Sure, new shiny hardware rules the roost at MWC most years. But it’s rare that you see new phones with unique operating systems making their way around the show floor. Alcatel’s One Touch Fire is such an exotic animal. Packing Mozilla’s new Firefox OS, the low-end phone with its 3.5 inch screen, 1GHz processor, 3.2 MP rear-facing camera, 256 MB of RAM, and 512MB memory don’t exactly leave you floored, but those looking for a little excitement need only turn the device on and begin using it’s gesture based operating system. Firefox OS should also excite the web user in us all. Mozilla has architected the system to treat widely-used web technologies like HTML 5, and Javascript, as if they’re native to the operating system. In effect, they’re attempting to turn the web into the platform’s software development kit, allowing, in theory, for an easier experience for application developers.
Look for the Alcatel One Touch Fire to ship in mid-2013 to South America, Europe, and Asia. |
