Who Says Folks Don’t Want Inking on the iPad?

Published

on

Some say that no one wants Inking on the iPad. Looks like quite a few folks are at least interested in trying it out based on what’s hot and what’s top grossing in the App Store. Penultimate (iTunes link) has only been available since April 16, so that’s four days and already it occupies the number 1 slot in Paid Apps and the number 2 slot in Top Grossing. Given that it costs $2.99 and it is in second place to Pages which costs $9.99 and has been available since Day 1, I think that’s saying something. So, I’m guessing quite a few folks see the merit in being able to quickly jot down a note in Ink on the iPad.

I’ve yet to give Penultimate a real spin but in quick testing the Inking does display much smoother than other iPad apps I’ve tried.

Looks like a great app, but it just seems worthless without a stylus. I mean, as the screenshots show, with your finger you can jot down 3 equations per page. This isn’t in any way practical for classroom notes. In any one of my classes, I’ll need to take down over a hundred equations per lecture.

It just makes me realize the giant missed opportunity for the iPad to be the ultimate classroom tablet.

Absolutely. If they’d done it, even for $100 more, they would’ve had a great shot at locking up the market for years like the Apple II (IMHO).

Steve Jobs DOES NOT LIKE PENS!
May be public will tell him about pens, and what he missed.
I have been using Tablet-PC since 2003, love them.

Yeah…he didn’t like 2-button mice either. I prefer a stylus and will probably not get a touch screen when I finally upgrade from my current tablet (st5022) as I don’t really want to deal with the fingerprint issue (and don’t see the need for touch yet — no killer app)

I’m a graphic designer and I bought Penultimate and love it — it’s wonderful for jotting notes and sketches for a project. The size limit isn’t an issue as you can create as many “notebooks” as you want, each with unlimited pages. Great for brainstorming.

Though I will be checking out a stylus — you can get them for iPad and it would make my handwriting a lot easier. I’d definitely use a stylus if I was writing equations for class!

Viewing this on the iPad now, and I noticed a lot of note taking oriented apps in the store too Warner…

iPad is certainly an awesome device, but severely let down by it’s kludgy input method… Typing this comment for example was extremely frustrating!!

Having said that handwriting recognition like I rely on with my tablet would not be possible with this processing power.

I’ll keep dreaming about a device that will come in this size that I can really take notes on…

How do all these apps work without an active digitizer? I don’t think I could write very long without resting my hand on the screen like one does with an actual piece of paper?

I can think of so many other things I can do with an Ipad, I can overlook this one missing feature

The truth is in the “pudding”… so a phrase goes. The fact that the apps at the top are for inking, speaks volumes.

I am still trying to work through the comment about the stylus, meaning you failed. I am reading EVERYWHERE about how people are using keyboards to make the iPad more business/work friendly.

What am I missing… what is more “mobile” a stylus or a keyboard?

I use a tablet pc @ work. I teach and the kids love using it. We even have SMART Boards in the room. They would rather use the tablet over the SMART Board. I am loving it, especially since they just upgraded me from a TC4200 running Tablet XP to a Lenovo x60 running Win 7!

Stylus = Fail is in reference to a a Steve Jobs quiote.
“It’s like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it.”

This is not the opinion of many visitors to this site.

I am returning my iPad today, having had it for 13 days. I like it, and find it handy for consuming information, but not creating it to any great degree. And since I did not net get the 3G, it is really only useful when around a wireless access point I can access and trust. I may get a 3G version in a couple of weeks, but for now the Fujitsu T2010 I have had for 1.5 years years remains the best tablet ever made in my opinion.
