Speck iPhone 6 MightyShell + Faceplate Review

Published

on

The Speck iPhone 6 MightyShell + Faceplate case delivers a lot of protection in a small package. Like the Speck MightyShell iPhone 6 case we reviewed last year, this case delivers rugged protection without the bulk that you traditionally see on iPhone cases that promise protection from more than a small drop.

Speck CandyShell iPhone cases like the Inked series deliver good protection, but for users who need more, there is the MightyShell Phone 6 line of cases.

This new option adds a front cover that includes a screen protector and a rubber guard to double up on the amount of protection your iPhone 6’s screen gets while in this case.

The Speck iPhone 6 MightyShell + Faceplate covers the front and back of your iPhone.

The Speck MightyShell + FacePlate is $59.99 from Speck and includes two parts. There is the standard Speck MightyShell iPhone 6 case that we love and a new front faceplate that adds protection around the edges. It is also available for the iPhone 6 Plus and for the iPhone 5s.

A screen protector is built in to the Faceplate part of this iPhone 6 case, but it is not attached to the Speck MightyShell case itself. Users apply the Faceplate to the iPhone directly. The installation process is simple with no bubbles after a few minutes.

The Faceplate adds protection, but can get in the way of some left to right gestures.

Speck’s FacePlate screen protector delivers protection from shock using five layers including a, “shock absorptive cushioning layer”, a “shock dispersive rigid layer” and others including an adhesive bond that the company says uses TrueTap technology to form a bond that delivers great touch screen performance.

While we didn’t torture test the iPhone 6 MightyShell+Faceplate the screen protector survived a week inside a pocket with keys and change and the touch part is top-notch. The only problem with the Faceplate is that the rubber edges can get in the way of using gestures to navigate in apps.

It is easy to use the Notification Center and Control Center, but swiping to go back in menus and apps from the left edge of the screen is tricky.

The MightyShell case delivers great protection.

The Speck iPhone 6 MightyShell case is identical to the one we reviewed and loved last year. This case uses, “radial impact geometry” to soften the blow of a drop by cushioning the iPhone and allowing the case to take the brunt of the impact.

It is easy to hold the iPhone 6 in our hand while in this case and the raised edges help with the overall protection. The Faceplate lines up with the raised edges for added support if you drop the iPhone.

All of the ports and buttons are easy to use on the Speck MightyShell + Faceplate case with rubberized covers on the buttons that make using them a breeze eve by feel. Touch ID works great, even with the Faceplate protection on the sides.  The back of the case is matte, so it doesn’t show scratches as much as glossy iPhone 6 cases.

The Speck iPhone 6 MightyShell + Faceplate is a great option for users who want a well-designed iPhone 6 case that offers way more protection than you normally find in this price range, but if you use gestures on the left side of the screen in apps every day you may be better suited with the non-Faceplate MightyShell iPhone 6 case option.

Apple Leather iPhone 6 Cases

Apple Leather iPhone 6 Cases

One of the most popular iPhone 6 cases is the leather iPhone 6 case from Apple. This case is one that you can find in any Apple Store on release day and is also listed with many carriers.

Apple designs the leather iPhone 6 case with premium leather in a small form factor that adds minimal bulk to the new iPhone. You can find the leather iPhone 6 case in five color options that match the white and black front of the iPhone 6.

Watch out if you buy the red iPhone 6 case as the leather model for the iPhone 5s wore very fast and looked dirty and grey soon after purchasing.
