Why You Shouldn’t Wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Published

on

For months now, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumors have waged on, depicting a high-end and enticing smartphone set for release sometime later this year. And while the Galaxy Note 3 is going to be worth waiting for for many people, there are also several reasons why some consumers may not want to wait for the Galaxy Note 3 release.

Last year, Samsung unveiled its second-generation Samsung Galaxy Note in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The device was an upgrade over the Galaxy Note in many areas including the design, the size of the screen, the S Pen stylus, the software both Google and Samsung made, the processing power and the amount of carrier options that were on the table to consumers.

The Galaxy Note 3 is said to be coming later this year.

The Galaxy Note 3 is said to be coming later this year.

Unlike the original Galaxy Note, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 arrived on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon right from the get-go, making it one of the best Android smartphone options on the market. Needless to say, it’s clear that Samsung has another Galaxy Note up its sleeve and thanks to rumors, we have begun to piece together the make up of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Thus far, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is shaping up to be a worthy successor to the Galaxy Note 2. On paper, the device appears to have somewhere between a 5.7-inch to 6-inch display with 1080p resolution, a quad-core processor that is either the Snapdragon 800 or the Exynos 5 Octa processor, a 13MP camera, a Galaxy S4 design, and a launch date sometime in September, likely at IFA 2013 in Berlin at the beginning of that month.

The device is shaping up to be a juggernaut and one that should help continue Samsung’s run as the top phablet vendor on the planet. As we’ve said, there are plenty of reasons to wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. However, there is always a flip side.

Here, we take a look at the reasons why consumers shouldn’t wait for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and its host of new features.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is Still a Great

Plain and simple, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is still a great device and will likely be suitable for a majority of those in the market for a large screen Samsung smartphone with a stylus.

The Galaxy Note 2’s 720p display likely won’t be as good as the one found on the Galaxy Note 3, but it’s still good nonetheless. Same goes for the camera. It’s not going to be as good, but it will do the job for those that don’t need the top of the line features. The Galaxy Note 2 is slim, it has a removable back and microSD card slot, it also has an ergonomic S Pen with a host of useful apps.

Furthermore, Samsung will likely update it with software not just from the Galaxy S4 but also from the Galaxy Note 3 as well which means that its life will be prolonged beyond the Galaxy Note 3’s arrival.

Keep in mind, this is a phone that is less than a year old. It also remains one of the best smartphones available on the market and buyers wouldn’t be wrong in adopting one instead of waiting for the Galaxy Note 3.

Samsung Galaxy S4 is Good and Similar

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is one reason not to wait and the Samsung Galaxy S4 is another reason not to wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Samsung has brought a few things to the Galaxy S series that will likely entice those that are looking for Galaxy Note like qualities from a smartphone.

First, the screen is 5-inches in size. That’s only .5 inches smaller than the display on the Galaxy Note 2 and likely around .7 to an inch smaller than the Galaxy Note 3. Indeed the Galaxy S4 display is big.

Second, Samsung has brought a number of Galaxy Note software features to the Galaxy S4 including the Multi-Window View feature and Air View, which allows users to hover over content to get a preview. With the Galaxy Note, users need to use the S Pen stylus to hover over content. On the Galaxy S4, users need only use their finger.

So what this means is that users will need to heavily weigh two things. Screen size and the stylus. The Galaxy S4 screen size is only a bit smaller and it can do many of the things that the Galaxy Note series can, including some features that were once unique to the S Pen.

Cheaper Options

With the Samsung Galaxy Note series reigning supreme, Samsung and the Galaxy Note 3 carriers will likely keep the price of the new Galaxy Note around the familiar $299.99 on-contract price point. For many, that’s an expensive price tag and one that will be hard to swallow if it indeed arrives. Fortunately, there are and will be cheaper options in the build up to the Galaxy Note 3’s arrival.

For instance, the Galaxy Note 2 price has dropped significantly since it was first released back in October and November. On some carriers, it’s sitting in the bargain bin. Other big screen smartphones like the LG Optimus G Pro are also fairly inexpensive and are viable options thanks to some heavy duty hardware and some useful software.

The Optimus G Pro is an alternative worth looking at.

The Optimus G Pro is an alternative worth looking at.

The Galaxy S4 is also cheap through retailers and as we’ve pointed out, is a solid alternative for those looking to get a big screen smartphone made by Samsung. Also, the HTC One price is continually dropping and it’s a device that prospective Galaxy Note 3 buyers should take a look at as well.

Can’t/Don’t Want to Wait

Galaxy Note 2 Launch Date

The Galaxy Note 3 launch date could arrive in Berlin as well.

For many people, waiting simply isn’t an option. And while it would be nice to see the Galaxy Note 3 launch and release come in July, that’s simply not going to happen. All signs point to a launch and possible a release in September which means that those who own a broken smartphone will likely want to make a move now.

As we’ve said, there are a ton of other options on the table now and waiting three months or more with a broken smartphone is going to be torture. There is always a chance that the Galaxy Note 3 won’t live up to expectations meaning the wait won’t have been worth it.

Read: Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Release Pegged for Late September.

Those who can’t spend a ton of money on a smartphone also likely won’t want to wait as the Galaxy Note 3 is very likely going to be as expensive as it always has been.

With the release likely coming in the fall, those that don’t want to wait will simply not want to wait, particularly those looking for the Verizon Galaxy Note 3. Verizon is typically last in line which means that we could see a release in October or November, nearly six months from now. For the patient type, it may be worth the wait, but again, there is a plethora of options on the table now.

You Don’t Want a Bigger Screen

Rumors suggest that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will have a bigger screen than the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, possibly a full inch bigger than the display on the older model. This isn’t confirmed, but it’s clear that Samsung will need to make a move to separate the Galaxy Note series from the Galaxy S series, the latter of which has seen its screen size bumped to 5-inches.

Now, the screen size increase doesn’t necessarily mean that the Galaxy Note 3 will be gigantic compared to the Galaxy Note 2. It will likely only be a bit bigger with Samsung increasing the height while slimming the device down. However, the overall footprint should be a tad bigger and if bigger than the Galaxy Note 2 doesn’t sound appetizing, it’s probably time to move on.

You Don’t Like Plastic

Those that don’t care for plastic designs aren’t going to want to wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The Galaxy Note 3 is heavily rumored to have a design similar to the Galaxy S4 which likely means that it will carry a plastic design, like many Samsung devices do. For many, this won’t be an issue but for those looking for a premium design, like those found on the HTC One or iPhone 5, it isn’t likely to be found on the Galaxy Note 3.

The Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S4. Rumors point to a Galaxy Note 3 with a larger display and 1080P HD resolution.

The Galaxy Note 3 will likely have a plastic design.

Samsung is said to be exploring metal designs though they have all been rumored for next year.

    “You Don’t Like Plastic”

Thats right! And let’s face it, even if Samsung noticed Sony Xperia Z Ultra’s awesome design, they didn’t have enough time to change theirs for the Note 3. Note 3’s design is already decided(an enlarged SGS4 probably), if it’s going to be launched in autumn.

HTC One Max could be worthy of the wait, but I don’t think that even it could beat the Z Ultra, only Sony’s own Honami could, if you don’t mind the smaller display.

I love the Note 2 and have not regretted one bit since ditching the iPhone 5. I had been an iPhone user since the 1st generation. Now holding an iPhone and using its tiny screen seems unbearable when I have a 5.5 inch screen to enjoy. The features arr much better too. I thought I would need to buy a Samsung TV to be able to stream videos or share pics from my phone but my Sharp Aquos uses the AllShare feature on the phone, awsome!!! Sadly, I will say goodbye to my Note 2 when the Note 3 arrives for more processing power and screen size, can’t hardly wait.

I’m a real estate agent and can’t wait to get the note 3 to replace my iphone4. The note 2 would be a fine alternative, but I’m a patient man. The S pen will make signing contracts on the fly easier.

I’m thinking more and more the Note 3 will be just a bigger version of the S4 with a better CPU and no other changes. Sort of disappointing if thats the case and not worth waiting for.

To all those complaining about the note 3 is going to be a bigger version of sg4 shut up you sound like idiots if you like the past note devices then you have no reason to complain if you look at the notes history devices and match them up with the galaxy s lines youll see there the same phone but with a stylus, bigger and software upgrades through out the year gs2=original note, gs3 = note 2, and coming soon to shelves near you gs4= note 3 with more software upgrades that the gs4 didn’t get

By the way worst article read in awhile you could’ve named other phablets to buy sonys new z ultra HTC one max amongst others that are actually gonna give note 3 a challenge & to give reason not to buy and how are you gonna say well note 2 is not gonna be as good as the note 3 of course not sounds like you wrote this article in 10 min with a bunch of others as you keep writting like we’ve said before and it doesn’t help that at the bottom of your article it says “Adam is an editor based in San Francisco, California who loves his iPhone 5, iPad third-generation and Samsung Galaxy Nexus. ” sounds like a fan boy hating

I guess you, like so many readers, can’t believe a writer can understand and write about more than one side of any debate. I believe no reviewer is worth reading if they cannot give arguments both for and against whatever they are reviewing.

I just want to note that I wish Samsung would add a detachable bluetooth ear phone on their phablets. One that is ready to use upon detachment and is placed within the contour shape on the side of the phablet body.
It will not need a lot of battery juice unlike the typical earphone because once you’re done talking with it, it will go right back to the phablet and be recharged. When a typical earphone is being recharged you are recharging its usage calling time and also its resting time (rest times tend to be longer at most times). With the detachable earphone idea you are only recharging the usage calling time which translates to less battery power and less time needed to recharge back in replacing the juice that was used up. Having said that you will not have an issue of having an uncharged earphone and don’t have to spend extra time recharging it as well and does not have to find a place to recharge it. If Samsung maintains about having a removable battery on their phablets then one can simply choose to bring an extra battery.  In the mean time the ongoing advancements is trending towards less power drain capability type of hardwares and more juiced up battery types.  Not to mention phablets can accommodate a larger piece of battery which can hold more power.  Having mention trends – there’s more texting now than phone calling. With regard to uncomfortableness on the ear usage this will get better during trial and error in the development stage – and by the way the earphone will not be on your ear at most times as it will rest back on the phablet when not in use. When competition kicks in you’ll see several awesome choices instead. There will be competition with this feature especially when it start to be applied to laptops (business laptops too) and who knows what other type of machines. LG have done it on a cell phone but it was not as advanced as it could be today. Samsung could revive this earphone feature and use it on a phablet (which is more pertinent). Samsung did a good job reviving the stylus pen now dubbed the S-Pen. I would love to see them do the same on the earphone. You won’t look like a geek anymore.

I recievedt the note 2 for testing back in January and bought myself one. Bottom line is this is still a top device that wont reach maturation anytime soon. Espexially if they roll out a couple more updates. Ill be looking at the note 3 capabilities closely; 1080p screen doesnt over match 720 when it comes to video playback. I compared two same video clips of Pacific Rim on my s4 and my note 2 and could not tell whuch was better. And I ran the test twice. The only trump card for 1080 is whiter whites with text. But curious how the octa 5 will speed up the overall performance; ive tested alot of smartphones and can say there really isnt much of a need for cutting edge hardware for most activities. Dual core and quadcore can equally get the job done. Unless of course you plan to use your smartphone as a desktop computer; Games will not need the service of the latest quadcore because developers are not creating content to tax the processors in phones. App development will make the new phones worth getting because benchmark tests only indicate what the phone is capable of if it had the software.
Id love to see maybe four or five phones made availabe and focus on taking advantage of the engines in these devices. Ala ps3 and xbox. Otherwise, it makes little difference what you have.

I agree, even if they just start out with solar charging to do simple things like making phone calls, texts, viewing pics etc… From there, they can see what works, doesn’t work and eventually per-fect it!

Solar panels on the backs of calculators? How do they EVER charge? :) Surely you meant the panels were on the FRONT of the calculators? That’s the way they’ve been in any solar calculator I’ve used.

i love my gnote 2.. despite the many features and processors that it brags to have all i really care about is

    1. The screen size. I do a lot of reading of emails, news, web surfing, and reading of ebooks. I am just glad I do not have to strain my eyes.

    2. My nieces and nephews play on my phone a lot. The games are just absolutely fantastic on the note 2 (on a 5.5 inch screen as compared to a 4.0 inch screen).

    3. I love the way my pictures and video come out. I also love watching my favorite sprint shows, netflix movies, crackle, hulu and even Google Play Movies on this phone. The only thing I really wish is that the phone has a stand just like how the HTC EVO had.

    4. People complain about how big it is and they can’t hold it in their hand, blah blah blah. I put my phone in my laptop bag. I carry my laptop bag with me wherever I go. So carrying it in my pocket, or whatever is totally not an issue. I have no problem putting it in my pocket anyway.

    5. I love the multi-view feature. I’m emailing someone while on facebook at the same time. Or I am watching a youtube video while doing something else.

The above were some of the uses for the GNote 2. Being that I have come along way on screen sizes on phones, I started with an HTC 3.5 inch screen, then upgrading to a 4.0, now on a 5.5 makes me not want to go back to anything smaller than what I have now. Now that the Gnote 3 is almost here, whether it is a 5.7 or a 6.0, I would gladly get it for just that reason alone. It just means I will have a bigger screen and I won’t have to fish out extra money for a 8 inch screen tablet, a 7 inch, or a 10 inch for that matter.

Now I wish however that when we get this phone, that we ought to get a 32gb if we’re going to pay 299.00. I thought that paying the 299.00 for a 16gb was a rip off. I don’t care that we had the use of a sd card.. but really?

I had the Note 1 and recently got the Note 2! I too absolutely LOVE my Note 2. There would have to be something pretty spectacular, other than the size, for me to ditch my 2 for a 3. I truly feel my Note 2 is superior to any other smartphone on the market!!!

I bought my Note 2 in December. After an upgrade this summer, my Note keyboard has a terrible lag. It can take 8-10 seconds to pop up when I want to email, Google, whatever. Samsung can’t do anything. They don’t know what the issue is-i’ve even had the best buy Samsung guy look at it. The only thing left is a factory reset, and there is no guarantee it will work. I’ve even tried different keyboards. Has yours done this? Otherwise, (and even so), love my Note 2! Since I’m a woman, mine goes in my purse. But, there ARE holsters for it, on Amazon.

… I will be buying a Note 3 no matter what lol. I will not buy a note 2 when a note 3 is very close. thats why i waited to buy any cell phone was to see how good the note 3 is. I never buy older products when they make new ones for a reason. The S pen is far greater it looks than any S-pen they have released. Its simply the biggest phone out there for my big cellphone experience and it has a really nice pen which I don’t have to use… but I would be silly not to.
my friend has note 1. I like it a lot. an the note 2 an s4 are better than his. an note 3 better than them all. its faster more battery life , thinner, lighter, bigger, more software updates. an 4.3 andriod out the box. no other andriod device comes like that an does it this good :). The cell phone case material…. wow never ever really even complained about that ever in any phone. in fact I like the maertial on the cellphone stock… not to mention you can buy custom cases for any phone 3rd party anyhow if you really care about case material so much they sell them on amazon all the time for 5-20$ which is nothing. I will use the Note 3 case sleeve also to protect my phone case. as well. Thanks to Samsung this will be the best phone I ever bought!
