Why You Shouldn’t Buy the 128GB iPhone 6

Published

on

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are out in full force, although some buyers are still waiting for their backorder to arrive. In any case, there are some consumers who have yet to purchase an iPhone 6, and that’s mostly because they might still be pondering over which storage capacity to go for.

Both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus come in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage sizes. We’ve already said our peace about how the 16GB version is just too small for most users, as you’ll quickly fill it up with apps, music, and other files. However, there’s another storage size option that you’ll most likely want to stay away from, and it’s the 128GB model.

I know what you’re thinking: “I might need that much storage, so isn’t it best just to be safe and get the 128GB option?”

It never hurts to have more storage than you need, but when you’d have to pay $100 more in order to get the 128GB storage flavor, it’s money that you most likely will never end up using at its full potential. Here’s why you should stay away from the 128GB iPhone 6 and stick with the 64GB model.

Don’t Listen to Your Gut

If your gut is telling you to get the 128GB version, don’t listen to it. Your gut doesn’t know what’s best. Instead, listen to your brain.

128GB iPhone 6

If you’ve had experiences in the recent past with old smartphones where 64GB just wasn’t enough for all of your apps, music, movies, TV shows, etc., then yes, going for a 128GB model may be a good idea, but that applies to a low percentage of users, and most iPhone users won’t use that much storage.

We’ve all been there at some point where we go ahead and bite the bullet and buy a higher-capacity iPhone with the notion that we’ll probably fill it up eventually with apps and other files, but it never cracks the 50% full mark.

For example, I chose a 32GB iPhone 5s last year when the device was launched thinking that I’d most likely fill it up with my music and a ton of games. However, I quickly discovered that most of my files are stored in the cloud, and I hardly ever played games on my iPhone to justify having so many of them installed.

iPhone-6-pair

I learned my lesson once the iPhone 6 rolled around and got a 16GB version for $199, saving myself the extra $100 that I would’ve spent if I went with the next-highest storage capacity.

64GB Is the Perfect Amount

Since the 16GB iPhone 6 model is too small and the 128GB version is mostly overkill, that leaves the 64GB storage option as the perfect Goldilocks option for most users. The 64GB iPhone 6 costs $299, while the 64GB iPhone 6 Plus costs $399, and this is after signing a new two-year contract. You’ll have to more to buy the phones outright without a contract.

Of course, if you’re a very casual user that doesn’t have a lot of apps or files, then 16GB might be enough, but if you like to play games on your iPhone and listen to a lot of music, the 64GB iPhone 6 will be right up your alley, and you shouldn’t need more than 64GB.

iPhone 5s

Plus, the 64GB iPhone is a steal now, considering that the same cost would only get you a 32GB iPhone last year. However, if the starting $299 price tag is still not what you’re willing to pay, take a look at the iPhone 5s, which starts at $99 for the 16GB model and just $149 for the 32GB version. 32GB is the sweet spot for most users, and the iPhone 5s is the latest iPhone that offers that storage capacity option.

The 128GB iPhone 6 shouldn’t be completely dismissed, but it’s mostly reserved for those rare users who really need the space. Music lovers who have over 50GB of music would most likely benefit from a 128GB iPhone, and photographers would probably want a 128GB iPhone 6 as well, seeing as they’ll take a lot of pictures and store them on their iPhones as a mobile photo portfolio of sorts.

Sorry but only an idiot buys a smartphone to use only part of its features. I do photography, video, editing, gaming, sharing, music, random Apps, writing you name it. I passed that 64 gigs on my droid ages ago. 3 memory cards later I’m STILL regretting not going full retard with the storage. Trying to tell people whats best to do is not the job of the media. Many people dont keep their phones for longer than two years. I keep mine until it stops being my bitch. I need the space. I’d buy 500 gigs if it existed.

I’m sorry, this is a stupid article. Everyone is different. Obviously anyone who has a guy feeling to buy a phone with more storage then hey probably have a reason to have that feeling. If you’re just a phone user then no, you don’t need it, but anyone who uses their phone as an ipod(a LOT of people) or a video/gaming device will want a bigger phone.

I got my iPhone 6 Plus with 128Gb because my old iPhone 5 with 64Gb wasn’t enough for my music, app, videos, photos and all that bullshit.

In general I think this article rings true for me. I had the iPhone 5 64GB and have recently purchased an iPhone 5S 64GB. Every now and again you have to do a sense check and think about what apps you are actually using on your phone. In some cases I’ve purchased apps so I feel obliged to have them on my phone even if they are infrequently or never accessed. Have a serious think and, if necessary, write-off those $1, $2, $5 apps you don’t use. Perhaps you only access them on your iPad, that’s fair enough. Doing this, along with transferring off your photo collections to your PC/Mac and pruning your music collection e.g. keep only compilation albums on your phone, really helps reduce your memory usage and prevents any urge for memory upgrade each year.

So basically because 64 is perfect for the author he/she believes this is perfect for everyone.

To author… They’ve been selling 160 gb iPods for years… And who do ya think bought them?

  9. Roberto

    10/12/2014 at 6:04 pm

This is pretty subjective. The 128GB is the perfect storage size. Also, don’t listen to your “brain,” because what you refer to is merely your conscious. In reality, your subconscious is much more effective at making decisions. In this light, go with your “gut” and don’t miss out on storage capacity!

Stupid advice, from someone who clearly underutilises their iPhone! Folks, to get the most out of your expensive iPhone, you SHOULD be using media a lot! Movies. Link to TV via AppleTV. Music. Photos and videos. And with HD video recording of all those parties and holidays you will soon run out of space. In fact that’s precicely why I upgraded from iP5s 64G to iP6 128G even though I really liked the iP5s physical size. So folks, take my tip, igmore this ignorant writer and go for the highest GB you can afford. Unless of course like the author you plan to underutilise your phone, which begs the question of why you want a smartphone in the first place.

Wow. Let me re-write this article in 1 sentence. ..

The reason you should not buy the 128gb is because you might not need it.

    So many compelling points! ;)

    I got iPhone 6 with 128GB replacing from iPhone4s with 64GB.
My iTunes has about 200GB and another 30GB at my pictures. Meaning only 30% is in my iPhone as I need some free space. It is not enough even at this new iPhone.

    10/29/2014 at 8:02 pm

Erm, I have an iPhone 5 64GB and it ran out of space like a month after I got it. I still have to keep on deleting photos, music and apps everyday in order just to take one measly photo. It’s so annoying.

And yes, I’m constantly listening to music, taking tons of photos, and playing games on my iPhone. I don’t have a PS, iPod and don’t even watch TV any more so my iPhone is my only source of entertainment.

I need WAY more than 128GB, they should release a 1TB iPhone. Don’t listen to this article, its ridiculous.

Bill Gates said 640KB was enough, only difference here is the author is a broke ass mofo and doesn’t look like it’s gonna change anytime soon. This article is a waste of web space.

I have had to delete a number of apps, photos, videos and music several times on my 64MB and that is the only reason I feel compelled to upgrade to a 6 right now.

I got 128 after 3 1/2 years of being irritated with all the juggling I had to do on my 16gb. Is it full? No, but I guarantee you it will be at some point and right now I don’t have to mess with anything. If I had 64 it would be back to juggling. Tons of music and a whole years worth of photos…I wish they had a bigger option even my iPod is 160gb and that’s being selective with what’s on it I wish I had a phone that would render it obsolete. Yes you can stream music but it drains your battery faster when away from wifi plus eats up data, sync & be happy music lovers!

This is a silly discussion. It’s impossible to say one is better than the other. Some people have enough with 64gb, some need 128gb. It’s like saying well you don’t need a big car because a small one will also do. Just ridiculous…

Love my 64 gb iphone 4s and it was/is always full to the point of having to empty things out. I know for a fact I am going for 128 gb 6 plus. I use my phone for EVERYTHING. So yeah going for it. I don’t like keeping all my stuff in the cloud…my cloud is full as well though.

  25. Ross

    12/10/2014 at 9:36 am

Well all those people who need huge storage in excess of 128GB for media files, research OTG (on the go) function… you will be glad you did (or did not.. depending on how dependent you are on IPhones). The only reason that you have to buy the largest capacity iphone is because apple doesn’t want to give you any choice).

  26. michelle

    12/11/2014 at 6:19 pm

While everyone on here is complaining about someone telling them what phone storage to buy I am sitting here stunned that here in Australia we have to pay $1,129 if we want to largest storage available on the new iphone 6!

  27. Sid

    12/28/2014 at 12:51 pm

Crap post! That’s your preference. I already have a 64gb & have to keep deleting apps & music to fill up with their respective latest. I’d go 128gb any day

  28. DL

    01/02/2015 at 2:12 pm

Here’s a slightly different perspective. When I first got my iphone 4, it was used for most of my photography. But as I have advanced my photography skills, i find my iphone is my backup option now with my DSLR and point and shoots being my first options. I even use some video cameras to snap some photos as well since I have them. So they means less usage of the iPhones storage capacity.

Second point: these days, as soon as I get home, I move my photos (and video) to my memory cards to my computer immediately. I do the same for my phones if they are used as well. Just too risky to lose your memory cards, phones or get things corrupted.

I don’t delete stuff right though. If I have the extra storage space, I’ll use it. At the moment, I am split between the 64 and 128 iphone 6. I think the 64 will be sufficient for how i do things but 128 is tempting.

As a mother, I have the 128 GB. Between movies, music, pictures, videos, and games, it’s a no brainier. Just because it didn’t work for you doesn’t mean it isn’t reasonable for anyone else. This is such a biased article!

I got the 128gb iPhone 6. I’ve downloaded quite a few videos and I am not even close to 30gb used. I should of gotten a 64gb phone instead.

  32. Eric

    08/25/2015 at 12:04 am

Yeah right, this article is completely bias. 64gb is not enough for me. If it is enough for you than lucky you, you don’t have as much data as other people do – like myself.

  33. ldksparda

    08/27/2015 at 2:41 pm

I’m an IT guy in my company, and my experience with my users is that 64GB is usually enough for people with the habit of backing up their data to their PCs or cloud, or that every quarter delete the apps that are not use anymore.

If you like to clean your phone every now and then because you don’t feel confident with having a lot of data on a mobile device that could be easily lost or stolen or just don’t like to have a mess in you phone with a lot of files (photos, music, apps, etc.) then 64Gb should be enough for you.
But if backing up and organizing data is a pain in the ass for you or prefer the idea of having a main all-purpose device where you can have access to everything, no matter if you don’t have internet acces or only check all that data once a month (or even a year), then 128GB can be your option.

This last one is usually the case because most of the mobile users are not technology people or are so dependant of their phone that the sole idea of not having that last photo or music would be intolerable no matter if they truly never use that content. Is a topic about psycology and materialism, and apple’s marketing guys knows it, and they use it against all of us :P

Matter of opinion, in my case, I was gonna get the 128gb, but they were out of stock on the day when I was getting 6s, so I’ve bought 64gb, went on holiday and guess what. 55Mb remaining in a middle of holidays Storing up everything on cloud now (fortunately there’s a wifi on hotel in Sri Lanka with pretty fine connection) and as soon as I get home, I’m gonna get 128GB and give this one to my mom

I’m glad I got the 128GB, mine has been full several times and I’ve had to edit things off. I’m looking forward to the 256GB models to eventually come out!
