Why You Should Wait for the iPhone 5S

Published

on

There is no summer iPhone 5S release, but that doesn’t mean its too soon to start waiting for the iPhone 5S — in fact this is the time to start waiting for a new iPhone.

Apple just announced iOS 7, which delivers a completely new look for the operating system and a plethora of great new features and  it gives us a possible timeline for the iPhone 5S release.

iPhone 5S rumors are in full swing, and while we don’t expect the big upgrades like LTE and a bigger screen that the iPhone 5 brought to the table, we do expect Apple is planning iPhone 5S and iOS 7 features that will make it worth the wait.

Apple remains secretive about plans for a new iPhone in 2013, but companies that make the parts inside the iPhone aren’t aas tight lipped about the device, and are the source of leaks and photos that help us figure out what Apple is planning for the iPhone 5S this fall.

The fact there there are so many unknowns about the iPhone 5S, and the likely hood of an iPhone 5S that looks like the iPhone 5 makes the decision to wait for the iPhone 5S tough.

Gotta Be Mobile is ready to help with a list of reasons iPhone buyers should wait for the iPhone 5S instead of buying the iPhone 5 right now. These reasons also apply to users thinking of buying an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S before September 2013 as well.

Multiple sources agree that the iPhone 5S release date will land in September or October. In addition to the supply chain leaks and analyst commentary, iPhone 4S upgrades are already coming due on many carriers for users who bought the iPhone 4S at launch.

iPhone 4S users are up for a new iPhone this month.

iPhone 4S users are up for a new iPhone this month.

Multiple Verizon Wireless accounts that purchased an iPhone 4S on contract are eligible for an upgrade in late June. Users who purchased an iPhone 4S on release date can get a new iPhone as early as June 14th.

Even if your account offers a cheap upgrade to the iPhone 5, it’s worth waiting for the iPhone 5S. Here’s why.

Expect New Exclusive Features

The new iPhone always arrives with new features. With an iPhone 5S, it’s possible that more of these features will arrive as software items, similar to Siri launching as an iPhone 4S exclusive, but there is a chance for new hardware features as well. Here are some things the iPhone

Better Cameras

If one iPhone 5S feature is guaranteed it’s a better camera. Apple is focused on making the iPhone the go to camera for users and is offering a new camera app with iOS 7 in addition to launching a nationwide iPhone camera ad.

The iPhone 5S could feature a new camera.

The iPhone 5S could feature a new camera.

The iPhone 5S could see a 12MP or 13MP sensor that delivers better low light photos on the rear of the device. This new sensor could also come with a dual-LED flash that would offer more light when needed for a better flash experience. Apple could also boost the front facing camera to deliver sharper photos and 1080P FaceTime HD video calls.

Fingerprint Reader

The biggest rumor for the iPhone 5S is a fingerprint reader that will let users sign in with the swipe of a finger. This could also tie into a mobile payment system that secures credit cards with a fingerprint.

iCloud keeps credit cards on the iPhone

The new iCloud Keychain will bring your credit card to the iPhone this fall.

Apple announced iCloud Keychain as part of IOS 7 and OS X Mavericks. This service stores your payment information in iCloud, and keeps it on your devices. Right now this is aimed at making online payments, but if the iPhone 5S comes with a fingerprint reader maybe we will see a mobile payment portion built-in as an exclusive feature.

Secret iOS 7 Feature

Speaking of exclusive features. Apple is likely holding back a secret iOS 7 feature to show off at the iPhone 5S launch event. Apple did this with Siri on the iPhone 4S and we expect something similar to arrive on the iPhone 5S. This could be a new camera feature, something to do with mobile payments or something completely unexpected.

Possible New iPhone 5S Colors

The iPhone 5S will very likely look the same as the iPhone 5 with a 4-inch display and a aluminum back with a chamfered edge, but we could see new colors.

iPhone 5S colors like iPod Touch 2013

The iPhone 5S may come in color options.

Rumors point to Apple offering iPhone 5S color options similar to the iPod touch 5th generation. This could be tough to keep in stock at launch, but consumer demand for third party iPhone color services and cases as well as informal polling of iPhone owners indicates there is demand for a pink iPhone 5S or a gold iPhone 5S.

Faster Processor and Longer Battery Life

In addition to offering a better camera, Apple will very likely deliver a new processor on the iPhone 5S. This could be the Apple A6X processor from the iPad 4, which boasts better graphics abilities — to pair up with an iOS 7 iPhone controller.

Apple could also jump up to an Apple A7 processor which is rumored to be in the works by multiple Apple partners.

A new processor could offer better battery life for the iPhone 5S. Even adding a larger screen and 4G LTE, Apple increased iPhone battery life from the iPhone 4S to the iPhone 5, and it’s likely we’ll see similar small boosts again.

Longevity

Buying an iPhone 5 today means locking in for two years on most carriers, and on Verizon and AT&T it means locking in for a full two years with no early upgrade options. There’s no sense in buying an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S at this point as the phones are inching closer to the end of software updates. We are already seeing Apple drop features from the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S with the new iOS 7 release.

Even though the iPhone 5 will likely get iOS updates for the duration of the contract, when Apple announces new software in 2014 we will likely see features drop from the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 Price Drop

If you are dead set on getting the iPhone 5, you’ve had it with the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S or whatever mid-range Android phone you are stuck with, would $100 convince you to wait for the iPhone 5S?

Expect a $100 iPhone 5 price drop when the iPhone 5S arrives.

Expect a $100 iPhone 5 price drop when the iPhone 5S arrives.

Apple drops the price of each previous iPhone by $100 when rolling out a new model, which means the iPhone 5 should drop to $99 when the iPhone 5S release arrives. That’s enough to buy a great iPhone 5 case, a spare lightning cable and cover tax.

It’s still worth saving up the extra $100 for the iPhone 5S, but if you are only planning on the iPhone 5, it’s a much better deal at $99.

It’s Only 3 or 4 Months

Apple is preparing to launch an iPhone 5S in 2013, and many sources agree that the iPhone 5S release is likely to come in the next three to four months.

Even with a rumored setback in production, sources claim the iPhone 5S launch is set for September, and Apple will likely offer up a release within 2 weeks of the launch.

At worst, users are likely looking at a wait until October for the iPhone 5S. Even though it seems like a long time, it makes sense to wait in order to get the new features especially if you lock into a two-year-contract.

It seems to be much of the same with Apple… I don’t think the hardware upgrades will have folks flocking to purchase, but the prospect of iOS7 does carry some promise. I’ll stick to my $99 upgrade to the iPhone 5 when the 5S is released (with bugs), and be content using many if not all of the same features that will be available on the new hardware platform.

The reason I always like waiting until the S series iPhone are released is because they usually have the fixes to a lot of bugs the non-S series iPhones tend to have.

Sorry, but nothing mentioned is enough to make me want to leave my Android phone and run back to Apple for a warmed-over iPhone 5S. While iOS 7 has some interesting features, I see nothing I want that I don’t already have with my current phone and I hate the new color scheme. It looks like a eight year old developed it in art class. If you really want an iPhone, wait for iPhone 6 when the phone is at least expected to have a decent sized screen. All the S in iPhone 5S stands for is Sucker because you know something better is coming the next year and you will regret not waiting.

take your droid and stick it up your you know what!the droid is lacking in so many ways relative to the iphone. the iphone is no question light years ahead of the droid. the droid may give you more freedom with the OS, but really, what does it give you that the iPhone doesnt? NFC?! Big Deal! who uses that?! google maps? iphone has that. google voice? iphone has that as well now working. gigantic screen? i have an ipad mini.app store is by far the largest. device to device sync is seamless. i still use my gmail account via exchange and sync everything with googles servers…i cant seem to find a reason to go BACK to the Droid…even when i had the HTC One X…was a good phone, but def not an iPhone…

Ha,ha typical iPhone fanboy whiner. BTW, it’s not a “Droid”, but you undoubtedly wouldn’t understand what I mean, so just leave it at that. As for “being light years ahead”, surely you jest. I left iPhone because it was over a year late to the LTE party, not customizable, and a kiddie sized 4″ display. Good luck with your Apple version maps, hope you don’t get lost, even Apple apologized for it. Good luck carrying your iPad mini in your jeans, genius. What whiner….

I have been an iPhone guy since 2008 and even though I love the product, it seems like I am always waiting and baking on new and exciting hardware and always hear promises but Apple does not deliver. I am converting to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, as it has the best hardware, great software at a reasonable price (Same retail price as the Iphone 5. Everyone uses thier device differently. I am more web based and video streaming. Maybe one day apple will catchup to the marketplace and stop resting on what the use to be and I’ll be back

With iOS7 Apple will give us the choice between light and dark themes. So there will be choice. ;)

Another reason to wait for the 5s if you stick with iPhone may be 128GB.

I’m waiting to see what Samsung and Nokia phablets will be available in late 2013/early 2014.

I currently have an iphone 4S and will wait for the 5S. However, if Apple ever succumbs to the pressure of matching the astronomical screen size of some of these phones that are out now, I will never buy again. Not everyone wants to carry around an IMAX movie theater screen in their purse or pocket.

Lets be honest, you guys thought it was going to come out in June, you guys have NO IDEA when it will come out and you have been just guessing for a half a year. With a 2 year contract there is no reason to wait 3-4 months when you don’t know what your getting or if its only that long.

I have had several Android phones, and everytime a software upgrade came about my phone completely went haywire and messed up… At least with my iPhone, when I upgrade the software I never have issues, not to mention that the battery life is 10x better than any android on the market… Apples products always promise greatness in my eyes even if their software is a year or so behind android…. I will never switch back to android at this point and still get android users to switch to iPhone and they’re always happy that they did ;)

      06/12/2013 at 8:12 pm

…and the iPhone 5s may not have any of those colors and just to let you know, the android color schemes are dull and boring… At least I know I’ll get a shiny apple on the back of my new phone ;)

I have the Lumia 920 but started out with the Samsung Infuse back in 2009 I believe. My girlfriend bought an iPhone 4 yesterday and I am already in love with it and it’s only a 4! Will definitely be switching to the iPhone shortly! Apps look so much better and have so many more awesome features that I can actually use!

Apple iPhone has a better battery life? lol you are wrong, for an example, Galaxy note 2, packing a 3100mah battery, or the droid RAZR maxx HD, with a 3300 man battery. Apple loses.

The finger print feature seems to be the best so far and i don’t think i’ll be upgrading probably not till the 6 because the s versions of the iphones usually don’t have alot of new features
