Earlier this month, Apple confirmed a number of new products for arrival including a new Apple Watch, two new iPhones in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and the iOS 8 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iOS 8 was originally confirmed at WWDC 2014 though at the time, Apple declined to get into specifics about its release date. Instead, it plopped it into its beta program and announced that it would release it to the public this fall.

As expected, those details were confirmed at the company’s annual iPhone launch event. iOS 8 Release Time: 10 AM PST or So

Apple always releases its iOS updates around 10AM PST. In other words, if you’re planning to update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch tomorrow, you’re going to want to gear up for a release somewhere around then. Apple never confirms the release time ahead of release but we almost always see updates roll out in the morning on the west coast.

This applies to all iOS 8 compatible devices. Unlike Google and its Android manufacturers, Apple rolls out iOS updates to every single device at once, including older devices.

You Don’t Need to Install iOS 8 Tomorrow

Remember, you do not have to install iOS 8 tomorrow morning if you don’t want to. iOS 8 isn’t going to up and disappear and Apple is not going to force your hand. In fact, while there are a number of reasons to install iOS 8 tomorrow, there are an equal amount of reasons to think about holding off on the iOS 8 update for iPhone or iPad on day one.

This isn’t something that you’re going to want to rush into so do your homework, weigh the pros and cons, and make a decision. iOS 8 will be around for the next year, up until Apple releases iOS 9 alongside its next iPhone. You’ve got plenty of time to decide whether you want to stay on iOS 7 (if it’s stable) or make your move to the new features.

Wait a Few Hours to Install, Otherwise…

If you do decide to download and install iOS 8 for your iPhone or iPad tomorrow, you might want to wait a few hours for Apple’s servers to settle. Typically, Apple’s servers get slammed with requests in the first two hours after the iOS 8 release. Errors are common and complaints typically get extremely loud on social media.

Should you want to avoid all of that, consider installing later in the day when things have cooled off. It won’t take nearly as long and you’ll get the same update that everyone else got earlier in the day. Again, iOS 8 and its new features aren’t going anywhere.

Set Aside Some Time for the Update

At the very least, set aside some time to install the iOS 8 update. If everything goes smoothly, though it probably won’t in the hours after Apple releases the update, the iOS 8 update installation process could take as little as 15 minutes on a good connection.

Given that this is a major iOS release, there will likely be an assortment of errors and problems so you’ll want to set aside at least an hour to periodically monitor the update’s progress. For some, it could take longer than that.

Installing at home not only means that there will be fewer distractions but it means that you should have access to all of the proper information in case something goes wrong. The last thing that iPhone and iPad owners want is something to go haywire while at work or in the middle of class.

Those of you who are tempted to install at work might want to wait until they get home, particularly if the iPhone or iPad is important to work flow. There is no telling what might happen during, or after, the installation process.

Don’t Panic If There Are iOS 8 Problems

If you do run into installation problems or problems with the iOS 8 update itself, don’t panic. Installation issues typically iron themselves out and major bugs tend to get fixed within a couple of days. Apple is well known for pushing out key bug fix updates in the days after a major iOS update release.

Again, if you come prepared to the iOS 8 release date, you’ll be well equipped even if you do run into some day one iOS 8 problems with either the installation or the software. Backing up your data is essential.

Here Are Some Solid Resources If You Do Panic

There might be some extremely minor issues that arrive with iOS 8. Apple will likely be less inclined to fix those. There will also be those of you that want to be proactive with iOS 8 problems. In other words, you don’t or won’t want to want for Apple’s next bug fix update.

Apple’s discussion forums are the first place to look. There, users will share their own issues and perhaps, temporary or permanent fixes will come to light during the discussion. They are usually overflowing with messages on the first day of an update’s availability.

Comment sections and Twitter are also helpful places to go should something come up during the iOS 8 installation process or after the software is downloaded and installed. The MacRumors forums are also another solid place to look for possible fixes or help with the iOS 8 update should you need it.

iOS 8 vs iOS 7 Walkthrough - Home Screen

We start our iOS 8 vs iOS 7 walkthrough with the iPhone home screen, which is where you'll start your iOS 8 experience after an update this fall.

These screens are incredibly important as you see them anytime you turn on the iPhone or need to choose an app to launch. There is no way around using them, so Apple needs to make sure they work just right.

As you can see in the iOS 8 vs iOS 7 comparison above, there is no change between the home screen in the new iPhone software. Apple changed the status bar and some other small visual changes in iOS 7, but there are no updates for iOS 8.

We could see Apple change the home screen slightly for iOS 8 for the iPhone 6. The new iPhone will feature a larger 4.7-inch display with a higher resolution. This is something Apple may use to add more icons to the screen. Or they could stick with the current layout, it's tough to tell.
