Video 1st Look: Spint’s Samsung Transform

Published

on

Last week at CTIA, Sprint announced a trio of Android phones.  These 3 phones all work with their new trick called Sprint ID. Among all this Windows Phone excitement, I found time to do quick unboxing and 1st look at the Samsung Transform. The Transform has a slide out keyboard, runs Android 2.1, and packs a nice sized 1500mAh battery.

Samsung Transform
The Transform is a designed for heavy text and email users. It has a 3.5-inch HVGA screen, a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 3.2 megapixel camera with camcorder functions, and a front-facing camera for video conferencing.  The Samsung Transform will ship with Android 2.1 running on an 800mhz processor. It’s only got 512 MB of internal storage, but has a MicroSD card slot that will support up to 32GB. The 3.5″ TFT screen is powered by a pretty nice sized 1500 mah battery. You can grab the Samsung Transform on Oct. 10 and the pricing will be $149.99 with a two-year service agreement. (after a $100 mail-in-rebate)

I plan to do another video tonight to show how Sprint ID works, so stay tuned.

I’m amazed that new Android phones are being released that are still 2.1. And HVGA, for that matter. I could see a low end HVGA device running 2.1 for $50 on contract, but not $150.

Regarding the close price proximity of the EVO and Epic: In addition to the initial cost, they also require an additional $9.99 per month fee for the “extra features”, over and above one of the standard data plans. In my market, Sprint doesn’t have 4G running presently, and no official roll-out date in the future, at least not disclosed to the masses. I’m not a power-user per say, so for now, I’ll save the extra 10 bucks a month plus the additional up-front cost, and in a year, when we’ll probably have 4G available, upgrade to the latest, greatest replacement for the EVO/Epic, as they’ll be pretty long in the tooth by then. Also, I believe Sprint has announced there will be an upgrade available to 2.2, although loading it in the first place would have been nice.

Thanks John. I guess $149.99 after all the smoke settles isn’t too bad. I really like the keyboard. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find time to do the Sprint ID video today.
