World Turns Upside Down: Lenovo Allows CTRL Key Switching

Published

nov5lenov2354254I’m a big fan of Lenovo Thinkpad keyboards. One thing you have to adjust to if you’re coming from another machine is that the CTRL key is not the left-most key on the bottom row. For some folks this is a real gotcha and brain burn because they want that CTRL key at that location. Instead on ThinkPads, you find the FN key there.

Well, going forward with new ThinkPads, Lenovo will allow you to switch those keys in the BIOS, making some folks happy along the way.

Lenovo has allowed this swap for quite some time using a software utility setting in Windows. Putting the setting in the BIOS is going one step further, but is by no means as earth shattering as Engadget makes it out to be. Besides, I like having the function key on the far side. It puts the control key closer to the main keyboard and I’m more likely to use the control key while I’m actively typing and the function key when I’m just trying to turn off the screen or put the computer to sleep.

I wasn’t aware of the Windows swap function, echostryk, but this was definitely something that caused me a lot of pain when I first laid hands on an X60 Tablet. Luckily, the rest of the system was so good that I eventually just got used to it.

Anywho, this is good news and a good business decision on their part IMHO.
