Verizon Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update: 5 Things to Know

Published

on

After a bit of a wait, AT&T’s Galaxy S4 Lollipop update finally has some company as Verizon today announced the arrival of its own Galaxy S4 Lollipop update and release. With a Verizon Galaxy S4 Lollipop release here, we take a look at some of the important things Verizon users need to know about their latest upgrade.

In late January, Samsung started rolling out its Galaxy S4 Lollipop update. The timing came as a bit of a surprise given that it beat both the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge to Lollipop. Flagships tend to get updated first. Slowly but surely, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop update has started to gain ground both here in the United States and in the international community.

Just a few short days ago, AT&T became the first carrier to push a Galaxy S4 Lollipop update in the United States. Shortly after that roll out, AT&T pushed an update to its Galaxy S4 Active variant. The two Galaxy S4 updates were the first Lollipop upgrades in the United States but they certainly aren’t going to be the last.

Today, another Galaxy S4 Lollipop release has been confirmed. The Verizon Galaxy S4 Lollipop update is official and it’s going to be heading out to Verizon Galaxy S4 users all over the United States starting this week. With that in mind, here’s what Verizon Galaxy S4 users need to know about the Lollipop update and the release.

Prepare for the Verizon Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update

Right now, ahead of the carrier’s OTA, is a great time for Verizon Galaxy S4 users to prepare for the major changes coming with the Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

We’ve outlined a number of steps to take before installing the Verizon Galaxy S4 Lollipop update and we’ve also prepared some Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 release date tips that will help Verizon Galaxy S4 users with today’s release.

Verizon Galaxy S4 users don’t need to follow them all but we suggest taking a look at them before making the move from Android 4.4 KitKat to Android 5.0 Lollipop. This is a big update, arguably the biggest ever for the Verizon Galaxy S4, a device that started on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Verizon Galaxy S4 Lollipop Release Date

Verizon’s told us that the Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop update will start rolling out to the device this week. It says that the update will be rolling out in phases which means that while some users will see the update in the early part of the roll out, others will likely be waiting a few days for the Galaxy S4 Lollipop update to show up. If the update is up to snuff, we should see the update hit everyone within the next week or so.

Galaxy S4 users interested in making the move from Android 4.4 KitKat to Android 5.0 Lollipop will want to head into the device’s settings to manually check for the software. At some point, a download prompt will appear and the process will begin. We recommend checking a couple of times a day and no more than that.

Samsung says that its Android 5.0 upgrades can take upwards of 30 minutes. Verizon Galaxy S4 users will also need a ton of free space to install Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA. The file should be in and around 1GB in size.

Verizon Galaxy S4 Lollipop Features

Verizon’s also posted the changes that will be coming with its Galaxy S4 Lollipop update. The carrier’s change log outlines the big changes that Android 5.0 Lollipop brings to the table.

The update, which is build LRX22C.I545VRUGOC1, will bring Google’s Material Design, changes to the lock screen, a floating action button, and some changes to Samsung KNOX. It’s a substantial update for the Galaxy S4 and there’s a very good chance that it will serve as Verizon’s final update for its aging former flagship. You’ll also want to take a look at the slideshow below that outlines some of the key differences between Android 4.4 KitKat and Google’s new Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

With Android 5.0 Lollipop Google has slightly improved the lockscreen. There's now a shortcut to the dialer by swiping left to right, and notifications are more useful and interactive. Shown right on the lockscreen they can be swiped away, slide down to expand, or double tap to instantly unlock right into that app or notification. Everything is simple and smooth, and we still have full-screen album artwork on the lockscreen while playing music.

First update successful other than everytime I unlock my screen i get redirected to a page saying ive won something. Today, i was prompted for the second update. 2 hours later and my phone still wont reboot. Everytime it tries, it does back to “installing updates”. I’ve taken my battery out and it immediately goes back to “installing updates”. WHAT DO I DO???!!!???
