10 Things to Like About the iPhone 5 Already

Published

on

Apple’s next iPhone, presumed to be called the iPhone 5, has surfaced in countless rumors over the course of 2012. And while we still don’t know exactly what the future holds for the sixth-generation iPhone, there are already some things that future owners should like about the device.

Over the past few months, the iPhone 5 has been rumored to be coming with a host of new features. From a metal back, to 4G LTE data speeds, to a 4-inch display that was seemingly confirmed by our exclusive iPhone 5 engineering sample photos, Apple’s iPhone 5 is many things.

The device still remains a mystery though and it will likely stay that way until Apple takes the stage and shows off the device this fall.

However, just because we don’t know what the iPhone 5 is exactly doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to already like about it. Here are 10 such things.

This is what the iPhone 5 could look like.

Several Launch Carriers

Many Android and Windows Phone powered devices launch on specific carriers. Need examples? Here are a few. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy Note, the unique 5.3-inch phablet, has only been available on AT&T and will soon be available on T-Mobile as well.

The Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX remains a Verizon exclusive. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus only launched, officially, on Sprint and Verizon.

The Droid RAZR is only available on Verizon.

The HTC Titan II and Nokia Lumia 900, both Windows Phones, are only on available on AT&T.

Prospective iPhone 5 owners will need not worry about this kind of exclusivity. The iPhone 5, like the iPhone 4S before it, will likely launch on a trio of big name U.S. carriers in AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

And, there is a possibility that it will show up on several other carriers like C-Spire shortly afterward.

Major Hardware Upgrades

There hasn’t been an iPhone launch that didn’t include some hardware upgrades over the previous version of the device. Don’t expect anything less of the iPhone 5.

We still don’t know exactly what’s on board the iPhone 5, but,  here are the rumors:

  • A 4-inch display that will replace the device’s usual 3.5-inch display.
  • A thinner design rumored to be 7.9mm up to the current 9.3mm found on the iPhone 4S.
  • A metal back that might replace the glass Apple used with the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4.
  • A taller design to accommodate the device’s larger display.
  • An improved front-facing camera, possibly HD in quality.
  • 4G LTE data connectivity.
  • Quad-Core Processor, possibly the A6 chip.
  • Smaller 19-pin dock connector.
  • Near-Field Communication support.

While it may not end up coming with all of those features, it will definitely feature some pretty powerful hardware, like all iPhones before it.

Plentiful Amount of Apps

Owners of the iPhone 5 won’t have to worry about getting the very best applications loaded up on their new device.

First of all, the Apple App Store has a massive amount of applications that cater to every need. From productivity apps, to apps for the musically inclined, to a vast catalog of games, the App Store is currently loaded with hundreds of thousands of applications.

And second, and probably best of all, the iOS App Store is generally first to get applications. For instance, Max Payne Mobile launched for iOS long before it launched on Android. And Instagram was available for the iPhone and iPad way before the Android app launched.

Expect this trend to continue as long as the App Store stays as lucrative as it is.

No iPhone 5 Launch Shenanigans

Another thing to like about the iPhone 5 launch and really, Apple, is that there are never any launch shenanigans that occur. Apple executives take the stage, show off the product, announce a price, pre-order information, a release date, and the device becomes available to order that day.

Then, on launch day, the device is actually available in stores and it arrives for some of those who pre-ordered.

The Galaxy S III launch was a mess. The iPhone 5 launch won’t be.

This is vastly different compared to Android launches, like those of the Google Nexus  7 and Samsung Galaxy S III that were both uninformative and messy.

Those buying the iPhone 5 will appreciate the straightforward launch, something that Apple manages to do time after time.

Software Upgrades Well Into the Future

While many Android and Windows Phone owners buy phones wondering whether their device will see the next major update, Apple has a very different approach when it comes to updating its devices.

A much better approach.

The company keeps updating its smartphones long after they launch and this will likely be a trend that it continues with the upcoming iPhone 5.

After all, the iPhone 3GS is over three years old and it will be getting iOS 6, Apple’s latest software update, when it arrives this fall. This is, of course, after it also got iOS 5 and iOS 4.

That kind of support just does not happen in the world of Android or Windows Phone.

Familiar Price Tag

Sure, Apple is able to keep its hardware a secret before launch day, but it’s quite predictable when it comes to things like pricing.

The company has not changed up the price of the iPhone in quite some time and we don’t expect the company to do anything different with the iPhone 5, even if it releases it with 4G LTE capabilities. In fact, carriers don’t even charge a premium on 4G LTE devices anymore, that’s how commonplace it is now.

That means that those looking to get the iPhone 5 will likely be staring at the usual $199.99 price tag for the 16GB iPhone 5 device this fall.

Storage Options

Earlier today, it became clear that Samsung’s 64GB Galaxy S III wouldn’t be launching until later this year. So, instead of being able to purchase it at launch, consumers are going to have to wait for several months after the device’s launch to buy one.

AT&T also decided to just launch a 16GB model of the Galaxy S III for whatever reason.

This won’t happen with the new iPhone. Apple will most likely have the usual suspects available at launch including a 16GB model, 32GB variant and a 64GB iPhone 5 for those that want a massive amount of storage.

So there will be no waiting and there won’t be a shortage of options either.

Full-Fledged iOS 6

The iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 won’t be getting all of the features that the iPhone 4S gets with iOS 6. Those looking to get the iPhone 5 should rest easy knowing that Apple won’t skimp on the iOS 6 features for the next iPhone.

In fact, the carrier might even add a unique software feature or two at the iPhone 5 event.

Apple introduced Siri, not at WWDC 2011, but at the iPhone 4S event itself and the personal assistant has remained unique to the iPhone 4S since.

Won’t Immediately Get Overshadowed

In the world of Android, phones are often overshadowed by other phones almost immediately. Cases of this include the Motorola Droid Bionic and the Droid RAZR, the Droid RAZR and the Droid RAZR MAXX, the Samsung Galaxy S III for Verizon and the Samsung Galaxy S III for Verizon Developers Edition.

This will not happen with the iPhone 5.

Apple releases one smartphone, per year, and that shouldn’t change this fall. This is a comfort that owners of Google’s Nexus devices appreciate and something that iPhone owners often take for granted.

Lots of Accessories

iPhone launches bring out tons of iPhone accessories, from cases to docks, and the iPhone 5 launch will be no different.

The iPhone 5 will have accessories galore.

There should be plentiful amounts of accessories available at launch for those that want them and we should see a steady stream of them launch in the months after the iPhone 5’s release.

Wow…Apple iPhone 5 will finally show up to the 4G LTE party a year late, no doubt with a “larger” screen (by iPhone standards) but no doubt will be hailed as the greatest thing since Swiss cheese by Apple fanatics. After all, nothing important occurs until Apple does it. YAWN.

Yawn all u want. I like both OS but it’s obvious apple knows what they’re doing. They could of released the 4s with 4g and some of the other upgrades mentioned that aren’t really “new”, but they let android do it first and see where they fail. (ie: shitty battery life) Yea u can look at the Razr maxx and say they already have a phone with 4g and awesome battery life but then again it’s just another disposable android phone that’s phased out in a few months just like the article describes by another android with maybe a slightly “faster” processor which after you benchmark test doesn’t even make a difference. Apps always come out for ios first and are always more refined, and no android has been able to match ios smoothness and stability. The screen size is perfect. If youve ever used a phone with a huge screen and an iPhone on a daily basis, you would agree. The huge screen on the galaxy nexus is great for watching videos but for daily functionality it’s simply too big. I dont care how big your hands are its damn near impossible to use the phone with one hand, unlike the iPhone. Then u have all these apps that your phone isnt compatible with simply because of your oversized screen. I had an incredible 2 and always wished the iPhone had that screen size. It’s as big as it should be to still be able to work it with one hand if needed and everything still looks great even if it’s not a screen that’s borderline tablet sized.

Droid Bionic, Droid RAZR, Droid RAZR MAXX, Galaxy S III for Verizon and the Samsung Galaxy S III for Verizon Developers Edition, etc. etc. Many choices to suit individual preferences- that’s a big reason more and more people are choosing Android phones over iPhones.

So, they MAY finally hit 4G LTE….a year late…. they MAY finally have a bigger screen……over a couple years late….they MAY finally have NFC……over a year late….Why would anyone look foreward to this when you can already get so much more on Android? Can’t wait for the phone to be dated before it’s release…oh wait it already is…
