Many of these Apple Music tricks and tips are things you’ll need to turn on, but some of them are already on, you just need to know how to use them in the new Apple Music app. For now these work on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Tell Apple What Music You Like, Again

When you set up Apple Music you tell Apple what genres you like and what artists you like. If you are in a hurry you might not give Apple the best look at your musical tastes and the new For You tab will not appeal to you.

You can go in and re-do this section to remove artists you don’t like and add others now that you have time.

In the Apple Music app or in iTunes tap or click on your profile photo or the silhouette if you did not add a photo. Tap on Choose Artists for You.

From here you can reset your selections or add and customize what you already selected. You can repeat this as much as you need to.

Choose an Apple Music Username

The Apple Music service is a lot like a musical social network. You can choose your own username right now before all the good ones are gone. To do this go to the Apple Music app or in iTunes tap or click on your profile photo.

Pick your Apple Music username.

Now tap on the top option where there is a space for a name and a username. Here you can enter your preferred name and a username. Your name can be a duplicate, but your username must be unique and there are limits to length.

Try out the various usernames you want until you get one to save as the first to claim it.

Heart Songs for Better Recommendations

The Apple Music app and service can deliver better music to you when you tell the service what you like. To do this, tap on the star when you are listening to a song you like. You can also add a heart to an album so that you add that whole album as one that you like.

Follow Your Favorite Artists on Apple Music

Artists and bands are on Apple Music in the Connect tab. This is where you can see what the musicians are listening to, get early access to what they are working on and hear about tours and other important details.

You are already following some artists based on your iTunes Library, so with this option you can also unfollow artists you don’t care about anymore.

Go to Apple Music then tap on Connect and See Who You’re Following to curate your current list. You can scroll through here to find other artists and search for artists to follow as well.

On the Apple Music Connect page you can turn on an option to automatically follow artists you add to your library. If you want to make sure you see more from the artists you enjoy listening to, you can turn this on so that you don’t need to take a second step when you want to hear more and see more from that artist.
