Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Tab Gingerbread Update Is Imminent

Published

on

We were just wondering about whether or not the original Samsung Galaxy Tab would ever seen Android 2.3 Gingerbread let alone Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and now, those of you with Verizon’s version of the tablet have an answer to one of those questions. The carrier has announced that it will be bringing Gingerbread to the slate in the near future but unfortunately, no specific date was given.

And while it will definitely be getting a boost up to Gingerbread, Verizon is still mum on whether or not it will every be upgraded beyond that. The fact that it has taken this long to get Android 2.3.5 is disheartening. So is the lack of Honeycomb.

Still, don’t give up hope just yet. Not until they give us a definitive no.

Here is what it is coming in the update. It’s a list that should please Galaxy Tab owners:

  • Improved security for the PIN method. When using the PIN, the device will no longer request a symbol as a numeric entry
  • Improved word selection and copy functionality
  • A ‘View Data Plan’ icon so that users can adjust their plans accordingly
  • Verizon Data Service feature will allow users to see how much data they have used so that they won’t go over
  • A new download manager app
  • The ability to use the front-facing camera as a camcorder
  • Widgets will resize to reflect landscape and portrait mode more accurately
  • Support for Verizon Pay As You Go prepaid plans
  • Google security patches

Not bad. Obviously, the wait could have been a little bit shorter but hey, at least it’s coming right?

We’ll let you know when it does. And in the meantime, you can check out the details here.

Downloaded last night, of course it broke rook, and caused an infinite loop reboot until I removed the SD card.  I had to copy and nuke my Sd card, and have been slowly moving files back on to try and find what broke it.
