3 Reasons Not to Install Galaxy S6 Nougat & 8 Reasons You Should

Published

on

You might be tempted to install the Samsung Galaxy S6 Nougat update (or a new Nougat build) right when the prompt appears but some of you are better off waiting a few hours or a few days before making the move.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Nougat update continues to make progress as we push deeper into the year. If your device is still lingering on Marshmallow, or an older version of Nougat, your Galaxy S6 could receive an Android 7.0 Nougat update at any moment.

When an update arrives, your first instinct (particularly if you’ve been waiting a long time) will be to install it immediately. We don’t blame you.

Android Nougat for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, and Galaxy S6 Active delivers some exciting changes to these former flagship devices.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Nougat updates have delivered a brand new blue light filter to help you get a better night’s sleep, a Device Maintenance mode to help you get a handle on performance, improved security, and an assortment of bug fixes and tweaks. Most of you will, at some point, want to install Android Nougat on your phone.

While some of you will be perfectly fine installing the Galaxy S6 Android Nougat update right when it arrives, many others will want to take a rain check.

Today we want to walk you through some reasons to install the Galaxy S6 Nougat update and some reasons why you might want to avoid the update, temporarily at least.

Install Nougat If You Value Your Security

Install Nougat If You Value Your Security

If you store sensitive information on your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge you'll want to consider installing Nougat as soon after it arrives for your device.

Google and Samsung release monthly security patches that deliver named, and unnamed, patches for potential exploits.

The Galaxy S6 Nougat update that's rolling out right now delivers Samsung's most recent security update. It includes patches from Google and Samsung itself.  You can read more about the contents over on Samsung's website

If you missed an older Samsung security update, like one from May or June, you'll get those patches as well.

These important security patches are just a part of the Android Nougat update for the Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge+, and Galaxy S6 Active.

If you're installing Android Nougat for the first time your Galaxy S6's update should also bring Samsung Pass, a service that serves as a master key to all of your various logins.

Instead of relying on a password and ID to protect your identity, Samsung Pass uses the Galaxy S6's fingerprint scanner to keep your information safe.

It's extremely easy to setup and it should be useful to anyone that values security.

I prefer LastPass over Samsung Pass. That’s great it would use my fingerprint to fill/sign me in, but that’s useless on a computer. LastPass has browser integration as well as phone integration (that also utilizes your fingerprint to fill out login information). If you fully utilize the application you’d only need to remember one password, your master password, and let LastPass generate random passwords for you.

While I agree Lastpass is a usefull and I have been a full paid user, this is becoming an issue..

      I’ve been looking at https://lesspass.com/

But I haven’t mad the leap yet. It doesnt store passwords, it generates passwords them based on multiple variables, so even compromising your master password doesn’t necessarily give access to all your accounts.

But I’m not a crypto guy, so hard to judge whether there are flaws on that side, but the concept sounds good.

I have the nougat update on my s6 and my only problems are the battery drain and completely mental keyboard. It’s literally frustrating to type on it or even us the swipe key function to type. I lost nearly 50% battery in 2 hours.

The SWYPE is absolutely horrible on Nougat. Samsung is constantly messing up Google updates, to fit in their mess. I was thinking of rooting mine, but I am definitely going back to Marshmallow.

Hate the touch screen response since downloading nougat. Also really hate the monochrome color scheme and the layout. Everything runs together. It is,difficult to read and fonts and color scheme makes it worse. Hate this update more and more. Sad state of affairs. Pay for a phone capable of great color and might as well just be looking at black and white. Even contacts are hard to read.

Absolutely agree. I also hate that my Favorites on my contacts are grouped above the full list. They used to be a separate screen – this update made using the phone a nightmare.

Hating this update. I agree with Melanie on the color scheme, or lack thereof. Fonts are small onscreen, calendar is a hot mess of stripes in crazy colors and i can’t read the font in my favorites in contacts. Sux!!

Hate it! Keyboard, color graphics are terrible. Can’t see letters, words clear. Cant change to vibrant colors on texts. Not bold enough to read. Hard press is slow. Settings are also terrible. HATE HATE! Calendar a mess. Including alerts. More work to find LOG when trying to block calls, its called recent now & u have to swipe left to find it. Many more complaints.

Upgrading now – last night (before I, or the phone knew of this update) my phone started rebooting – started after plugging in to charge, then I found I could only get it to stay on at all with power saving mode enabled – seemed to relate to anything using the CPU a bit.

Reboot happens in safe mode to (which btw changed themes, wallpaper, removed widgets etc in ” normal” mode without asking me).

Paranoia says the device is compromised by some malware.
Pessemist says “hardware issue”, probably dead (+cynicism=planned obsolescence killswitch)

Optimist says “update will fix everything!”

    ….

    Update applied, rebooted…
    …Android is upgrading, fingers crossed

(If it gets the phone stable again, that’s good enough for me!)

    • Me

      04/20/2017 at 12:13 am

      Nope, still unstable.

I’m calling hardware. (I’ll probably try a full wipe, but I likely need a new phone)

Can’t even activate power saving now as that triggers a crash :(

How do I uninstall it? I have had to recharge the phone three times today, when it charges at all, and I can’t see pictures sent to me Via text.

Nougat is a disaster of an update for me. On top of complaints that others have expressed (like the color scheme/graphics), mine will not stay connected to wi-fi. I’ve tried different wi-fi networks, rebooting phone, rebooting wi-fi, everything I can think of. It just connects for a few minutes then drops it for a few minutes then reconnects in a tireless loop. It’s also annoying that everytime it drops wi-fi and then connects to wi-fi, it gives an audible notification which I haven’t found how to turn off yet.

My recommendation is to not update to Nougat until more of the bugs have been fixed.

Just did the update. Phone is stuck at VZW red startup screen. They check mark white pulsing line moves, so i know it graphically isn’t frozen. However, it has been in this state for 20 minutes since after downloading, then installing the update. So i determined that I would let it sit longer with it plugged in… Still didn’t do anything. I held VOL DOWN and POWER to boot into safe mode. Tried the first option, NORMAL Mode with same freeze up at VZW Red Screen. So I tried it again, this time in SAFE mode, same results.
I am pissed at myself, because I have learned to not do updates for at least months after release due to flaws, but this time, it downloaded and when i thought I hit the NO, don’t install button, I hit yes. Instant regret set in… And here i am with a fancy night light, nothing has been backed up in a long while… Thank you SAMSUNG for this garbage.

I feel like I’ve been robbed or hijacked. Samsung took it upon themselves to force this junk on us. I bought this phone an dealt with the junk installed on it but I found a work around. I liked it. It was dark and there were pretty colors. I didn’t approve this update and yet it did it. Now my text, calendar and contact screens are so bright, I could go outside and land a plane or light up a football field. This is a phone, not a flashlight. It’s blinding and so sterile. Who was the test group? A bunch of doctors? I feel Samsung owes me my money back for destroying my phone and my vision.

I liked all the reasons to install, so I gave it a try. Any idea if you can change the look of the notifications on your home screen? WOW what a change for the worst! The font is so small and all the notifications have lost their “individuality” so with out glasses on you have no idea what is on the screen. So much for a quick glance update as the notifications are supposed to provide. The black icons at the top and light grey fonts used in many of the settings are also hard to read. Is there a way to switch the appearance back???

I agree!! I HATE HATE HATE this update. I just got my s6 set the way I wanted and this update took it upon itself to change settings and my notifications are horrendous ! How can I put it back the way it was? There was noting wrong with it before.

I upgraded to Nougat today on my Samsung Galaxy s6. Unfortunately I was not aware of the problems with it. I now no longer can use my Bluetooth functions plus the battery drain is scary. The battery drained in less than 3 hours. Now I am told I need to do a factory reboot to save my phone! It worked perfectly until this OS was installed.

The keyboard is horrendous. Can’t even see the symbols on the letter keys to do a long press to use them. The symbols are way to light. Can’t even guess at the ones on the bottom row. Dislike the icon color scheme the used. Hard press only works sometimes. Hate they took away tabs in phone numbers and no my favorites are names with tiny pics on top of my contact list. Bad choices on whoever made these design changes.

since the update, my group messages now pull a random photo from another thread and insert it into the group I am in when I get a text. no one else can see the photo, but it’s embedded into whatever is sent to me and if I delete the photo, the message goes away too.

With no changes to my S6 other than installing Nougat I am out of battery by noon. Before the battery would last until evening. I am out of communication in the afternoon if I can not find a charger. A major problem.

“Be patient with this update. The Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy S6 Edge+ are aging devices and new software combined with old hardware is a volatile mixture.”

Old? Aging? Galasy S6 was announced march 2015 – that’s two years ago. If that’s “old” then there is something wrong with the mobile business.

It’s sad how especially poor people spend hundreds of dollars on these short-term devices while a decent quality computer easily lasts seven years and self-assembled PC:n can go ten years and still perform as fast as budget priced cr.. “products”.

recently updated to Android 7.0 Nougat on Samsung S6, now it works better – sometimes with different features but it constantly says Not connected to Wi-Fi even when settings say and show it is. phone calls often don’t connect either, you have to often retry. my phone was running smoothly prior to upgrading to Android 7.0 Nougat.

I guess I’m more fortunate than most S6 users. My only problems are missing the flashing Message+ notifications, missing notifications from some apps and a few minor hard to read graphics.

Went to Verizon a couple of days after the update and was told point blank that 7.0 is a train wreck, no way to back it out and no projected fix date from either Samsung or Google.

I have S6 Edge and I hate the new update sooo much!!!

    – Security 0/10 (finger print unlocks phone on what ever)
    – Camera 3/10 (big downgade, pictures are very poor)
    – Batery life 5/10 (significantly worse – does not take me through the whole day anymore – max 8hours)
    – Graphics 3/10 (big downgrade, it’s much harder to navigate through the system)

Btw. If I want to downgrade I will lose my warranty = 10/10

It’s been 20 days since the last comment. Have those issues been solved, either by Samsung or by yourselves? My S6 is showing the notification for updating to Android 7 Nougat, but I’d rather stay safe with Android 6 for the moment.

I never allow updates, but the last update, Marshmallow, somehow got thru automatically and I’ve hated it ever since, bcuz it deleted sooo much stuff off of my phone, including Text Messages I had been saving. I’m still pissed off bcuz I really needed and still need those messages!
Not only did it Delete my Text Messages, it’s made my text messaging Extremely Slow and Lagging and it is sooo Frustrating!
Anyway, this time my phone won’t stop harassing me, always reminding me to do the update. I keep tapping “Remind me later” bcuz there’s no “No Thanks” option.
I’m just thankful for all of these reviews bcuz now I’m never going to update and hopefully my stupid S6 Edge duznt decide to have a Mind of its Own and automatically do the update just like it did with the last Marshmallow Update!
I hate it when Bugs get into my phone and automatically Change my Settings!!!
Plus I think there’s a Bug on this site bcuz since I’ve been typing this, my phone keeps acting up! Arghhh
I’m so fed up with Samsung and all of its Bugs and Issues that I’m considering switching to iPhone or going back to Blackberry!! At least with Blackberry, I didn’t have any Bugs or Issues with my phones!
    Farewell Samsung!!!
You blew it trying to be like everyone else, who are obviously light-years ahead in their Technology, where you will NEVER catch up no matter how many updates you try to come up with!
And you obviously hate that I’m trying to type this bcuz you keep slowing down big-time!!
    Good Riddance!!!

The graphics are horrible so pale they’re nearly impossible to read. The notifications are just too compressed and difficult to read. The keyboard now seems to generate random characters. Battery life has declined and the camera functions have all changed and poorly presented. The whole UI is bland and only suited to people with perfect vision.
