Gears of War 4 Beta Problems: 5 Things to Know

Published

on

After several months of anticipation, the Gears of War 4 beta is finally live for select gamers. As expected, there are a number of problems plaguing the early version of the game and today we want to take a look at five things to know about Gears of War 4 beta problems.

Last year, Microsoft and The Coalition confirmed a Gears of War 4 release for Xbox One. They also confirmed a Gears of War 4 beta for the spring of 2016 ahead of the game’s release date.

Earlier this year, the developer confirmed a Gears of War 4 release date (October 11th) and a Gears of War 4 beta release date.

The Gears of War 4 beta is now open to those who played Gears of War Ultimate Edition and it will open up to everyone else on April 25th.

The Coalition’s Gears of War 4 beta is a real beta in that it’s not just for promotional purposes. The developer really needs your help stress testing the multiplayer portion of the game ahead of its release in October.

This is an early version of the game so unsurprisingly its got its fair share of problems. Beta testers are starting to report a number of Gears of War 4 beta problems and today we we want to outline the most important things you need to know as we push deeper into the testing period.

This roundup highlights some of the more glaring issues and it also provides some essential resources for Gears of War 4 beta testers.

Gears of War 4 Beta Code Problems

Gears of War 4 beta codes started rolling out yesterday and they were supposedly to roll out in chronological order based on when gamers played Gears of War Ultimate Edition. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned.

The Coalition and gamers experienced Gears of War 4 beta code problems right from the jump and these problems have forced it to change the way Gears of War 4 beta codes will be delivered this week. Here’s the latest update:

Microsoft Operations had an issue this morning with their code drop and unfortunately the codes will not be distributed in chronological order as originally messaged. We will be doing another code drop this evening to help address some of the issues. As noted before, codes will be going out in waves as we ramp up our servers through the beta.

Starting this morning, the developer is “sending out a higher volume of codes to help compensate for this change and due to server stability seen during Day 1 of our beta.”

It also notes that this “change and volume will carry on through Wednesday and Thursday morning (pacific time) which will cover off on everyone for early access.”

So, if you don’t have an access code yet, you should have one by the end of the day Thursday. Remember to check your Xbox Live Messages throughout the day.

Gears of War 4 Beta Download Problems

Some testers have run into download problems.

The Gears of War 4 beta is a huge file, 7GB, and it requires a huge chunk of storage space on your internal/external hard drive. It can also take a little while to download.

If you’re running into slow download speeds, try plugging your ethernet cord directly into your Xbox One. This could speed things up, especially if your Xbox One is far away from your router.

If your download gets hung up, try pausing it and restarting it.

If the Gears of War 4 beta download isn’t showing up for you, try going to ‘My Games and Apps’ and scrolling to the far right of the screen. You’ll know you’re in the right place if you see a list of content you own.

Once you’re there, do a search for the Gears of War 4 Beta in this area. When it pops up, select install and you should be on your way.

Other Gears of War 4 Beta Problems

We’re also hearing about a number of technical problems with the Gears of War 4 beta. Not surprising because this is an early version of the game.

The Coalition’s forums are starting to fill up with feedback about issues and bugs and they include complaints about quiet or missing footstep sounds, flashing and glitching (particularly on the Foundation map), hit detection issues with the Torque Bow, issues with the “Unlucky Ba$tard” ribbon, lag, the menu screen getting stuck when unpausing the game, issues with various textures, and more.

Two things to keep in mind here. One, this is a beta. There are going to be problems and this is just the beginning. We expect complaints to pickup as the beta picks up steam in the days ahead.

If you don’t think you can handle it, you might want to take a rain check. Problems will persist to the very end.

And two, there’s a good chance we’ll see The Coalition issue updates or patches of some kind during the beta period. Something to look out for and a good reason to report anything and everything you see in the beta should you choose to continue playing it.

If you do run into technical issues, you can try restarting the game or restarting your Xbox One. If that doesn’t work, try unplugging your Xbox One for a minute and then firing it up again.

How to Report Gears of War 4 Beta Problems

If you see an issue, report it. The Coalition isn’t running this beta to market the game (though we’re sure it helps). It’s running this beta to improve it before the final release and it wants any feedback you can send in.

There are a few ways to do get this done. Option one is submitting feedback via this online form. Be sure to be as detailed as possible.

Gears-10

Option two joining the Gears Feedback program. The Gears Feedback program allows the developer to send you surveys about the game directly to your inbox.

Or you can simply post on the Gears of War 4 forum or the Gears Technical forum. These will start to fill up with complaints as time goes on but there are several sticky threads of note.

Where to Find Fixes for Gears of War 4 Beta Problems

If you see a Gears of War 4 beta issue and you want to try and fix it yourself, there are a few places to look for potential remedies.

There are a couple of resources we recommend. First, the Gears of War 4 forums and the Gears Technical forums. Gears of War 4 beta testers, and quite possibly the developers themselves, will likely share fixes there.

The other resource to take advantage of is the Gears of War 4 Reddit. We’re already seeing feedback on there and we could see some fixes emerge between now and the end of the beta.

If you’re in need of help, those are the two places to go for potential fixes for your problems. For the moment at least.
