Xbox One: True Cost Tops $1,100 in First 2 Years

Published

on

This week Microsoft announced that the Xbox One will come out sometime in November for $499. But to get the most out of the console, gamers will have to spend quite a lot more than that, topping $1,000 in the first two years.

Gamers will have to spend a bit more than $499 on release day to use the console, and even more money over time. The Xbox One will likely be around for a long time, but for this we’ll just look at the total cost of the console over the first two years.

Xbox One Price

While the Xbox One will cost $499 to start, the console won’t play any current Xbox 360 games, meaning gamers have to start their gaming library from scratch. Microsoft showed off a number of exclusive Xbox One games during its E3 press conference, so there are a number of titles to choose from, but starting a new game library isn’t cheap.

Xbox One

Xbox One Games Aren’t Free

Each Xbox One game will cost $60, just like current Xbox 360 games. To make the console useful on day one gamers will have to buy at least one game for that price. One game won’t last most players two years, however.

A 2008 report from Gamasutra showed that, in the first 23 months of owning an Xbox 360, most gamers purchased an average of 6.6 games for the console. Assuming Xbox One gamers buy disc-based games at a similar rate, and rounding up the numbers, gamers may buy about seven games for the console in the first two years.

Seven new games over the course of two years (leaving out free-to-play and indie games) will cost gamers $420, almost as much as the console itself.

Xbox One Accessories Aren’t Free

Many of the games on the new console are multiplayer-focused, which means gamers will want to play them online. Microsoft requires an Xbox Live Gold subscription for players who want to play games online. The subscription costs another $60 per year, or $120 for two years.

The good news is that Microsoft will give out free games to Xbox Live Gold subscribers soon. It’s not clear if that program will extend to Xbox One users, however.

While online gaming is nice, sometimes it’s better to just play with someone else on the same couch. While that’s easy with Kinect-focused games, other games will require controllers for each other player. Many people can get away with having just one extra controller, which will cost them $60, the same price as a single game.

Over the course of two years with seven games, two years of Xbox Live Gold and just one extra controller, the Xbox One will cost gamers a total of $1100.

Xbox_One_controller

The total cost is expensive, but gamers can try to lower the price by not paying for Xbox Live Gold and buying games used instead of new. The downside is the Xbox One loses a lot of functionality without Xbox Live Gold, and publishers can restrict which games gamers can buy used.

Xbox One Add-Ons Add Up

There are a few optional accessories that gamers may want to buy for their new console that will add to the overall cost.

Xbox One accessories aren't cheap.

Xbox One accessories aren’t cheap.

While many gamers connect their console to the Internet, some don’t yet. The Xbox One requires an Internet connection once every 24 hours, and some may have difficulty getting the console to connect online. Those users may have to buy a new wireless router or repeater to reach a particular room in their house (also, the console doesn’t support the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi spec, with is the fastest option). A high-quality router will cost users about $100, though prices will vary based on the quality of the device.

The Xbox One will include a headset for Xbox Live communication, but not every gamer will want their headset attached to their controller. Microsoft currently offers a Bluetooth headset for the Xbox 360, and may sell one for the Xbox One as well. If it follows the same pricing strategy as the current Xbox 360 Bluetooth headset, it will likely cost around $50.

Finally, while some gamers have great sound systems for their TV and console that can shake an entire room, some prefer a more solitary sound experience. Turtle Beach already announced two new headsets for the Xbox One that gamers may want to pick up: the Ear Force XO Four and Ear Force XO Seven. Neither headset has a price yet, but $100 is a good starting point for most gaming headsets.

With all of the optional accessories the true cost of the Xbox One jumps up to $1,350.

As the console is a few months out, prices may change or sales can make some items cheaper. The true cost with seven new disc-based games and two years of Xbox Live Gold likely won’t change, but the cost with accessories can vary greatly depending on what the gamer wants or needs.

Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job Ive had. Last Monday I got a new Alfa Romeo from bringing in $7778. I started this 9 months ago and practically straight away started making more than $83 per hour. I work through this link, https://Bling6.com

Actually, the two free games ends when the Xbox One comes out. And no games are coming out with the Xbox one, unless you buy a bundle, which just makes the system $560 instead of $500. Also, Sony has been doing the free games every month since PS+ started, and those were actually NEW games that had come out within the past year– not games that were $8 used and 4+ years old (AC2 and Halo 3).

Why pile on with this article? Any new console is going to cost more when you factor in games and accessories. That is how these companies make money. News flash, the PS4 will cost more than $399 in the first two years! I mean I bought a Wii U at launch for $350, but I bought games, controllers and other accessories that have brought that cost up to over $700.

Logic is lost on some people. Apparently some people think when they buy something, they are entitled to everything that can be used on/with it for free.

More slander against MS. I guess bashing Microsoft is in these days. . . If only people could think for themselves and realize that the Xbox One is actually pretty innovative. This is coming from someone whose family owns 3 PS3’s.

      06/16/2013 at 8:19 pm

It’s not slander when it’s factual. And bashing MS is “in these days”? Were you born yesterday? I can’t believe you’re old enough to write but didn’t know MS bashing has been a thing since Windows became a mandatory upgrade for DOS. Probably before that even. MS bashing is “in” whenever they f*kc up & lose touch with reality. Which is pretty much any given time in history. And this is coming from a guy who has a Zune, both Xboxes and 2 Winmo phones. XBone is their worst product to date. They deserve every character of bad press they’re getting these days. They can get praised when they deserve it. I’ll be in the corner holding my breath with Kevin, waiting for that day to come. Do not resuscitate.

Of course you need to pay for games, and accessory’s same as the PS4, You first have to buy the console which is $400 then buy a PS+ Membership which is around £40-$60 a year if you choose the 1 year option, Then you have to buy the games that will probably be the same as the Xbox One Price of games then you need to buy accessory’s which will cost money as well

not to mention you will have to buy 4 sets of motions controllers (like 200 bones) for the PS4 if you want everyone to be able to do something even close to similar the Kinect can do for all four people, which is already include in the price at launch. So for PS4 to do what Xbox can do at launch you will need to spent upwards of 600 dollars. The list of things Xbox one will do the PS4 can’t is pretty long as well. I’m not sure how PS4 is a better deal? I’ve already downloaded my first free game (fable III) on Xbox live, which will play on the new Xbox since it’s digital, and am getting 9 more free games in the coming months, thank you Microsoft. What is Sony giving everyone, except paying for online gameplay now?

    • STICK

      06/16/2013 at 11:28 am

You’re not too bright, XBuyer. Fable 3 won’t play on the new Xbox. Microsoft has already said no digital titles carry over. Sony has been giving people games with PS+ since they started it. MS is only giving away games now because Sony has been doing it.

      • XBuyer

        06/16/2013 at 11:52 am

Since you’re so “bright,” I’m assuming you’ve heard of an emulator, right? I could be wrong though. They are giving these games away in digital format, purposely, so you can play them on Xbox One. What games has Sony given away? Will Sony have 300,000 servers online at launch capable of cloud computation for gaming? Xbox One is simply better and cable of doing vastly more the PS4, people will soon realize this.

Matt you’re just plain special, your parents probably tell you so all the time. Xbox 360 had hundreds of Xbox (original) titles that were eventually made available to play. There is no reason they can’t/won’t do this. The Xbox will most likely be subsidized through cable companies and sell a ridiculous amount of consoles. Sony is just lagging behind and everyone know it, they will continue to play catch up.

You guys moan about thinking for yourselves while you’re swallowing gulp after gulp of the marketing hogwash MS is spoonfeeding you. Grow up. This is not a consumer friendly console. This is not what we all were hoping for from a new Xbox. This is a device MS can use to turn us into the product being sold. And you want to pay them for it. You are literally getting owned if you buy one.

Alright, since there are so many people here that are uninformed about the ps4:

You honestly don’t NEED to buy any games after purchasing a PS4. The console is 400, playstation+ is 60. With taxes it’s about 500 all together. You do not need to buy games right off the bat because you get 12 free ones when signing up for plus. Not to mention you get around 4 big name games for free every month along with that.

Xb1 doesn’t give out free games every month. They’re giving xbox 360 games (that do not work on the xb1) until the xb1 is released. As soon as your precious console is released they’re not giving out any free games for anything anymore.

In reality, you COULD live without purchasing any games with a ps4 because in a year you end up getting over 30 for free anyway. Xb1 on the other hand..

Jeremy is right, Sony is giving everything away for free. They are no longer a corporation that is concerned with making money. Everyone will be lining up to get all their free shit from Sony. If anyone is interested I have a bridge to sell in Brooklyn.

Well Xbox is giving away Spark and that could spawn a million free games, RPG shooter racers and what not…. It’s all how you look at it, Madden and COD and Final Fantasy won’t be free at least not for a real long time on PS+ personally had PS+ since they released and I like the games but nothing except little big planet is that great to get or I hadn’t already bought.

“Seven new games over the course of two years (leaving out free-to-play and indie games) will cost gamers $420, almost as much as the console itself.” – Would I be paying more than the console if i go PS4.
“While online gaming is nice, sometimes it’s better to just play with someone else on the same couch. So what is the flipside.
    I buy a PS4 for 400, extra controller for 100, 7 games @ 60=420, 120 for ps+ for 2 years and a eye for 60; it total i am spending 1100. Compatible stuff on the X1 is the same.
DON’T HALF ASS STUFF, A GOOD REPORTER TELLS BOTH SIDES.

Xbox fanfags really have proven that they’re quite the special kind.
PS+ Has been giving away games since before MS jumped on the bandwagon, and the games you get are AAA titles or come dam close in a lot of ways.
The Xb1 tracks everything people do, including checking how many people are in a room so they can charge extra for digital content (TV and movies). Also, the Xb1 will only work in 21 states (confirmed by MS). Not to mention that it has to be connected to the internet to play, and you can’t swap games (no more trying before you buy for a few games) AND MS is in cahoots with the US gov to hand over personal/sensitive info of consumers (you ‘tards to be exact. Though less a worry if you’re all thus stupid).
If you gave a PS+ at launch you get DriveClub FREE, so you don’t need to buy a game at launch at all, technically, for the PS3 (saved 60$ already).
Also you don’t need to worry about your old PS3 and down games, as Sony will, if not already have, introduce full backwards compatibility on the console.
Your free Fable3 WILL NOT work on the Xb1 due to their security protocols. Xb1 discs are just glorified installation discs and then they can probably be thrown in the bin.
Also take into account that this means I already have lots of PSX/2/3 games I can play already before getting my PS4 games, and they have better Indy support and better title support on release!
I found this article interesting, though I would say it is worth doing one for the PS4. Just remember that you’re already saving 100$/70£for buying a BETTER STRONER and more RELIABLE console.

    • NikkySC

      06/16/2013 at 4:58 pm

In reply to the bit about backwards compat, that won’t be happening (just double check my info on that), however, they’re looking at streaming old games to the Ps4 with the GaiKai service anyway. So, it just proves that they’re still thinking about their players.

And most people have still got a PS3 at home anyway, so there’s your backwards compatability!

    • Chaos

      06/16/2013 at 5:02 pm

How are you saving a $100? PS4 maybe a $100 cheaper but you get less?
You say PS4 gets Driveclub at launch, how does help people that don’t like driving games?

      • NikkySC

        06/16/2013 at 5:07 pm

Even if you end up buying a PS4 game at launch, assuming 60$, then you’re just tying with HAVING to (being forced to) buy a game at launch for the Xb1 anyway. So you’re still saving 100$ anyway.

You do technically get less, yes, with the PS4 (no eye/capture) and with the Xb1 you get a kinect, but you also get the ability to play at a home with no internet. Too many people taking having the net for granted at that. What if the internet at your area goes down for 6 hours or something?

I actually had typed a lot more up, however it seems it wasn’t liking that amount that I wanted to post, so I couldn’t get my whole point across.

However, taking into account the security things with MS and the player-driven console that the PS4 is, it’s not hard to see which console will come out a clear winner.

The PS4 won’t be cracked/hacked by pirates for a long time anyway, and yet they still give much better support. MS are thinking about their pockets and wondering why they aren’t full of cash, whereas Sony have cared more about what PLAYERS want, not what MediaCentre lovers want.

Wouldn’t you agree on that point, maybe?

        • Chaos

          06/16/2013 at 5:41 pm

I am planning on buying both systems, games, accessories for both.
I don’t agree don’t think your saving a $100, X1 is too let you shares game with 10. So if people I share my library with buy a game I don’t have too.
The internet thing not a worry, my home internet has not gone down since I got it. I have a portable system that i take with me when i travel, granted i only half had it 6-7 months, i never had traveled somewhere with it i couldn’t get internet. Wouldn’t I need internet and PS+ to get driveclub, so how it free?
So your saying Sony is not out to make money? I did not know they were non-profit.
I think both system will be good in different ways.
I wasn’t arguring who would be a winner, I think this will depend on the online service, since i haven’t used both I can’t say yet.

“Xbox fanfags really have proven that they’re quite the special kind”
Didn’t bother reading your crap after this first line, I have to ask though, does the ‘SC’ in NikkySC stand for Stupid C**t?

      • NikkySC

        06/17/2013 at 5:01 am

Well if you’re not going to read anything I have to say then don’t bother with making a reply, because you’ve just made yourself look like the “stupid c**t” by saying you didn’t even bother to read it. Unlike most people, I’m more than happy to at least admit where I might be wrong, however I am still entitled to my own opinion about the fanboys/girls of a system.

Also, Chaos, this is great for -YOUR- circcumstances, but what about the general populace? All those people without internet in their area who now can’t have the Xb1 because they can’t put it online. They will HAVE to get a PS4, and that will be a big boost for Sony.

Also, please don’t take what I say to extremes, and say that I have viewed Sony as a not-for-profit org., when that isn’t what I said. I have stated that Sony have shown more care for the players than they have for the profits, and I feel that the company is showing a much better community-driven approach to their console.

But yet again, when you get to the bare bones of it, the PS4 is a -better- console. And why the hell do we need gimmicks on a console to be able to play th games we love? I don’t want a kinect that watches me like a HAL unit, I don’t want an eye crap from Sony either. All I want is to be able to sit down after being at work, or after being out with my friends, and to play some good old, bare bones, raw video games.

That’s what gaming SHOULD be about. Instead of half immersive technology, we should be pushing for fully immersive tech. The Xb1 is a black spot on MS’s consol record. I don’t see how anyone here can tell me I’m wrong there, when you consider they confirmed only 21 states will work with it at launch.

So will it work for me in the UK? Will it work in the EU with all this TV crap? Gimmicks gimmicks gimmicks for the NA users. For me, almost all of this shit is totally useless., because here in the UK, life isn’t just about sports.

(btw, SC stands for something more impressive/normal than that :P (also why do people make fun of my name to try and hurt me…? */wrist*))

I said I didn’t bother reading because the first line started “Xbox fanfags…”
Let’s face it, it was never gonna go anywhere from there was it?
I’d have had to have been a stupid c**t like you to of read it all.
As to the reply, well I didn’t get much further simply because it was such a f*****g snoozefest.

After partially reading one of NikkySC incoherent, ill-informed and idiotic rants I have decided to buy to Xbox Ones at launch. I don’t wish to buy 4 sets of motion controllers and an PS Eye camera spending hundreds of extra dollars and still not have anything that comes close to the capability of the Kinect 2.0. I’m starting to think all PS fans are 13 or under kids with a poor education, horrible literary ability and unable to accept the fact the Xbox will revolutionize gaming and PS4 is just more of the same..

As of right now you need to see which ones will work on Ps3 and honestly they all can stream from the cloud. Heck they technically could reissue the games based on the new consoles but why? At that point the games install base has passed it’s peak and they would lose money. Publishers would never agree because after all, they are in a business to make money.
And you if your shit goes down there is something called outside that has endless possibilities. I would call to see what’s going on and do something other than salivating when it goes back up.
Hackers, oh geez I can’t believe you brought that up. If I remember correctly that Sony went down for a long time trying to figure out if the breach stole information. Heck even the music and movies rental apps on my Sony Tv were down. Lets not say who has better service because every news article out on the net already says the Live service tops Ps plus.

Enjoy looking like douchebags on your kinects lol. Xbox one is overpriced, over regulated and underpowered. I could care less about 300k servers it’s not worth getting screwed over by microsoft just to have a bit less lag. You do realize the ps4 is 40% more powerful and most games on xbox one will have to be tuned down to play. Even during E3 some xbox games were running on windows 7 with an invidia graphic card. what does that say about your crapbox one? Yet still there are some die hard fan boys that love taking it from microsoft. Well I guess you can go and enjoy your microsoft fisting.

Games are developed on PC’s and played on consoles.
I thought the purpose of E3 was to show what is in development.

The consoles are technically the same. Difference is some features.
And I am not sure if you understand but non of the games on any platform were played from the actual console. They are all in a PC form factor. Oh and windows 7 is a part of the system. Xbox code is the other with a switcher in the middle.

Stupid article that’s just jumping on the Xbox bashing bandwagon.
Stop press, when you buy a game console you’ll need to pay extra for games!
This is even worse than the DVD players don’t come with an entire library of free movies scandal.
I haven’t been so shocked since I bought a fridge and found out the food was a hidden cost I hadn’t expected!!!

Yet another journalist who is happy to leave his brain out of gear when they write an article about sorry against the Xbox One, as other people (and its nice to see a lot of support for MS) have mentioned these same costs also apply to the PS4 in fact an extra controller for the PS4 is about £59 or about $90 now no doubt the Ones controller will be some where near that price but it just goes to show how impartial journalism has left the building and is as hard to find as proof that Elvis is till alive.
There is always going to be resistance to change both good and bad, but seeing as little press has been given to the fact that Sony will now charge to play online MP games, or the fact that 3rd party game developers may use some form of DRM on the PS4 seems to me a concerted effort to shaft the Xbox One

The console price seems to be far from fair – as most of the price is hidden in these purchases – thank you for detailed listing of all hidden spendings – it’s really a reason to think about others consoles

“Each Xbox One game will cost $60, just like current Xbox 360 games. To make the console useful on day one gamers will have to buy at least one game for that price.”

Gee and I thought all the games would be included free for the next ten years!
Aside from being a stupid point to make it’s also wrong, there will be free-to-play games like Project Spark, and Killer Instinct which is available at launch, not to mention Live arcade type games that will be significantly less than $60 and only some third party publisher who choose to will put restrictions on used games so buying used is still an option.

“Xbox One Accessories Aren’t Free…which means gamers will want to play them online. Microsoft requires an Xbox Live Gold”

And the PS4 now requires PS+ so the same thing applies.

“…extra controller, which will cost them $60, the same price as a single game”

The PS4 controller is the same price in the US too, but if you live in Europe Sony is charging a staggering €59 and £54!!! And while the Kinect is included in the Xbox1 price the PS4 would require the additional purchase of an Eyetoy ($59 US, €49/£44 EU) and a move controller for each player (about £30 each) to have the same functionality (please note that the lightbars on the Dualshock 4 controllers do not replace the need for Move controllers but PS3 Move controllers will work on the PS4)

True first year cost of ps4 with all the options. ps4 ($400) + eye ($60) + vita for streaming games ($250) + 2 years of ps plus ($100) + controller ($60) + modem to play online ($100) + bluetooth headset ($100) + games ($420) = $1490. With all optional accessories.

      06/19/2013 at 1:52 am

Yes and don’t forget that the dualshock 4 doesn’t replace Move so for full motion control you still need a Move wand for each player. https://www.psu.com/a018507/

Xbox one vs Ps4. Well for anyone interested in anything else in life besides gaming ,ask yourself why would you give your money to a man and company with this line of thinking.

    https://archive.org/details/WipeOutHumans-BillGates-VaccinesArebestWayToDepopulatePlanet

Think its bs its not it documented. Spend your money with companys that futher your line of thinking in life. Ps4 is a good choice made by a good company not owned by fanatics….. More going on behind the scenes than just ms vs sony, open your eyes.

Bill Gates owns only 6.4 percent of Microsotf and according to several news articles the Xbox division has never made a profit and has actually lost 3 billion dollars in the last ten years, and Sony has lost 5 billion, so it’s highly unlikely Bill will see any of Xbox customer’s money.

      https://www.neowin.net/news/report-microsofts-xbox-division-has-lost-nearly-3-billion-in-10-years

Both are giant corporations who may pretend to be your friend when they are in PR mode and trying to get your money but if EITHER of them became a monopoly in the gaming industry you’d soon find how much they really cared about you.

Trust me if a company was losing money they drop the product. You say 6.4 % huh. Well take a number like say 1 billion and we know microsoft makes more than that. What is 6.4 % of that? Let do an easy 5% its 50 million. Hes not a billionare by chance. Even if sony didnt care about the consumer but there goal is entertainment fine. But when you see somone like Bill Gates spouting off about widdiling down the population because of greenhouse gases it makes you wonder. Why give money even a dollar to that fool. Spend your money in buisnesses that promote good clean ideas, not agendas. If more people spent there money this way youd have alot less fools in the world trying to push there crazy ideas around in the mainstream…..

“Trust me if a company was losing money they drop the product.”

No, I like to remain a bit skeptical about anything I read but given the choice between you and several articles written by well know industry insiders I’m going with the insiders.
You clearly don’t understand how huge corporations work if you think Microsoft or Sony are going to concede the console market to their main competitors over a 3 billion loss over 10 years.

      “You say 6.4 % huh”

Well, actually it’s wikipedia that says so but anyway your whole “5% its 50 million” thing is irrelevant to this argument because Microsoft’s Xbox Division haven’t made a profit

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gates
      https://www.neowin.net/news/report-microsofts-xbox-division-has-lost-nearly-3-billion-in-10-years

      https://kotaku.com/5973498/weapons-of-mass-disruption-3-how-and-why-consoles-will-die

In any case regardless of that, can you honestly tell me that you check out shareholders of every corporation who’s products you buy to see if any of them are bad people? What about the other MS share holders, are they all bad people who deserve to be punished? what about Sony’s shareholders what can you tell me about them?
When you boycott something there are always innocent people who could suffer and bad people who could capitalise, you have to check out all these things if you are serious about it.

I remember when gaming was cheap…. OH WAIT.

People bitching about price haven’t been around long. Remember the NES, how much do you think games cost back then, hm? I’ll tell you, up to $50. Yeah, that 8-bit game cost as much as your Call of Duty game.

If you are shocked that a video game console, games and accessories are expensive, you are an idiot. Simple.
