Why You Should Wait for the LG G4

Published

on

Over the past month more rumors have continued to surface about the new LG G4, and it will be a smartphone worth waiting for. Last year the impressive LG G3 was arguably one of the best Android smartphones released, and had some of the best specs available. However, the LG G3 is a smartphone that is now a year old, and about to be replaced.

Last year, LG announced the all-new LG G3 at the end of May, but it took well over a month to finally arrive for US buyers in July. The phone was very popular for having a stunning 5.5-inch display with extremely sleek bezels, an improved camera, and it ran Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. That said, something better is coming soon.

The LG G3 was considered one of the best phones of 2014, and we gave it a raving report in our full LG G3 Review. It’s sleek, powerful, and has a very capable camera. And while others like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 were both great phones, they were very similar to the models before them, while LG has continued to try and offer something new, unique, and different with each release.

With 2014 behind us and a new year of premium flagship Android smartphones coming soon, buyers are likely weighing all of their options as contracts are about to expire, upgrades are becoming available, and all major manufacturers are working on high end smartphones with new features for 2015.

LG’s G3 offered a first in the US 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD (2K) display in a slim 5.5-inch screen with nearly no bezels, the buttons on back similar to the G2 the year prior, and was a much improved device. Those who like what it had to offer or want something more, may be interested in what’s coming next from LG, and that is the LG G4 or the G Flex 2.

Lately we’ve been hearing more and more rumors about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 and the new HTC One M9, two phones which will be extremely impressive in 2015 and offer the LG G4 some stiff competition. And while it sounds like both will arrive before the LG G4, it may be worth it to wait a few weeks after the two devices above are announced to see what LG has in store with the G4.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 is rumored to have the same size 5.1-inch display, with the company primarily focusing on a new aluminum design, better camera, and a smooth interface on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop. There’s also reportedly a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge coming with a curve down one side of the display.

Then there’s the HTC One M9. It could have an edge-to-edge glass front panel on the same 5-inch screen, or a bigger 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD display, similar to last years LG G3. All of these things sound nice, but LG has a few extra months to prepare, and could have something even better to offer.

LG G4 Rumors

While both the phones above sound great, not to mention we can expect a rather impressive phone from Motorola in the second half of the year, it’s the LG G4 that will be perfectly positioned to attract many buyers. We’re hearing LG is not announcing it at Mobile World Congress where both the Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9 will be unveiled, and rather taking a little more time to perfect the device before its release.

The LG G3 was released a few months earlier than the G2, and the G2 arrived a month earlier than the original LG Optimus G before it. This year we’re hearing something similar is planned, and the LG G4 could get announced in late March or early April, and released in May. A full month or more sooner than last year. It won’t beat the main two competitors to market, but it it may offer enough to convince buyers to wait a month for it.

LG G4 Specs (Rumored)

  • 5.5-inch 3K 2880 x 1620 resolution
  • 8-core Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM (possibly 4GB)
  • 32/64GB storage and micro-SD support
  • 16 Megapixel OIS+ Camera
  • Built-in stylus
  • Android 5.0.1 Lollipop
  • 3,000 mAh battery (or bigger)
  • more

Based on what we’re hearing about some of the competition, LG should have a decent edge over what they’ll be offering. The latest news claims LG will once again set the bar for screen technology in 2015, and the LG G4 will have a new 5.5-inch bezel-free 2880 x 1620 3k resolution display. The bezels will be extremely small again, with the buttons being on the back, and then everything inside will be much improved too.

For improved gaming, multi-tasking, and daily performance on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop it will have a new 8-core processor with 3GB of RAM, 32 or 64GB of storage, a micro-SD slot (which Samsung may abandon in the S6) and even a built-in stylus. This means the new LG G4 could take on the Galaxy S6 and Note 4 (or Galaxy Note 5) all in one.

Then of course there’s the battery. The LG G4 will reportedly offer the same 3,000 mAh battery as previous years, if not one slightly larger. This is already bigger than what rumors suggest will be on the HTC One M8 and the Galaxy S6. So it could have more to offer, a higher resolution display, a sleek design, and better battery life.

For now the rumors are still light, but as the competition starts releasing their phones, more details will start to emerge. It’s too early to tell what we can expect from the LG G4, but most likely the company will look to take on the Galaxy S6, HTC One M9, Moto X3, and anything else from the competition.

As we said above, LG has bumped up the release date with each new smartphone, so we could be looking forward to an announcement and release date before the end of May. We’ll keep an eye out for more details. All said and done, the LG G4 should once again be one of the better phones of the year, and surely one worth waiting for.

How they will not only play the ‘raising numbers’ game. What I am saying is, who is actually waiting for a 3k screen?
The LG G3 had one bottleneck and that is its battery life and I wonder if this step towards 3k will do it any good as the 2k screen already drained the battery quite harshly.

And then there is the size. I went to the so in June of this year to buy myself the LG G3 but the moment I saw its size I backed off and decided to cancel my plans to replace my Galaxy S2. With all due respect, this is not a smartphone. For me it is a phablet. I use my phone for work as well. How am I supposed to move freely with something like that in my pocket?
I heard rumors the LG G4 will be downsized to 5.2 but for me that will not be enough. I have to see the difference between 5 inch and 5.1 inch as these will respectively be the M9 and the S6 which are more likely to get my attention due to their smaller size. Well, smaller than the LG anyway as 5 inch is still not small at all.

Lay a G3 on the s5 or m8. The foot print is the same. Big screen in a small phone

Yes, indeed, the body-to-screen ratio of both the M8 and S5 were terrible and they indeed kinda matched the G3 in overall size hence why I haven’t upgraded yet and the fact I had other issues with the M8 and the S5. What I am, however, getting quite sure of is that this will not be the case anymore with both the M9 and the S6. Although I admit the latter haven’t quite convinced me of this but the M9’s body-to-screen ratio looks slimmed down quite thoroughly if to believe the latest leaks of the device and in all honesty, I do believe those renders are indeed the M9 and M9 Plus, Ace, …, whatever the name for the bigger version. Let us wait and see and prey they aren’t too big :)))

Premium looks are only for point of sale and only adds cost.
A decent protective case personalises more.
I hope LG does use it’s own 8 core processor (64 bit hopefully) with 4GB of ram and the capacity to run a 256GB SD card if and when they are released this year.
My current G3 is simply superlative 97% of the time but I definitely want a better low light camera and less of the LG overlayed UI.

Not everyone puts their phone in a case, and if toy have to choose between a brushed aluminium phone or a polycarbonate plastic one you’ll choose aluminium every time.

LG don’t produce their own processors. They use quallcomm cpu’s, almost certainly the snapdragon 810.

The SDXC standard can support up to 2tb cards. If your phone can support a 64gb card, it can support anything up to 2tb.

Really? So buying a 700 euro plastic phone is the better alternative?

I agree to a certain extend that it will affect pricing to use better looking materials and well, it sure seems Samsung is going to stretch this into the absurd if those leaked prices hold any truth but there are numerous examples of other brands that managed to stay under the price of an S5 and have used better materials. And don’t make the mistake of those brands all to be inferior in what they deliver!

But anno 2015 I think we can really start to be demanding about our android platform based phones. The time that we were already glad to have an alternative to apple is over thus making its users now also picky on the design side of things and come on, wasn’t that about getting time?

I visually hope LG G4 has something extra to offer. Thanks for the post as I come to know about various facts about LG’s devices. When you go for the comparison with Samsung S series then there can be many aspects where LG G series will fall. In any manner LG is upgrading its device and we will see lot more stuff into it and that also in near future.
