Verizon Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean Update Release Date Still Unknown

Published

on

The wait for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update and its release date continues as we move deeper into August with other non-Nexus devices receiving possible release dates.

Earlier today, we heard that the Samsung Galaxy S III, a device not included in the original batch of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean devices, would be getting its update on August 29th. While that’s obviously not official, we also previously heard that the device would be getting the update starting in Q3 which seems to point to that date as being a distinct possibility.

If true, this would leave Verizon about two weeks to roll out the Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to avoid further embarrassment. Remember, it took Verizon nearly five months to roll out one update to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, something that infuriated owners and gave the Nexus experience here in the U.S. a black eye.

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean update has yet to roll out.

Sadly, we haven’t heard about any sort of release date for the software. Google and Verizon continue to remain silent even after the binaries for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 update went into the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). That addition seemed to allude to something coming in the near future.

Thus far though, Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners and Galaxy Nexus owners on other carriers like Sprint, have been left out in the cold, wondering why the Nexus S, a device that is a year older than the Galaxy Nexus, received its update before their device that not only is more recent, but launched with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board.

So now, here we are, more than a month after the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update first started to roll out, for reference it was July 13th, and there is still no sign of Jelly Bean Android 4.1 for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, Sprint Galaxy Nexus or the Sprint Nexus S 4G which has been left out in the cold.

This has forced some Galaxy Nexus owners to go the unofficial route and root their device and install Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on their own.

With that August 29th Galaxy S III Android 4.1 release date fast approaching, we hope that we see some Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 movement soon.

Anyone out there frustrated with the process?

I waited and waited for this phone to be released and now I’m waiting again. This feels like a Verizon screw up to me.

Verizon’s business plan is now clearly to appeal solely to the lowest common denominator of customers. I’m sure VZW now realizes offering a quasi-Nexus phone was a mistake as they have angered a rather tech savvy group of early adopters.

VZW is obviously not comfortable offering tech savvy users an upgradedable experience as they thrive on sameness and offering everyone the same dumbed-down, low-maintenance experience.

There are many customers (myself) that only stay with VZW because we are grandfathered in to data plan. If this goes away (and it sounds like it will) then thousands of persons will be seeking a Nexus elsewhere. Even if I switch to the Window upgraded platform, I’m sure as hell not going to do it with VZW.

Why VZW is obviously so intent in forcing experience users to deal with bloatware and crapware is beyond understanding. If VZW is that uncomfortable with the new Android OSs then quit selling it!

This feels like groundhog day. This has been the case in one form or another since my Droid x. The update to JB will happen soon. There is a new “what is happening here” article every day.

I certainly agree!! I am finding no reason to stay with Verizon at this moment. Unfortunately, I doubt they care!!

It’s cute that people think this phone is still worth a damn.

Well, I finally gave up. I have gotten so tired of the silly Android waiting game for updates, especially for what I was told (when I bought it) was a pure Google phone and would therefore by pass all obstacles and get the updates directly from Google….So I sold my Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) on eBay and activated my iPhone 4. At this point, with this latest dissembling from Verizon and Samsung and Google, I’m not sure if I’ll ever buy another Android phone. At least with Apple iOS, all the phones that are capable receive the update at the same time!

I hope you realize that iPhone 4 doesn’t have the most recent update. It does not include Siri, which is just a piece of software that Apple refuses to include on the phone because they want you to spend a lot of your money. Then they lie and tell you it is a hardware limitation… But, enjoy your new iPhone 4!!!!!!!!!!

I am indeed enjoying my iPhone 4. As a matter of fact it DOES have the most recent iOS software update, 5.1.1, and from what I’ve read, it will receive the soon to be released iOS 6 update. Does that include Siri, no, of course not. So what? At least it gets the basic frame of the update and other perks. If I’d wanted Siri, I’d have purchased an iPhone 4S, but Siri’s not a priority. Anyway, enjoy the wait for your Android 4.1

you buy your phones for the update? im sorry but i feel u made a bad choice going to the iphone.

I’m sorry… You think just because it has the same software label, that makes it the same software? You are sadly mistaken. You will not get facetime over 3G, 4G, Siri, or any of the updates that are merely software based. I could call my Ice Cream Sandwich software 4.1 – that doesn’t mean it is 4.1. How Apple has fooled you, I am sincerely sympathetic, not empathetic, because I don’t know how that feels.

Secondly, This wait for 4.1 is not Google or Android’s flaw – it is Verizon. You cannot judge the most popular Operating System based on the carrier. Verizon is screwing up big time, making people like you think that Android is flawed. I bet you stayed with Verizon, and purchased the iPhone 4 that will not get the latest features. You can call it the most updated version ALL YOU WANT, but that will not put the updated features in there.

Ive debated whether to get the Nexus or wait a few weeks for the SGSIII. I went with the Nexus because of the price and this cool new update call Jelly Bean. Little did i know that they werent going to send it out to me until months later. If i was informed this, i wouldve defiantly went with the SIII. So now im pissed!!! And now they are talking about the SIII getting the update soon!! IM FURIOUS!!!!

I did extensive customer service research through Verizon, Google and Samsung tech support and this is what I discovered. The Verizon Galaxy Nexus is NOT a “pure Google” device. It is a “Samsung” device that carries the same name and Verizon perpetuates that this is the “pure Google” phone, but it is NOT. Google tech support told me that only the GSM Galaxy Nexus sold online in the Google Play store is the “pure Google” phone and those phones have already received the Android 4.1 update. Google has released the binaries to Verizon, but no one (except Verizon Executive) know when Verizon will release the updates. It is time for every Verizon customer to contact Verizon tech support and start threatening to DUMP VERIZON if they don’t release the updated software and stop lieing to us and telling customers this is a “pure Google” phone.

I complained to a Verizon tech-guy at a Verizon corporate store several weeks ago, and he blamed the lack of 4.1 all on Samsung. Go figure. Update to Alex and all you other iPhone 4 naysayers…I just purchased an unlocked Verizon Galaxy Nexus that is running 4.1! Anybody want to buy an iPhone 4 in very good condition?!

I am happy for you! I am no fanboy of Android but I’ve been using it since the Nexus One and I think it’s so much better than iPhone.

This is Verizon’s fault; Samsung makes the phone for the carrier. The Samsung device without a carrier (Unlocked) is already updated. It takes the carrier way too long to update the firmware because they are stupid and want to control everything even though they are just providing service. I would be very surprised if the Nexus was released on Verizon’s network again – If it is, I am not purchasing it. I will purchase the unlocked version.

Verizon Techs are notoriously misinformed. The Galaxy Nexus on Verizon IS a Nexus and is supported by AOSP. The updates come from Google Servers and not Samsung or Verizon servers. HOWEVER, Verizon has to approve the rom. Verizon is the one at fault here, not Google or Samsung. You can, of course, ROOT your phone if you’d like like I already have done. It’s TRIVIAL to go back to stock (one button press in Wugfresh).

This has ZERO to do with Verizon bloatware as the stock rom doesn’t even have any bloatware installed that can’t be removed.

I’m new to the world of rooted/jailbroken phones….if a phone is rooted and already has 4.1 installed, will it get future updates directly from Google?

        • gorkon

          08/16/2012 at 8:52 am

No. However updates by ROM devs are usually ahead of whatever Verizon does.

None of what you said is 100% accurate… quite far from it actually.

There is no need to “root” your phone. Just unlock the bootloader. From there you can load a custom recovery and flash whatever you like on the device. No need to obtain root first. Also, if you just boot into recovery and not flash it, you preserve your stock recovery and can still update as long as you are on a stock or stock-rooted ROM.
