Next-Gen iPhone Chassis Aims to Remedy Antennagate Issues

Published

on

When the iPhone 4 launched, Apple made a huge deal about the stainless steel band that wraps around the device, but unfortunately because the external antenna isn’t coated, your skin, when held over the antenna, interferes with the reception of your iPhone. That issue, dubbed lovingly by the press as Antennagate, was considered one of the major tech follies of 2010. Come 2011, SmartPhone Medic is releasing photos of what is reported as an updated case design for the next-generation iPhone.

The new stainless steel antenna band that wraps around the sides of the phone has been updated with different placements for the seams and cuts, hopefully in an effort to alleviate reception and connectivity problems that are associated with Antennagate. With the old design, if your skin bridges the seams of the phone, usually on the lower lend hand side when your fingers bridge the seam when in a call, a drop call or drop in signal would result.

It’s unclear if the updated design would be used on the next-generation GSM-based iPhone 5, the successor to the iPhone 4, or if it will be used on the Verizon iPhone, which could be either CDMA/EVDO or CDMA/EVDO/LTE 4G.

From the looks of the chasis, I doubt this will be iPhone 5. It will be a different model of the current iPhone 4. Possibly the one for Verizon

yes but apple invested alot of time, money and effort into the new case design of iphone 4, i doubt they will throw it out the window when they could just fix the problem by moving the slits to a new position, or simply coating it with something.
