Windows Mobile to Offer Over The Air Updates?

Published

on

windows-mobile-logo It may be a ways down the road, but let’s hope this does indeed mean something for Windows Mobile customers. Long Zheng of istartedsomething is linking to a Microsoft job announcement in which they appear to be looking for someone to come on board to help get an over the air (OTA) updating system in place.

Have you wished to see your Windows Mobile phone with new features ““magically” show up without you buying a new one? Do you want to see greater and better quality and cool software delivered to your love ones’ Windows phones from just a click? If this is your dream, this is a place for you. Come join us to make this dream into reality! With the mobile industry’s strong growth and several competitors playing in the field, we are going to have a challenging but fun time to show customers what Windows phone can become in the next few years.

I’m guessing this is still a ways off (job announcements don’t necessarily translate into action) and it certainly won’t show up in WinMo 6.5. Whenever it does show up, it would sure be a bonus. Of course this will not be an easy task given how the carriers use and tweak the OS for their various phones.

If I recall Winmo 6 (maybe even 5) had a built in update app that supposedly checked for, err, updates. It never did anything though so I guess it remained an unimplemented function.
