Will You Deposit Your Check by Cell Phone?

Published

on

usaaUSAA Bank is updating its iPhone app so that customers will be able to deposit a check via their phone. The deal is you take a picture of both sides of the check and it goes into their deposit system. The New York   Times has an article explaining USAA’s move to this and if the technology works as advertised, I’m sure it could be a nice time saver for many.

With many banks having developing and having apps for their customers to access their accounts is this the wave of the future? Will we all have to become good photographers with cell phone camera to make a deposit? I’m sure there will be other options, but color me skeptical. I’ve never been one to make a deposit using an ATM so I doubt I’ll go this route either.

How about you? Is this something you could see yourself using?

Considering I’m on Sprint and I haven’t cashed a check in quite some time I won’t be able to take advantage of this. When I did have the occasional check to deposit, I used BoA’s ATM deposit and had no issues. It was great on those late nights, weekends or when you were in a small town and all they had was an ATM.

I agree with your ‘photographer’ comment. Most people have horrible, discombobulated MySpace pages that are chocked full of less-than-great pics. Same goes for Facebook, but they can’t ruin the entire experience with sub-par artistic page designs.

Where was I? Oh yeah. If anything, this would have been a great time for some company to step in and offer new checks that used the traditional format with one of the new barcodes. That way they can just snap the barcode which contains all the information needed to deposit the amount. Of course there would be security concerns so all of that information would be verified electronically. I could go on in more detail, but I’m not getting paid for my ideas. Damn, someone probably ripped my idea off already.

I’d LOVE something like this. I’ve got two banks- Sovereign, and ING Direct. All of my direct deposit stuff goes into the ING Direct. I just keep the Sovereign around in case of emergency, since ING Direct doesn’t use checks at all (ie you can’t even order checks). However, when I moved to Massachusetts from New Jersey, I found none of the Sovereign Banks up here let me actually deposit checks or withdraw my money unless I use an ATM. (Supposedly it’s because they use different computer systems, and eventually it’s going to be upgraded to the same system, but I was told that two years ago.)

Something like this would save me quite a bit of trouble, because it’s always a hassle that takes a few extra days to deposit anything.

I’m an iPhone user and USAA customer (both banking and insurance, and they’re truly outstanding in both regards), and I’ll absolutely use this.

Remember, many of USAA’s customers are military and widely dispersed, and the bank does not have branches all over the place. Now I can deposit checks without mailing them in! Why should the bank pay for branches when they can reimburse us for ATM use for withdrawals and allow us to deposit checks remotely? This is a great idea and a long time in coming, IMHO.

Been doing it with Chase for about a year with zero problems. They credit the account at the end of the day the check is deposited. Works well on my HTC Rezound. If you do this, make sure you have a higher-resolution camera on your phone because the detail matters!
