Install iOS 11.4.1 to Fix These Issues

Apple lists bug fixes in the official iOS 11.4.1 change log, but the iOS 11.4.1 update comes with three known bug fixes.

They include a fix for an issue that prevented some users from viewing their last known location of their AirPods in Find my iPhone, improved reliability of syncing mail, contacts, and notes with Exchange accounts, and an unlisted fix.

The unlisted fix is for a bug that caused some devices to crash when the the Taiwan emoji was used or when the word "Taiwan" was entered into a text field in apps like Messages, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

If that bug fix was impacting your day-to-day use, you should think about installing the iOS 11.4.1 update immediately.

If you skipped iOS 11.4, your iOS 11.4.1 update will be loaded up with additional bug fixes including:

  • Fix for an issue where certain character sequences could cause Messages to crash
  • Fix for a Messages issue that could cause some messages to appear out of order
  • Fix for an issue that could prevent logging in or accessing files on Google Drive, Google Docs and Gmail in Safari
  • Fix for an issue that could prevent data syncing in Health
  • Fix for an issue that could prevent users from changing what apps can access Health data
  • Fix for an issue that could cause an app to appear in an incorrect location on the Home screen
  • Fix for an issue where CarPlay audio could become distorted
  • Fix for an issue where selecting music from your iPhone could fail when playing music over Bluetooth or when connected to USB on some vehicles

iOS 11.4 included a fix for the well-publicized "Black Dot of Death" iMessage bug that crashes Apple's Messages app with a specific string of characters.

iOS 11.4 also fixed a 3D Touch issue affecting devices running iOS 11.3 and iOS 11.3.1 where the feature wouldn't work without waiting a few seconds, or longer, immediately after unlocking an iPhone and a fix for an issue where app icons would start hovering out of place.

If you skipped iOS 11.3.1, you'll get an additional set of fixes with iOS 11.4.1.

Apple's iOS 11.3.1 update addressed an issue where touch input was unresponsive on some iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models because they were repaired using "non-genuine" replacement displays.

You'll also get the following fixes from iOS 11.3.1:

Keyboards

  • Fixes a problem that could cause the capitalization of the first letter of some words by the automatic correction feature.
  • Fixes an issue on the iPad Pro that prevented the iPad Smart Keyboard from working after connecting to a captive Wi-Fi hotspot.
  • Fixes a problem that could cause undesirable activation of the digital layout on the Thai keyboard in landscape mode.

Accessibility

  • Corrects a problem with the incorrect description of the Bluetooth status icon and the Bluetooth icon by VoiceOver.
  • Fixes a problem that may prevent the end of call button from appearing in the Phone app when using VoiceOver.
  • Fixes an issue preventing access to an app's built-in ranking with VoiceOver.
  • Fixes a problem that may cause distorted audio playback when using real-time listening.

General Fixes

  • Fixes a problem that may prevent incoming calls from activating the screen.
  • Fixes a problem that may prevent or prevent voicemail playback.
  • Fixes an issue that prevents opening a web link in Messages.
  • Fixes a problem that may prevent users from returning to Mail after previewing an attachment to a message.
  • Fixes a problem that could cause the deleted screen to reappear on the locked screen.
  • Fixes a problem that can cause the time and notifications to disappear on the locked screen.
  • Fixes an issue that prevents parents from using Face ID for approving purchase authorization requests.
  • Fixes a problem that could prevent updating of the current weather conditions in Weather.
  • Fixes a problem that could prevent the synchronization of contacts with a vehicle directory when connected via Bluetooth.
  • Fixes a problem that may prevent an audio app from playing content in a vehicle while it was in the background.

If you skipped earlier versions of iOS 11, your iOS 11.4.1 update will come with a variety of other bug fixes thanks to the versions you skipped.

DO NOT install ios 11! It is a giant step for Apple but a HUGE step back for phone users.
The most annoying thing is that you no longer can check your voicemail directly you have to CALL AND LOG IN TO iToons. (Can you spell ads.)

The whole ios 11 system is a giant money grab by Apple. Much as I resent Google’s android I may have to go back to it.
What we really need is an alternative provider (available in the rest of the world but not here). This is no longer “the land of the free.”

The comment is incoherent. What does the reader’s dislike of some feature of an operating system have to do with the degree of political freedom in the country?

(double tapping the home button to bring down the top portion of the screen so it’s easily accessible with one hand) I thought this handy function was to show what apps. I have open, and to close if I like. At least that’s what it does on my iPhone 5s running iOS 10.3.3. What are you talking about?

You actually MUST wait if you’re out of your country.
I travelled from the US to Ireland and got an update that I wasn’t supposed to get because they do everything by location! Thank goodness it wasn’t bad, but be careful, you can fall into that trap! Maybe because Jony Ive is from the U.K., they get updates first! All I know is I got 10.3.2 before anyone else!!! :)

Siri is so irritating. The translation feature has a funny example–exactly why this kind of translating often gets it wrong. “Where is the bathroom?” is literally translated. The place someone would point out for you would have nothing to do with a toilet. It would be a place to take a bath.

Apple is more concerned about hiding off shore profits than making good products anymore. Sad.

Ever since iOS 11 and it’s later iterations, my iPad Pro 12.9” turned to a useless piece of crap. So useless that I had to return it. They gave me a replacement which is also doesn’t work. It’s ok if you don’t need the touch screen facility (which I do). That aspect of it doesn’t work. The screen spends 50% of the time utterly unresponsive to touch with either my fingers of the Apple Pencil. Basically I have a slate and a stick which cost me €1000 and €100 respectively. I’m really unhappy. If iOS 11.4 doesn’t fix absolutely everything, I don’t even want another replacement. I was an an early adopter of iPad and have them scattered about the house. All of my equipment is Apple (MacBook Pro, iPhones, iPads), but my iPad Pros since iOS 11 are donkeys. Really frustrating.

There is always only one reader at a time. The author should not refer to “some of you” or “most of you” but to “some users” or “most users.” “If your situation is x, then… If it is y, then…” covers the circumstances of different readers without awkward wording.

I don’t care about any of the upgrade features for my iPad. Not worried about security or anything else. When will they force us to upgrade with and “Or else…” connected?? My feeling: IF IT AIN’T BROKE….

In over 30 years of using Macs I’ve never had any “breech” or anything else go wrong from hackers, etc. Too much fear based nonsense about “security” when in reality the alphabet agencies have back doors on most everything :-(

I have been having a terrible time with my iphone7 since the upgrade.
The screen has become so sensitive that the phone now plays music, calls people, hangs up on people, and performs other “unwanted” actions with the slightest accidental touch of the screen. Anyone else having this problem?
