How to Download Amazon Prime Movies on iPhone

For the first time with any streaming service of its kind, Amazon Instant Video now allows iOS and Android users who have a Prime membership to download movies and TV shows to their devices for offline viewing. Here’s how to do it on your iPhone.

A feature like this has been wanted for a long time, with many users begging Netflix to introduce the ability to watch shows and movies offline, since a lot of folks want to catch up on their favorite shows while flying across the country. However, Netflix has yet to introduce a feature like this.

Never fear, though, as Amazon has taken the lead on this one and introduced the ability to download content for offline viewing on iOS and Android. Previously, it was available on Kindle Fire tablets, but now anyone with an iPhone, iPad or Android device can join in on the fun.

While Amazon Video isn’t quite as popular as Netflix, the service has a handful of great selections to choose from, with a good mix of TV shows and movies that will keep you entertained without needing an internet connection.

Without further ado, here’s how to download Amazon Prime movies on your iPhone so that you can watch them offline.

Downloading Amazon Prime Movies

The first thing you’ll want to do is download the Amazon Video app from the App Store on your iPhone, if you haven’t done this already.

From there, sign into the app using your Amazon account. Be aware that you need an Amazon Prime membership in order to download content to watch offline. Otherwise, you won’t be able to take advantage of this feature.

After you log in, you’ll greeted with the main screen in the app. Now, before we start downloading a movie, we’ll want to head into the settings to adjust the download quality of the movies and TV shows that will be downloaded. To do this, tap Settings at the bottom and then select Download Quality.

You’ll be able to choose from Good, Better, and Best. Choose the one that you want and know that a lesser quality will save storage space, whereas the best quality will use up more storage space.

After you choose a quality, head back to the home screen and tap on a movie that you want to download for offline viewing. I chose The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Off to the right, tap on Download to begin the downloading process. If you have notifications enabled for the app, you’ll receive a notification when the download is complete. Tapping on Options next to the download bar will allow you to pause the download or cancel it if you wish.

After the download is complete, you can watch the movie without having an internet connection by tapping Watch Now. You’ll get a pop up saying that the movie will only be available for 48 hours offline, and that if you want to keep it longer than 48 hours, you’ll need to reconnect to WiFi or LTE.

As you can see on my iPad, I have WiFi off, but I’m enjoying the movie just like if I were streaming it, only this time I don’t have to worry about glitches or lag.

After you’re done watching the movie, you can delete it by tapping Options and then selecting Delete Download.

Now, if it’s a TV show that you’re wanting to download, you unfortunately can’t download multiple episodes at once, or even an entire season at once. Instead, you have to download episodes individually.

To do this, open up a TV show in the app and it’ll list the episodes at the bottom. Simply click the Download button (an arrow pointing down) and that episode will automatically begin downloading for offline viewing.

When you delete a movie or TV show, it will still keep your place if you stopped watching it half-way through, so there’s no need to keep a movie offline if you haven’t finished it yet.
