Verizon Warns Emergency Dialer May Not Work on Samsung Fascinate

Published

U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless had sent out a massive text message campaign to users of its Samsung Fascinate, a Galaxy S variant for the carrier, warning users that the Android smartphone’s emergency dialer may not work when using a pattern lock screen. According to the carrier, the bug is present for users of the DL09 software package, and a software update will be pushed out when ready to remedy the problem. The carrier is advising users to not use a pattern unlocker at this time, which would ensure that the emergency dialer works in the event of an emergency.

To check what software version of Android your Verizon Wireless Samsung Fascinate is running, and if you have the DL09 software that was referenced, go to Menu, Settings, About Phone, and view Build Number.

Here is the copy from the SMS that is being issued to affected customers:

“Free VZW Msg(s) – Use of your emergency call button on your Fascinate phone with software SCH-i500.DL09 may not work while the phone is locked. A software fix will be pushed to your device soon. Until available, disable pattern lock to ensure emergency calls can be placed. To check your software version press Applications>Settings>About phone and view Build number. Only version SCHi-500.DL09 is impacted by this issue. Versions SCH-i500.DI01 and SCH-i500.DH12 are functioning properly. To disable pattern lock press Applications>Settings>Location & Security and remove check from Require Pattern.”
