2 Reasons to Buy the 2019 iMac & 3 Reasons Not To

“Should I buy the 2019 iMac right now?” That’s the question shoppers are asking now that Apple’s updated the new iMac with more powerful processors and GPUs. While there are important new features with the 2019 iMac, it is not a complete refresh and there are some important reasons you shouldn’t upgrade.

Apple upgraded the iMac in March 2019 with new Intel processors and new AMD Radeon Vega processors that combine to deliver up to 2X the performance of the 2018 models that Apple sold up until today and that you can still buy at Best Buy, Amazon or through Apple’s refurbished shop.

While this is a very important upgrade for many buyers, it is not a complete redesign and some buyers should keep using what they already have, instead of buying the new iMac.

Should you buy the 2019 iMac? Here are the reasons you should buy the new iMac today;

  1. Buy the 2019 iMac if You Need Tons of Power
  2. Buy if You Keep Your Mac For Years

That’s it. There are far more reasons to skip the 2019 iMac. This doesn’t mean you should never buy it, but you may want to wait or look at alternatives. Here are the reasons not to buy the 2019 iMac;

  1. Don’t Upgrade From a 2018 iMac
  2. Wait for 2019 iMac Deals
  3. Wait for Reviews from Real World Users

The 2019 iMac starts at $1,299 for the 21.5-inch 4K version and $1,799 for the 27-inch 5K version. The cheapest 21.5 inch iMac isn’t upgraded for 2019, so don’t buy it thinking you will get the same performance and power.

The 2109 iMac is all about power. Apple says it is twice as fast as the iMac it replaces. It may even be a better fit for some users than the iMac Pro with these latest upgrades.

Apple now includes Intel 8th gen quad core processors in the 21.5-inch iMac and for the first time offers a six-core processor option on the smaller iMac. This is up to 60% faster than the 2018 model.

Apple takes the performance of the 27-inch iMac even further in 2019 with Intel Core i9 6 and 8-core processor options that the company says are up to 2.4 times faster than the older models.

That's just on the processor side of things. Apple also upgrades the graphics with AMD Radeon Pro Vega GPu options in the iMac for the first time. This is an 80% graphical bump for the 21.5-inch iMac and a 50% boost for the 27-inch iMac.

Apple focuses this 2019 imac upgrade on power users that work in 3D content, video editing and game designers as well as other power users that need access to on demand speed and power, but don't need to go all the way to the 2019 iMac Pro.

If this sounds like you, upgrading to the 2019 iMac could save you lots of time and pay for itself in no time.

    They should wait until the next WDC in early June to see if there are any announcements about the upgradeable Mac Pro or the next generation of Mac computers powered by new Apple chips — replacing intel chips. It’s not that far away. Why spend a lot of money on computers that may already be soon obsolete when new more powerful Macs are around the corner — possibly with new technology to complement the upcoming AR glasses. This is the worst time to buy a new Mac. Apple is about to make a large pivot away from it’s current architecture. Wait if you can. At the least, the existing Macs will be cheaper.
