Will Battery Life Improvement Be the Year’s Biggest Story Behind the Stories?

Published

We’re getting close to that point in the year where every publication, every website, and every blogger comes out with their ideas on the biggest stories of the year. This year has certainly been full of big stories in the world of gadgets and mobile computing and I’ll have a post in a few weeks that tells you what I think had the most impact.

But, after seeing this Apple commercial making the rounds this morning it reminded me of the single biggest advance that has certainly improved my life this year, and that’s longer battery life. The Apple commercial is touting the iPhone 4’s improved battery life and I can certainly attest to the fact that it is much improved over the 3GS. The iPad also offers pretty amazing battery life. As a heavy iPad user, I’ve never once felt like I need to be looking for an opportunity to plug in and frequently go a couple of days without plugging in. In both instances I can repeat what I have said earlier, Apple is raising the bar on battery life expectations.

Sumocat pointed out how Apple can make its claims stick and others can’t. I’ve been expecting to see others begin to change but so far I’m not seeing that.

The MacBook Air (at least the 13 inch) seems to offer improvements there as well according to Xavier. Other manufacturers in every sector are trying to reach for the standard that Apple set and apparently continues to set.

Improved battery life gets talked about quite a bit and it should. In this day of “mobile, mobile, mobile” it is still a big consideration. The only thing bigger deals with connectivity and carrier related issues.

So, I’m anxious to see how many “biggest stories of the year” posts feature battery life at the top, or if at all. For me, its huge. How about you?

Battery life is huge, but there’s just too much fibbing when it comes to the battery ‘spec’ in most devices.

Well… I don’t know about Apple ‘raising the bar.’ It’s been there all along. I have a Lenovo ultraportable from 2006 with an extra battery — that’s easily 12-14 hours of constant use.
