nexus phone and your not using Google wallet… Please… And you just now launched it… Save it…

Dude I just did turn by turn directions from my house to a hospital 40 minutes away using navigation NOT maps. Iused wallet linked mine and my wife’s card entered pins and clicked the select button. The green icon in the corner came up. Think what you want but my phone works perfectly using the ROM. Quit being an asshole troll

Wow. You came on here to help people how to get the rom?! Please… You came on here as a show off, on how bad ass you are because you have 4.2 on you Verizon gnex. Save it.. Goes to show how delusional you are. I’m sure you made it safely to the hospital using navigation that ” fires right up” while riding on your rainbow unicorn. Hope that the hospital had your meds, because if not we are all in for a long day on this reply blog. For all the other Verizon galaxy nexus users… Your not missing much on 4.2. Just wait for the update. It should be here very soon. Don’t let a fool like Chad sucker anyone of you to mess up your phone with a very buggy build.

Besides I didn’t have Google wallet prior to flashing this ROM a week ago. I still don’t see a need for it but because made SUCH a big deal about it I checked it out. The only difference is at the top it says “Unsupported Device, Learn More.” It doesn’t matter though because I don’t give two shit’s if you believe me or not, it’s not like the creator of the free ROM is paying me to push it. I was trying to help out Verizon GNEX users and you came on here saying shit doesn’t work when it clearly does because I did a clean install and followed instructions.

Awww poor Davie is jealous…well believe what you want but I’ll let you know what Key Lime Pie is like as well, since Verizon wont get it until months after everyone else, if at all on the Galaxy Nexus. Go back to your job as a soulless Verizon rep shamelessly defending your company. Everyone else I can tell you that everything I have said on here is true bet my life on it. Do I care if you root and rom your phone, no. But if you are sick of Verizon ruining the Nexus experience like I did just know that mmuzzy’s build is fully functional, stable and awesome. Just look around xda, androidcentral, rootwiki, are all touting it. If you don’t like the rom wugfresh can re-flash your old Rom. I just hate trolls like dave that come in here and try and shit on people’s parade when we figure out something awesome and he just doesn’t get it. Cry me a river.

Youtube this “Galaxy Nexus ROM MMuzzy Jelly Bean 4.2.1 JOP40D [FULL REVIEW]” or this “Install Android 4.2 on Verizon Galaxy Nexus” where in the comments mobilecarlos says “Tethering and Google Wallet work fine for me. =]”

I think poor Davie is simply confused about the true purpose of a Nexus device, anyways. If you are the type to always run the “stock” OS from the manufacturer/carrier, then why own a Nexus at all? At the root, the Nexus is a developer device which is meant to run custom developed ROMs. Hence the easily unlocked bootloader.

And for the record, I have no issues with mmuzzy’s 4.2.1 ROM (the vanilla one, not ‘french vanilla’ or ‘chocolate milk’). If your GPS is flaky, the fix is to toggle your location settings off and back on.

But to dave, there is NO problems with mmuzzy’s ROM, it’s more stable than stock 4.1 or 4.0.4 ever was, at least on Verizon’s GNex. No random reboots, no “screen of death”, and no bootloops. The “official” OTAs for this device have ALL suffered from these things.

Uh…I’ve have Muzzy’s Rom, and it’s not buggy on my GNex either. I purchased one of the first Verizon Galaxy Nexus phones, and I’ve been sideloading and using Google Wallet since day one. GPS has worked fine. I get a lock within a few seconds. Oh, I’m on the 4.2 French Vanilla Rom. It’s been really smooth so far.
