Wait for Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update Continues

Published

on

As we enter the month of August, owners of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus are still wondering when their devices will see the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.

Prior to Google’s announcement of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, many wondered whether the Verizon Galaxy Nexus would be one of the first devices to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. After all, it was the first Galaxy Nexus on an American carrier, it had the latest hardware and it was a device that tarnished the Nexus name.

We thought Google and Verizon might try and make it up to customers, especially those who dealt with the device’s issues at launch.

Google then gave owners hope by stating that the update would be rolling out to an initial batch of devices, a list that Google said included “all Galaxy Nexus” devices.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus are still waiting for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Those dreams have been dashed though as thus far, we haven’t heard anything from anyone in regards to either the Sprint or Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.

And thus far, we’ve seen the update roll out to the other devices included in the initial batch of developer devices:

  • Nexus S Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update – Started rolling out on July 20th
  • Motorola Xoom Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update – Started rolling out on July 27th
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update – Started rolling out on July 10th

For whatever reason, the phone that launched with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board, the non-unlocked version Samsung Galaxy Nexus, is last to the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean party with no invitation in sight.

We assume that August is going to be the month that American carriers (the Nexus S 4G on Sprint doesn’t yet have Android 4.1 Jelly Bean) get it together and get the update out but nothing is confirmed.

What is confirmed is that devices older than the Galaxy Nexus and arguably less important have received their updates before the Galaxy Nexus.

This doesn’t just apply to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus either. This applies to all Galaxy Nexus devices on carriers around the world as none of them have received the update as of yet.

So, so much for one of the best perks of buying the latest Nexus smartphone. And so much for Google and a major U.S. carrier smoothing things over with disgruntled owners.

As always, we’ll let you know when we hear something.

I just got off the phone with Verizon and they claim that those updates come straight from the manufacturer and that the carrier is not holding up any updates. That sounds like a load of crap because my wife’s Nexus S (T-Mobile) received it’s Jelly Bean update over a week ago.

Is this whole update fiasco giving me grounds to return this wanna-be “Nexus” phone and cancel this ridiculous contract? I did pay all that money to get a Nexus phone after all, and having the Google updates after everyone else is not a Nexus experience, that’s for sure.

Verizon told me the same thing back when I called about the first ICS update. My wife’s Nexus is having the seeming abundant issue where the phone keeps dropping its connection. After passing us to multiple levels of service techs who couldn’t fix it, the last one finally told us that yes; Google does release the updates, but that Verizon does not release them until it passes their quality control, because they want to make sure that their customers have the best experience. Verizon told us that the network connectivity issue is a known issue and the 4.04 update should fix it.

By the way, it didn’t fix it. We have had 4 replacements, and it is at Samsung for the SECOND time being looked at, as it still has the issue. Funny thing is, my Nexus has no issues! My wife finally got fed up since she hasn’t had a working phone since we bought them in April, and she bought a Galaxy SIII, which works fine. Of course Amazon won’t take the phone back because it’s over the return time (since we were told to wait for the update which would fix the issue). So I’m going to have to make some noise to get my money back.

But I digress, the point is, Verizon IS to blame for holding the update. But I believe Google is to blame as well, because they should have negotiated with Verizon and made sure that the Nexus experience is met if Verizon wanted to sell the phone; because fist updates and no bloat-ware is the reason people want a Nexus; it’s why I bought one! I had no idea that the Verizon Nexus wasn’t really a Nexus. And if Verizon and Google can’t come to an agreement to treat the Nexus as a Nexus, they should have called it something else. So as far as I’m concerned, I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy V, not a Nexus. Talk about false advertising.

So frustrating. Why no word? Why not “We’re currently testing JB with our CDMA network to ensure quality performance.” Why remain silent? This is just like their last update, and their release of the phone. This phone is cursed, sad to say.

So hilarious. I see that Verizon is now subsidizing the phones for $0.01 for new customers that sign a contract. To me, 349 USD is a small price to pay for first-in-line update status. My HSPA+ GNex came straight from Google last Friday (2 day shipping standard)…it was Jelly Bean’d out within 15mins of powering up…automatic OTA, nothing for me even to click, device just let me know it had to restart. I know the phone is “only” 1.2 dual-core, “only” 4.65 inches across, but seriously, who doesn’t loathe all the crap cell phone carriers put us through? I am now unlocked, contract free, able to operate on any network with NO bloatware to slow things down…AND I’ll get all the upgrades snappity-quick as soon as Google releases them. YES!! So worth it for $349! Verizon people, sometimes when you “win” (ie, free awesome smartphone) you lose. Hehe :)

Not so much for buying a Nexus Device as buying one linked to a carrier. Not the fault of Google or android, my Galaxy Nexus is sporting jelly bean as we speak and I love it but it is an unlocked phone from Google. The problem here as always is the carriers making their changes causing the hold ups. Foreign unlocked versions seem to be able to get their updates in a timely manner. It is the US carriers and their bloatware and overlays that seem to be the hold up.

Verizon sucks. Do they purposely shoot themselves in the foot? On one hand, their coverage is the best, but on the other hand, they drag their feet with the updates. Makes me what to cancel service.

Speaking of Verizon, at least they got their just deserts from the FCC on their tethering restrictions!

When is someone (I continue to hope Google) going to do something about the fact that, via the announcement of the Verizon Wireless & Google operating agreement on October 6, 2009 (referenced here –> https://news.verizonwireless.com/news/2009/10/pr2009-10-05g.html) which states “… this agreement is a commitment by the companies to devote substantial resources to accelerate delivery of leading-edge innovation that will put unique applications in the hands of consumers quickly.”, Verizon is clearly in violation the agreement. Google has been delivering on their end…Verizon isn’t holding up their end. Verizon should GIVE us the Nexus UPDATES as we Nexus owners were lead to believe we would!
